i seem to think that the mood doesn't have to come from the set piece or how it is arranged, but from what the figures, or vehicles or various elements within it are doing. How the things within the set piece are interacting. In the past i have been able to just start drawing a final piece with no planning and been able to get balanced pieces. but i do want to start doing thumbnails because for some more specific things that i want, that would be the only easy way to get there.

I completely agree with your perspective! The mood truly comes from how the elements interact, not just their arrangement. It’s that sense of movement and connection that makes a piece feel alive. Starting without planning is great for spontaneous balance, but thumbnails can definitely help when you're aiming for something more precise. They’re a fantastic tool for figuring out those specific ideas before diving into the final piece. I think you’ll find that it makes the process smoother for those detailed moments you want to capture!
