Nowadays, this would get panned for being “too dark,” “too serious,” or “silly.” There’s no earnestness in movies anymore. Probably because we’ve lost that desire to get swept away in the movies because the Internet and these dumb phones we carry around have made the fantastical very boring now. It used to be a treat to go to the movies. Now it’s just like your living room. So sad

This is what most films have forgotten. The power of saying nothing. Sometimes you can make a scene very powerful simply by not having a single word of dialog. Spoken words would only break the tension.

I don't care what anyone says. This is one of the greatest scenes in movie history. Everything comes together in utter perfection, and not ONE WORD is spoken. The facial expressions, the cinematography (look at that black smoke billowing behind Darth), the slow motion and THE MUSIC. Good Lord, that music. Goosebumps every time, and it's been at least a million by now. I know it could never equal the original, but King Conan must be made. With the right people. And Milius' original script.

Agreed. There will only ever be one Thulsa Doom and this movie was perfect but I want to see more of this awesome world. I have bought a replica of this sword too and every time I look at it I think of this scene. 10/10 and as you say, proof that sometimes a scene is better without dialogue. The outfits were also amazing. Doom's battle Armour is just awe-inspiring!

Thank god this movie is now getting the respect it deserves. After its inital release, it was banished as just "Arnie's first real movie" and then later "just another dumb 80s flick". Once severely underrated, now Milius' genius story about what is quite simply humanity's brutal past; deeply entrenched in barbarism, sorcery and conquest , can be seen as a visionary piece of cinema. I always get hung up on how these set of events took place in order for someone to capture that. Was it intended when they originally filmed it? Because nobody is moving in slow motion, that happens post production. Did the director intend for it to happen? Like did they get that specific shot with the intention of slowing it down and focusing on the eyes. So many aspects to account for that makes amazing things happen when you have the final edit.

The actress who plays Conans mom has living in Spain for a long time, since she was 20 (she was 30 when making Conan) and is know by the name of "Nadiuska" here, young Conan is also spanish actor, Jorge Sanz and the entire movie was filmed in Spain. Nadiuska born in Germany, her mother was from Poland and her father from Russia, and living in Spain for the most part as i said. Her story is very tragic. She was diagnosed with schizophrenia in latest 90, she broke after recovering from the mental illness and she could never recover economically so she wandered around Madrid for a while, homeless. Also very impaired physically. I dont know how is doing today but its sad.

It might honestly be James Earl Jones's best acting performance, in this movie he conveys so much even without speaking. And the casting is perfect. Someone charismatic as him with a soothing voice and a gentle face like him makes him a very believable cult leader. Yet he's able to hint at that darker side too, just in his facial expressions. I also love how in the final confrontation with Conan, you can notice just a slight tinge of fear, clear awareness that he WILL die if he fails to talk Conan out of it, but his confidence growing again when his words seem to have effect. It's such a shame this is pretty much his only live action villain role. Yes, he's great as Darth Vader's voice, and he's known for his wonderful voice but it should not overshadow his amazing physical acting capabilities. It's rare to see an actor be able to convey so much without words. On top of that, James Earl Jones is just an amazing lovable guy in real life, one of the rare actors who is universally loved.

JEJ was brilliant in his research for this role, he claimed to have based his performance as Thulsa Doom on the American cult leader Jim Jones (who 'hypnotised' hundreds with his charm and charisma before finally killing his congregation and himself). The stare here looks wise, merciful and benevolent, like a great king, and yet he is as cold as a snake underneath. This softly-spoken monster is one of the most underrated villains in cinema history.

Man, this scene NEVER gets old. This movie was ahead of its time. If anyone is a Skyrim fan, the music from this scene reminds me of Jeremy Soule's "Standing Stones" from the game. It's worth listening to. Every time I hear it it makes me think of this specific scene.

Speaking of Skyrim, there's a Conan soundtrack mod for it. The Kitchen Orgy music plays in the Skyrim taverns for example. You know, the scene & music right BEFORE Conan and his crew crash the party and kill that snake.

I wonder, was Thulsa-Doom literally luring her under his spell, or was it the kind of charisma and personal magnetism that one finds in cult leaders that caused her to lower her sword as he gazed into her eyes, perhaps causing her to think that he meant her no harm.

@@Xenaisthebusiness I think she waited long enough for the attack, she started to expect their lives would be spared. The pumping adrenalin which would have given her an edge with her own swing was decreasing as they were waiting too. The time for her to attack would have been during that first surge of fight or flight. After waiting that long her swing would have been weak and feeble, especially being confused as to what he was waiting for. You need conviction in your swing in order for it to hit it's mark deftly.

I watched the commentary so I know Thulsa was indeed hypnotising Conan's mum. But I do like the fact that people have so many different interpretations of the events. Since there is no dialogue, every time I rewatch the scene, keeping a new interpretation in mind, it's as if I was watching a completely new tragedy unfold. "He deceived her by making her think that he's letting her go" "She realised there is no escape" "He was merciful" "He malignantly toyed with her" I am madly in love with this movie :>.

I think you're right. But I always wondered WHY? Why behead her, not sell her as a slave. Rewatching this, I realize he's still into the idea of steel and the sword as power. He recognizes the masterwork in Conan's father's sword, and basically just wants to test it out... You see after he beheads her he barely even looks at the corpse, just gazes at the sword for a while.
@OldmansCC
@OldmansCC 8 жыл бұрын
I think he's more fascinated with the act of wielding power through steel rather than the sword itself. He does kind of confirms it in the later scene where he makes the girl jump. After the headchop he's not looking directly at the sword, but you're right, he's not looking at the corpse either. It's like he's focusing on the flavour, tasting the power to end someone's life. But I don't think he's doing it maliciously. At best he believes it's right, at worst he just doesn't care one way or the other.

Man...a scene like this is almost too highbrow for the source material. Goes to show what can result when people actually care about the movie they make. So much emotion packed into a single scene without any dialogue at all. The scene builds Thulsa to be almost sympathetic to the woman's plight, but climaxes with an act of sheer brutality. Says so much about the character while at the same time saying nothing at all. And only James Earl Jones could still look completely badass and menacing with that haircut.
