In movies and video games you sometimes see sword throws, and while it may seem silly at first glance, it's not a new idea. However, the medieval Italian fencing master Fiore dei Liberi in the early 15th century mentions this tactic, although he himself does not seem to favor it.
Fiore's manual:

Joshua Madoc I suspect it is more of a mediveal papertown. The author added one technique to the codex that's just absolute bollocks. If anyone copied his codex he would also copy this nonsensical technique and thus prove that he just plagiarized the codex. Any "master" using the codex without being instructed by the true author would also teach the pommel-throw and prove that he actually doesn't know shit about swordmansship.

DrIvanRadosivic The pommel throw was actually tested on a human head replica (unarmored) and an actual human wearing a helmet, the pommel managed to tear off a bit of skin from the replica and when it was thrown against a human it made a sound so loud when it hit the helmet he couldn't hear anything for a few seconds and he said he would be knocked back a lot if it was a surprise, so it may work

Musashi was an advocate of sword-throwing, particularly the off-hand short sword (wakizashi). The sword throw was his ace-in-the-hole surprise attack. Some historians speculate that Musashi was actually left-handed, so he would have unexpected accuracy, speed, and power in throwing the smaller sword with his left hand. Based on his writings I would be surprised if he did not practice this technique. And why not? With his two-sword style, he could chase the thrown sword and deliver a blow while his opponent was distracted with getting stabbed or deflecting it. Btw, I came across your videos by accident last night and I'm really enjoying your channel! I've always wanted to touch my roots and practice European fencing/swordplay, now the drive is stronger.

Bruce Lee once said to Chuck Norris something along the lines of "It makes as much sense for me to kick you in the head as it does for me to punch you in the foot" on the practicality of kicking people in the head. To which Chuck replied "yeah, but it's nice to have the option" And on that day, Bruce started practicing head kicks.
@lucasfranke3326
@lucasfranke3326 5 жыл бұрын
Well, martial arts are a technology too, they are always evolving. If you look at MMA right now, kicks to the head are more than "just another option", they are often instant KOs. Punching someone's foot looks dumb, but if you are training that kind of motion you might as well just try grappling instead, it works. Everything is constantly changing and evolving, even fighting techniques

You're still more encumbered than the unarmored person. I've worn 30-50 lbs of gear and no matter the orientation slowing of movement is inevitable. The real question is whether a fully armored, unarmed man would have a chance against an unarmored man with a sword, I'd personally take the armor over the sword any day.

Devils Advocate If it works, it'd be because they'd be laughing so hard. Practical side of things: (as practical as this truly stupid technique can be) as Matt Easton explained, you'd need a special sword with a trick pommel that unscrews really easily and a handle and guard that stay on regardless.

Noah Weisbrod that's what I was thinking! Perhaps, historically, the enemy just died of laughter! CrysResan Polearms, spears, bows, lances, large swords/axes, basically anything that was impractical to sheathe was the ancient equivalent of the modern rifle. Swords, daggers and to a lesser extent smaller maces, axes and similar weapons were the sidearms of the day. Of course this wasn't always the case, such as with the Roman legionnaire, who used a gladius or spatha (depending on period) as their main arm. However, the vast majority of the time, it was true that "sheathed" weapons were secondary to some sort of missile, long pole or hafted weapon.

I'm really glad I found this video, I'm actually writing a novel right now where my main character regularly utilizes sword throwing. He carries multiple swords at all times because of this, but the main reason for the tactic is because this is a fantasy story with supernatural powers, and one of the main character's abilities allows him to substitute himself out for one of his swords, switching his position spontaneously at a moment's notice, which is the real benefit he aims to gain when he throws them, rather than dealing damage to his opponent. Also, I could be wrong about this, I probably am, but I would kind of expect that the full spinning throw demonstrated at 6:58 might work a little better if your were using a sword with a curved blade, like a Scimitar.

Amazing video. It definitely seems like a viable tactic, though granted, it seems to be a rare circumstance that would be appropriate to use it in. Love that you have all the testing on video here. I would think the longsword is a somewhat ideal weapon to do this with, especially with the blade being so pointy, it's almost spear-like in nature. We must never forget how to unscrew the pommel, and end our foes rightly.

Janas Aurora I think he stresses dueling discussion too much compared to real warfare. I don't think Skallagrim understands real combat much. Majority of ppl (today and history) didn't fight mostly in "duels". They fought in teams. And even today, war emphasis is not shooting a person shooting at you while you each try to duck behind cover. It's distraction, cover fire, and outflanking an opponent and shooting him from the side as a TEAM! That being said, "throwing a extra/looted battlefield sword" seems like a very handy skill to have. I'm sure ppl throw rocks too, but a swords is better.
@TemenosL
@TemenosL 9 жыл бұрын
rasmasyean I wouldn't be so sure of that, to be honest. I'm sure Skall, more than most, understands the difference of battlefield mechanics versus very small-scale dueling mechanics and such. Dueling however, tends to be the very popular focus of HEMA, as well as all the longsword stuff, so it may very well be that he's used to speaking pertaining to that scenario more than mass combat.
