It's great to see how much some people care about helping Mother Nature out. Keep up the great work!

I think that the thunder box is a great idea! I also know what you mean about not wanting an area to become more popular, i think we all have a place like that.

The colleges all do this in surrounding hiking areas. I think it is a great idea as long as who ever puts them im plans on maintaining them too.

I will keep an eye on these two until I can't hike or paddle anymore. We will see how long they last before needing repair or replacement.

It’s a hard topic, but it’s reality everyone has to poop!! Hiking the AT you see bomb sites all the time and it’s frustrating. I give you kudos for taking the time and money to make the bomb box!!
@EconoChallenge2 жыл бұрын
Love the term bomb sites. Very descriptive without being crude. I laughed.

This is a hard situation but think you did the best thing for the knuckle heads that poop on top of the ground without burying it. Of course if everyone followed the leave no trace principle and I think this includes poop, you wouldn't have to be putting in thunder boxes. Good on you for doing it. :) :) I remember years ago going to a camping spot and the first thing I usually do is clean up after those who have left a mess. Was picking up trash and came to a cookie sheet with a pot turned upside down on top of it. I picked up the pot because I was going to move the pot and sheet away from where it was, guess what was under the pot! Yup, the biggest human poop I have ever seen in my life! Who would do that? I am guessing they thought is was going to be a funny thing to do for the next camping visitor but I can tell ya, funny was not what I thought, especially at the time. I probably do look back on it now and laugh when I tell the story but it sure was not funny then. Thanks for sharing your project! :) :)
@EconoChallenge2 жыл бұрын
I agree with you. That is not something that anyone should find funny. Sometimes I think I might learn something by talking to people who think this is a good idea. Then I think I will probably just be disappointed. If you want to drive you have to get a license if you want to hunt you have to have a license if you want to fish you have to have a license. I say if you want to camp on crown Land you should have to pass some kind of test to qualify for an outdoors card. That way everyone still has access but not everyone is allowed to go completely uneducated. That's just my thought.

Thanks for sharing the link to the plans. The 'technical' drawings have all this really blurry red text. Did you just ignore that and build from the description?

Up. It was a bit of a leap of faith but it works. The issue I had was the template for the hole is not a print-and-use kind of thing. I had to make my own to get the right size of hole.

Did you post a 'Privy' sign so others will know it's there? One of the best purchases I've made in the past is a cordless bit driver. It's great freedom for both screws and drilling....
@EconoChallenge2 жыл бұрын
I did get one comment that I need to update my drill from this antique. Maybe it is time take another look at cordless tools. I must admit I would not miss having to carry a battery, inverter and drill to get the job done in these remote places.

It may attract more use to the area but they are coming anyway so this should keep the area a little bit cleaner. You are a good man Jeep but I knew already cause you are Canadian. Nate

I WAS eating lunch while watching this video LOL.... Here in the states we use 100 feet from water as a rule of thumb. Of couse I doubt that all the animals follow that rule. I doubt Sasquatch does. I don't think that adding a privy is going to make the place more popular. The place is making itself more popular and most people are just PIGS. You should see all the crap I have to clean out of my favorite fishing site each year.
@EconoChallenge2 жыл бұрын
I am glad people like you and I are out there cleaning up these places. The campsite in this video is seeing more and more garbage being left behind every year. It would be a dump site if all the trash was still there from the past 3 years alone.

Good karma will come to you and yours Jeep! I did see one thunder box in Wisconsin where porcupines had chewed on it, and a couple of years later when I passed by there again someone had tacked chickenwire around the outside. Those porcupines love to chew on stuff! When I was born in 1953 the global population was around and 2.5 billion people, and now we are around 8 billion people and I am feeling it! Trying to find silence is getting very hard as logging has opened up the country. I wish there was better education on how to "leave no trace" when in the woods, public service announcements like Smokey Bear and putting out fires might be helpful. Whatever the case Jeep hats off to you my friend, all we can do is try. I have educated my Granddaughter on how to "police the campsite" before leaving since she was 2 years old, she turns 17 in December, and have done that all my life. As always, thank you for the wonderful video!
@EconoChallenge2 жыл бұрын
Hey Ossie. Policing the campsite is a great lesson. It also helps make sure you don't leave behind gear. That one last search has saved me from losing a few essential items over the years. I feel all the people more and more on the drive to and from the trail head. The roads get very busy on the weekends these days. Thanks for dropping in for a visit.
