I lived in Thunder Bay 40 years ago. Port Arthur looked the same back then. Looks like they cleaned it up a bit, though. If you headed the other way at the start, you would have passed Crown St. We lived about a 5 minute walk to Hillcrest Park. Thanks for the video.

The city is now a far cry from what it was in the 70s-80s. It is generally in a dismal state of economic and social devolution.

It's a long winter ... I think it will be a big adjustment for you. Summer is nice but still very cool compared to what you will be used to. On the other hand, it is very sunny here compared to Toronto. The sun goes down at like 10:30 PM in early summer. Lake Superior is the second-biggest lake in the world, because your Caspian Sea is technically a lake. However, Lake Superior is not salty like the Caspian Sea and the water is extremely cold all year. Thunder Bay is mainly composed of 2 separate cities that were legally joined together back in 1970, so it is very spread out over a large area. It is a bit frustrating to get around this place without a driver's licence, there is not a lot of public space where people congregate. I think most Iranians would probably be shocked or disappointed by the lack of public space or public culture in many Canadian towns and cities. Even in Toronto there is not a lot of public space where people can just chill freely without having to pay for anything, and people are quite cold and distant with strangers. I am here as a seasonal outdoor worker and there are not a lot of people who walk around, except in the parks/trails which are generally nice. If you take the bus up to Centennial Park and Cascades Conservation Area, you will have a great time and you can see waterfalls. Best way to meet people and appreciate this place is probably to join the Thunder Bay hiking club or other outdoor activity club, I have seen them going around Centennial Park in a group including some newcomers. If you like outdoor activities, or can get an outdoor job or a job related to the local resource industries, your experience of this place will be way more positive. Sorry if this is somewhat rude to say: I hope you study something relevant to the local industries, or a skill in-demand in Canada, and not one of those "business" degrees ... I think your experience adjusting to Canada and trying to make a life here will be 1000x more positive if you pursue an in-demand skill. I just know there are 1000s of people trying to make a life here by enrolling in small colleges for a "business" degree and a lot of them are stuck working low-skill minimum wage jobs, spending many years like that hoping to get Canadian PR. Maybe talk to your college registrar's office about it if that is your situation, ask them if you can transfer into a program relevant to local industry. Your experience will be way better if you get a job that allows you to see the most beautiful parts of this area and make connections with local people. If you are stuck with no driver's licence doing a generic job in a local shop alongside other foreign students, you will probably be unhappy here and want to go somewhere else. There is a shop close by the airport called HDL Global that sells a small assortment of Iranian groceries, mostly ready made meals and pickles.

They use salt on the sidewalks there? When I lived in Toledo they preferred to use ash because it was so cold the salt didn't work as well. In St Louis we use salt. I was just home this last holiday season. Osaka never gets that cold. But this Christmas in St Louis it got down to -27*C with an Alberta-Clipper blizzard. Looks like no ice fishing yet!

It looked like it, some provinces use different products to prevent rust as much as they can but in my area in Quebec, I've seen sand and beet juice which help melt the ice just as much. I often miss Japan, we will definitely come again for a visit one day.
@jays20352 жыл бұрын
