Where can I go to learn to do this stuff? I’ve never worked on cars but have wanted to since I was young… I‘ve watched videos for years, geeking over E30s and 28’s, Volvo redblocks, 4Runners, Land Cruisers… with a full time job, tackling anything like this seems impossible, but it’s always been a dream of mine to work on cars, know them inside and out, and make them special. Is it possible to buy a vehicle, buy the tools, and dive in with nothing but KZbin videos? Is that a recipe for disaster or adventure?

It's harder today because even crappy cars are expensive. I started off with a Nissan Stanza that I traded computer parts for. It didn't run and I basically learned how to get it running by messing up repeatedly and then sold it for $500 after all of my BS fixes. Then I bought a Nissan 240SX for a project car and learned everything I could from that. Scrolled on forumboards going through build threads until like 4AM for a year and then started trying it myself. I have some really old videos going over that lol

Jump in, try something cheap and basic for a vehicle slowly build your tool chest you have time. Do not go cheap on torque wrench, floor jack or stands - ever. Use a wheel chock too. You tube, internet and buy factory repair manuals, read like it’s prep for a test because it is. Forums and questions be the newbie we all have been. Like what you experienced? Take a few courses, welding etc. you can do it!

This is a great watch. Ive got decisions to make at the moment as my 80 series looks like it needs a head gasket, but I could go for a full refresh instead.

Removing and rebuilding was the best choice, anything else would be false economy, mileage is irrelevant, however age is detrimental to seals and gaskets due to the number of heat cycles. You made the right decision, and nice work by the way.

Hi Ricky! What timing. Your channel and this particular video showed up on my feed two days ago and I’m glad it did. Just had my 1988 Fj62 diagnosed with a bad rod on the number 4 cylinder today. After watching your video I’ve half way convinced myself I can do this. Maybe even install a H55 5 speed! Need to locate parts. If you have any leads you can drop my way that would be awesome. Thanks again for making these videos.

Nice video and great work on the rebuild. Did you bore it out or just clean up the cylinder walls? If you did bore it, did you notice any power differences?

Just keep taking care of it as long as you can. Head gasket will go eventually but could be thousands of miles from now! Could’ve even already been done!

Never seen one this clean inside they changed the oil on interval. How does it run since the refresh. Did you notice increased power.
@RM_Garage
@RM_Garage 8 ай бұрын
I'm not sure if it has increased power or not because I didn't drive it much with the old engine. I would imagine it's slightly more peppy, but probably not by much.

I've been building my 94 pretty much along side yours, making similar upgrades. Any reason you kept the Pair Reed valve instead of relocating the O2 sensors?

That's a lot of work .But for toyota master tech for over 30 years, I do see a major mistake made you use the old rod bolts and cilinder head That is a problem waiting for a you drive that truck for less said 10,000 miles, pull the valve cover, and you are going to find loose bolts on the heads they are a 1 time use Do not reuse, and so are the rod bolts they snap under high rpm and loads
@RM_Garage
