I don't care what anyone says. This is one of the greatest scenes in movie history. Everything comes together in utter perfection, and not ONE WORD is spoken. The facial expressions, the cinematography (look at that black smoke billowing behind Darth), the slow motion and THE MUSIC. Good Lord, that music. Goosebumps every time, and it's been at least a million by now. I know it could never equal the original, but King Conan must be made. With the right people. And Milius' original script.

I always get hung up on how these set of events took place in order for someone to capture that. Was it intended when they originally filmed it? Because nobody is moving in slow motion, that happens post production. Did the director intend for it to happen? It might honestly be James Earl Jones's best acting performance, in this movie he conveys so much even without speaking. And the casting is perfect. Someone charismatic as him with a soothing voice and a gentle face like him makes him a very believable cult leader. Yet he's able to hint at that darker side too, just in his facial expressions. I also love how in the final confrontation with Conan, you can notice just a slight tinge of fear, clear awareness that he WILL die if he fails to talk Conan out of it, but his confidence growing again when his words seem to have effect. It's such a shame this is pretty much his only live action villain role. Yes, he's great as Darth Vader's voice, and he's known for his wonderful voice but it should not overshadow his amazing physical acting capabilities. It's rare to see an actor be able to convey so much without words. On top of that, James Earl Jones is just an amazing lovable guy in real life, one of the rare actors who is universally loved.

I think you're right. But I always wondered WHY? Why behead her, not sell her as a slave. Rewatching this, I realize he's still into the idea of steel and the sword as power. He recognizes the masterwork in Conan's father's sword, and basically just wants to test it out... You see after he beheads her he barely even looks at the corpse, just gazes at the sword for a while.
@OldmansCC8 жыл бұрын
I think he's more fascinated with the act of wielding power through steel rather than the sword itself. He does kind of confirms it in the later scene where he makes the girl jump. After the headchop he's not looking directly at the sword, but you're right, he's not looking at the corpse either. It's like he's focusing on the flavour, tasting the power to end someone's life. But I don't think he's doing it maliciously. At best he believes it's right, at worst he just doesn't care one way or the other.

My personal view is that as long as Doom was watching Conans beautiful mother he was incapable of beheading her. When he turn his sight elsewhere he found the strength to do it

What most people don't realize is James Earl Jones isn't wearing a wig in this movie. That's his REAL hair.

This scene always make me sad, it's so sad. Poor little boy, he was just a kid, and seeing his mother getting killed, he was in total shock, afraid and confused. Poor Conan, not just his mother, not just his father, but the entire village, HIS PEOPLE! It was total genocide.

Three minutes long, not a word spoken, the music, the facial expressions back and forth among everyone in the scene tell the whole story up until the actual strike. This is how great films are made.

Man...a scene like this is almost too highbrow for the source material. Goes to show what can result when people actually care about the movie they make. So much emotion packed into a single scene without any dialogue at all. The scene builds Thulsa to be almost sympathetic to the woman's plight, but climaxes with an act of sheer brutality. Says so much about the character while at the same time saying nothing at all. And only James Earl Jones could still look completely badass and menacing with that haircut.

I never saw sympathy. I saw cold evil putting her in a trance. Taking away her will. Then ruthlessly slaying her in front of her son. All to show his powers.

Coming here once more, after the news of James Earl Jones's passing. One of the best scenes ever, with not a single word spoken. The irony, that we can't hear his iconic voice. R.i.p... Thulsa Doom....

The way JEJ acts in the scene right before he lips off Conan's mom's head lulls you into a false sense that maybe, just maybe, he was going to let them go. And when her guard was down, he ruthlessly eliminated her.
