About that: I actually wrote a program that can encode and decode messages written in a similar fashion! However, what I did was essentially write each letter as a 3x3 pixel grid before coloring the columns red, green, and blue. Then I overlap them, so the second letter's left column (red) overlaps the first letter's middle column (green) and so on. I suppose the equivalent for subpixels would be "take this column, then the one 4 to the right, then the one 4 to the right of that".

That anti-aliasing thing for fonts is a nightmare when you're using a non-RGB monitor, like BGR panels (same thing but the blue and red are on opposite sides). Operating systems allow you to change this, but many programs decide to use their own settings, which was the case for all Chrome-based browsers until recently, and the result is that texts look awful.

I could be wrong, but I believe this was used a lot in very old games to make more round shapes. For instance, I'm pretty sure Sonic 1 uses sub-pixelling on the edges of his silhouette to make him look more round, based on the sub-pixel configuration that was commonly used at the time that game was released. There are complex crt filters for certain emulators that actually showcase this to give the most authentic feel for this game. All in all, developers at the time that understood how pixels were rendered actually used sub-pixelling to their advantage to make pixel art look more detailed.

Sonic 1 came out when CRT tvs were standard. And the phosphor dots on colour CRTs are not aligned to the scanlines of the tv nor the pixels of the image the console is sending. So you can't do any sub pixel shenanigans on a CRT.

Oh my godd you're so smart. I've been thinking since Killer Queen came out with a bespoke cabinet back in 2013, It would be great to have a redo on the Virtua Boy screen that only had single color pixels so you could display a high resolution for really cheap. Instead I could have just put filter paper on my screen. I'll have to get back to you, but I at least have to render a Mandelbrot doing this. News for you though, I do have some exceptions to the rgb scheme. I think most projectors nowadays use Digital Light Processing, where they use a mirror for on and offness, and a spinning colorwheel to create rgb, so instead of sub-pixel art you could remove the wheel and triple the framerate... but they're already well beyond processor limits at 20kHz. Much more recently, E-Ink screens have color for consumer release and they can be all over with this idea. I 'think' they have capacitors that move colored inks up and down, and each has rg or b in them, which then act as staggered 'sub pixels' to make their size less apparent, but the capsules themselves can be anywhich where. Dasung says they have colored ink particles, while Boox just have the rgb filter over the the right capacitor-sub-pixel areas. Then, I only discovered watching JerryRigEverything's Boox video, some phones have almost the same triangle pixels! I guess to make their DPI look better when you've got your eyes right up to your phone screen.

Very nice! I've never done it practically. Though I did wind up using this in Excel since I'd made a screen display split into red, green, and blue slider cells and I had it set up where each cell would have to recalculate values unless I made them calculate different values based on location, so of course I chose different values. However, with a 256*256 cell resolution it was not so good, particularly since each cell is I believe 2*2 pixels, if the screen is too small, the viewer will have to squint just to see it! To make things neat and divisible I also had a brightness slider to make the color components a nice power of two. The brightness slider doesn't recalculate but instead just looks at the above three red, green, and blue components and calculates brightness. The fact that each cell does calculations with formulas is the biggest problem though, sneaking all the math into conditional formatting tends to work best.

This video was so cool, and the production value was absolutely insane!

I remember a lot of talk of talking advantage of sub-pixels in pixel art forums (Pixelation and Pixeljoint) but not in this way.

I've always taken note of the disposition of color in these types of screens, mainly if I stare close into my DSi and PC, but I've never thought to utilize such a thing to my advantage...

Really cool video. I saw someone make a portrait with oil or acrylic paint where each pixel was a 3*3 grid. It worked surprisingly well from a distance.

That sounds cool. It kinda reminds me of pixel art made with physical dice. The different numbers equate to different shades.

There was this one homebrew text rendering system on the GBA that used sub-pixels to get really dense output. Fun.

I used to have a sub pixel text image I put at the bottom of forum signatures (yes, my back hurts). The program I used wasn’t too hard to read on a CRT in the 2000s at 1024x768 resolution (which was practically the high definition standard with 800x600 being the vintage one). There used to be pixel limit to images so it was really cool to be able to cheat with a sub pixel font. It never worked right on LCDs after about 2010 though

Very cool video! I thought of something similar when I was looking at my calculator screen. The pixels were really big and when something changed color it would shift a little spacially. Sometimes when I look at changing blocks of color on my laptop I can see the tiny tiny shift too.

then we get the SUB-SUB-pixel art.

I've seen a font like this! I don't remember what it's called, though. I've had ideas about using subpixels, but haven't gotten around to it yet. Cool to see someone make a video about it!

something similar to this was done a while back to make the world's smallest font on a computer using subpixels. There's an image floating around of the first 8 chapters or so of Lord of the Rings written in that font, and with a magnifying glass you can actually read it.

I have seen this technique used before back in 2017. I was at the Hackaday Superconference, and there was someone there demonstrating their insanely tiny functioning replica of a Mac Classic. It must have been no more than 2" tall. Since the classic had a black and white display, they were able to create the native 512x342 black and white 1-bit resolution of the Mac using a modern color display with sub-pixels. It benefitted from the heavy use of dithering due to the lack of greyscale, and given how tiny it was, your eyes tended to blur the colors together to look like white. Sadly, I've looked for half an hour and can't find this specific replica anywhere online.

I can't wait to see ARGs start using subpixel messages in their puzzles. I don't think I've seen that done yet.
