What I love about BDG's voice is how one second he sounds like the endearing shy contestant at a talent show one moment and then an R&B god the next. It showcases his talent + how natural it is for him to sing the way he does. Like... it always sounds like the first take and I love it. True confidence and charisma. My boy.

LYRICS [Chorus] Keep it quick, say it brief If it's fast, it will be a relief Short on time- that's a gift Count your seconds, and they'll catch the drift [Verse 1] Disparate parts, desperate hearts Pulled through a sieve Hand me a chart, so I know how to start to say "This is all I can give" To summarize seems incomplete How novel is a novel, that can fit on one sheet It seems that I'm destined to fail To compress myself to the size of a thumbnail [Chorus] Keep it quick, say it brief If it's fast, it will be a relief Short on time- that's a gift Count your seconds, and they'll catch the drift [Post-Chorus] Na na na, na na They'll catch the drift Na na na, na na They'll catch the drift Na na na, na na They'll catch the drift Na na na, na na They'll catch the - [Verse 2] Don't like what's revealed here When your depth of field's near, it's hard to come close Chip stones from the boulder Suddenly, my vulnerability shows Ooh! You can crop and trim, 'till all that's left Is the essence of a presence that is feeling bereft Of a guard in just the gist of a tale That is less of an image, and more of a thumbnail [Chorus] Keep it quick, say it brief If it's fast, it will be a relief Short on time- that's a gift Count your seconds, and they'll catch the drift [Post-Chorus] Na na na, na na They'll catch the drift Na na na, na na They'll catch the drift Na na na, na na They'll catch the drift Na na na, na na They'll catch the drift

Your music always has a bit of a jazzy feel to it, what scales and/or chords do you usually use?
@Gr4pefru1t
@Gr4pefru1t 6 жыл бұрын
it's the prevalent use of extended 7th chords and secondary dominants that gives it harmonic association with the jazz genre. He's singing mainly in Aeolian/Ionian (the relative modes of Amin and Cmaj respectively), which is common for most "pop/popular" songs. These two modes are treated as the basis for teaching/learning music, as they feel the most "stable" harmonically

My interpretation of what this song feels like: The singer feels like he needs to tell an amazing person something complex and intricate that he feels, but he hasn't the ability nor the time to do handle things well enough for him to be satisfied that he did a good enough job. A time limit forces him to do a substandard job, but it's over with and out there, which is why it's a blessing that seems so paradoxical. Anyway, after finally revealing himself, he feels inadequate in comparison to the person he feels for. Small parts of his personality may be admirable, but the whole picture of him is much worse than any random point. He struggles knowing that he loves someone amazing who has no reason love him back. He loves, but thinks himself undeserving of love. That is why he a quick rejection is a relief: he already knows the reasons so they need not be said out loud.

This is a song, in my opinion, about how the KZbin "algorithm" limits creativity, overwhelms creators and forces creators into making shorter, less in-depth, videos if they want to "do well". The title is a play on how KZbin recquires set dimensions and has a maximum file size for thumbnails. Most full images need to be compressed and cropped to fit these standards - mirroring how creators have to treat their content. The theme of brevity is also continued in how short the song is. (chorus) "Keep it quick, say it brief If it's fast, it will be a relief" The algorithm coerces creators into making shorter videos, that cling to the audience's attention (disguising this as a benefit as it, in theory, should reduce workload) "Short on time, that's a gift" If creators are working to a deadline, this forces them to create shorter, less challenging content, which creates better viewer retention. "Count your seconds, and they'll catch the drift" Creators count video seconds to ensure the video is the "most profitable" length. Having to cut down on content per video will inevitably leave things unsaid, relying on the audience to fill in the gaps. (verse) "Disparate parts, desperate hearts Pulled through a sieve" The algorithm acts as a "sieve". People are "desperate" to have their content do well (for monetary gain or simply to reach viewers) and have the percieved dream job of content creator, regardless of their "disparate" subject matter. "Hand me a chart, so I know how to start to say "This is all I can give"" This line is referring to KZbin analytics, which presents a souless view of the platform. Even if someone is overwhelmed already, KZbin's analytics will still provide feedback. Alternatively, the line "This is all I can give" could be from the audience's perspective - referring to viewer retention. (This is unlikely imo) "To summarize seems incomplete How novel is a novel that can fit on one sheet It seems that I'm destined to fail" Most artists want to create "novel" content. This comes into conflict with needing to produce short, digestible content regularly. "To compress myself to the size of a thumbnail" KZbin recquires set dimensions and has a maximum file size for thumbnails. Most full images need to be compressed and cropped to fit these standards - mirroring how creators have to treat their content - leaving things out and removing detail. Since social media is the only interaction BDG and Zong's audiences have with them, this compression impacts how they are viewed by a massive amount of people. If you are what you are percieved as, a snippet of a marketable persona is the only version of a large KZbinr most of their audience will ever know. (post-chorus) "Na na na, na na, they'll catch the drift Na na na, na na, they'll catch the drift Na na na, na na, they'll catch the drift" This is likely just a product of song writing, but creators find themselves having to repeat content (eg. serieses way longer than the creator intended to make) to gain long "session starts" and favour the algorithm. "Na na na, na na, they'll catch the" The songwriter cuts themselves off here, continuing the songs theme of brevity (verse) "Don't like what's revealed here" I'm not entirely sure here- but this could be the songwriter(s) admitting this goes against the presented "dream job" of KZbinr. "When your depth of field's near, it's hard to come close" Depth of field is another image pun (keeping with the extended metaphor of image compression). "Chip stones from the boulder Suddenly, my vulnerability shows" While the songwriter(s)' online persona(s) are a small part of who they are as people, the nature of their online content leaves them feeling vunerable. "Oh, you can crop and trim, 'till all that's left Is the essence of a presence that is feeling bereft Avant-garde, just the gist of a tale That is less of an image, and more of a thumbnail" :( absolute banger

I heard this song before I knew who BDG was, mostly just browsing Louie's other work after I first saw him. Back then I thought it was just pretty good, but learning about who this Bureaucratic Wunderkind is substantially changed that. I'm glad for many things from this perfect goblin man, and fully appreciating this song is now one of them. Sincerely, A Fellow Jorts Enthusiast

I can't pin down why, but this song means a lot to me. I don't cry often, not much at all really, but I'll tear up to this song and not in sadness or even joy, just a kind of nuetral, calming cry. Like stretching after sitting still for a long time, needed and refreshing.

I've listened to this song so many times... And I'm just now registering the fact that Brian David Gilbert is singing this... I knew this song before I knew him, but I've listened since then! I was just randomly listening to it, and went to check out the singers other music, and was like "where do I know this name?? Wait- No, that can't be the person I'm thinking..." And it just started sounding more and more like him... In conclusion, I love Brian David Gilbert even more than I did; This is literally one of my favorite songs! (Also, I'm on a Louie Zong marathon atm, I also love you and your music very much!
