Thanks as always for watching folks and for all the LOVELY comments on last weeks upload regarding my question about upload frequency, etc, it really means a lot. I hope you enjoyed this week's red clay fiasco, this stuff is terribly messy, and apologies for the finger injury nonsense. It's such a pain when things like this occur, but it's healing after the first round of treatment...

Loved the video, my cat came and sat with me to watch and she fell asleep on my lap reaching her paws towards the phone during the trimming stage. Soothing for everyone involved I think.

I've been watching your videos for awhile now and I must say, i really appreciate the videos you've done helping beginners. If I'm going to dedicate time and effort to learning a craft well, i want to learn it correctly the first time so i don't have to later unlearn bad habits. Thanks for helping to make learning this craft more accessible.

It's probably way more difficult to throw clay this way and I hope your finger heals fast enough ! I've been a piano player for 7 years and each time I injured my hand/fingers it's been so hard to play music or practice , finger cuts matter a lot if you're trying to be delicate..

As someone who has spent 18 months on medication with a notorious side effect of skin drying, in a place with low humidity winters, I can suggest a few things to help with the finger paronychia. If the infection does not subside, there may be some foreign matter with in the skin (this was common for me with wood splinters). Might need to work to squeeze some gunk out. Very hot, but still bareable water and soaking your finger for a time (up to an hour) will kill bacteria in the wound. (bacteria are very intolerant to heat). Hope it heals up 🤞🏻

The clay reminded me of a clay I tried out in college that was called Jamaica from the company the college used in the ceramic class. It was a very gritty clay but had a lot of oxide in it so it was a brownish red and the celadon glaze was a beautiful pick to use. We also had another glaze called beer bottle very interesting reactions.

Florian, you should make a video of you doing something outside of your comfort zone, more of a fun(ny) video. Like trying to make a mini Ciro or something 😂. I love all your videos and how you unselfishly share your wealth of knowledge with the world. You should do the doctor double glove method. One finger glove, tape it down enough for flexibility, second finger glove, that way you won’t have to worry about water getting in and loosening the bandaid.

I have a similar none healing wound. My suspicion is that the area is high motion, preventing the wound from closing. If you can afford it, maybe a couple days off will help. Or otherwise trying to keep pressure off that finger tip. Also, I love that improvised cot. I personally hate finger cots cuz they're so tight. That would be much better.

Made myself a few improvised finger covers of that style when working in kitchens with burns or cuts, cuz the grind can't stop. I recently played with translating the shape and flow of the pot into the base, or part of it too. On some tall cups and bowls. Wonder how would you solve that with your more angular shapes

Truly a lovely piece. Intrigued by your new foot trimming Idea. I just murdered a great piece by over trimming the foot. Do you have any tricks other than don’t over trim them?
@floriangadsby
@floriangadsby 10 сағат бұрын
Don't over trim them. Of course I still ruin a few now and then, with time you'll ruin less. Thrown pots become more consistent, as does trimming, and so on. Make sure you're constantly checking thickness, even if that means removing the pot from the wheel and feeling the cross section. Don't trim when the clay is too soft or too hard, both make errors far more likely.

@floriangadsby
@floriangadsby 12 сағат бұрын
I believe that's what it started out as! Then as a potter, it was kept damp for 8 hours straight for a few days throwing, and that developed into something else! I dealt with the pesky ingrown nail but the rumpled skin persisted. I'm going to have to give you guys a finger update at this point.
@schafer6811

It may have started as an ingrown nail, but it looks like it has developed into a paronychia. And keeping the finger wet is a great way to prevent it from healing….

Florian. I will be painfully honest: I am not attracted to your designs. I find them too angular and inert. I do however love your approach to sharing and teaching, and attention to detail. Your techniques and calm voice are a great inspiration. I am deeply inspired to rediscover pottery which I have not done since I took my IGCSEs in the mid-90s. Do not modify your designs based on this feedback, but please keep giving, as I (at least) find your vidoes inspirational.

@floriangadsby I did write "painful". I do hope that the rollercoaster wasn't to emotional. I would sincerely like to support you by buying from you,but the showcased items don't fit my taste. I did notice a couple more "organic" or "bulbous" pieces on a shelf after writing my comment. I meant no offence. Taste IS individual after all...

Looking forward for the glazing. Hope your finger is better now, but if not I recommend Betaisodone. It's an ointment containing iodine ( maybe It's called different in the UK...and it doesnt burn). And put a wound plaster over the injurie at least during sleep. The humidity underneath the plaster helps the skin healing. And Ciro had a little dance with the mop😄
