The official name is Jyg’s Up, Earthbound. Yes that is how Jyg is spelt in this context. Some background information: last Colo gave me the realization that outside of maybe Chaos Cookie there is no beating the Astronocat community when it comes to memes and Music, only tying them at most. So that’s how I got the idea of instead of going against the grain to go with it. Was listening to the Rock Candy albums from Starman not long after Colo ‘23 ended, and the last track in the fifth album is “I am Earthbound”…by Stephen Georg. And so the plan was set. I would try to get I am Earthbound played at the next Colo for the Makes Music segment. (Aside: I spent the entire past year trying to subconsciously plant the idea of I am Earthbound in Jerod’s community by making that my exclusive song suggestions for his drum streams. Believe it or not and despite never getting played, it worked to an extent, though only those in the Astronocats Discord seemed to notice). Cut to the day the schedule for this year’s Colo dropped, I went into the Astronocats server and suggested that we make sure that we are unanimous on what Stephen song we wanted to push for, all of us trying to go three for three. I offered I am Earthbound as a suggestion on the grounds that it being kind of barebones for instrumentals makes it a perfect blank canvas for the musicians to work over plus Earthbound has its 30th anniversary in Japan this year in August. Some of the members liked that idea but there was another song that others proposed called “Chaz is the Best” that they were pushing. So we put it to a poll between those two songs that was set to end at Nap Time. Either way was no hard feelings, least from my side (Earthbound’s 30th anniversary overseas is next year), but I am Earthbound initially tied with Chaz is the Best before falling behind for most of the week. And then Grandpa arrived during Bingo, and everything changed. After showing up, Stephen dropped in the Discord that he personally wanted I am Earthbound to be this year’s pick and that he would do the vocals himself being there. Nobody was going to pass up that opportunity, and so I am Earthbound won the poll (Chaz is the Best will have its day in a later Colo). Then it was just a matter of seeing who the top contender was during the initial countdown and either tie or beat them at the last second which thanks to Fosx the former happened and no one sniped in the last forty seconds though I was prepared for that just in case there was a repeat of last year’s Colo (mainly thinking of Chaos Cookie between myself for Hi-Fi Rush beating Random Choice and then ZanRising for Rising Zan beating Pizza Tower but I think last year’s Make Music might’ve also been a close nail biter). It really was a happy coincidence that Jig’s Up, Penny! and I am Earthbound were in the same keys since none of us knew what the Benefactor had planned and had no way of contacting the individual(s) behind the push, though I did wish I let the group know about Gig’s On, Penny! much earlier since the second verse section turned out kinda…cluttered and overpowered the vocals for that bit, but hey, that’s how it goes with this segment in the past few years, and for something cobbled together in an hour and a half, this is still very amazing. Absolutely love the updated lyrics from Stephen.
