Here is a rundown of Day 1 at the Thunder Ranch Night Vision Course...
Going with the crawl, walk, run method, we work initially through some lecture. Going over proper setup of gear, followed by zeroing methods. Then after zeroing our visible / IR lasers, moving into some shooting and learning offset.
As we transitioned into darkness, it was time for some mobility exercises. Be it walking under NODs or some other fun challenges. And more work with our carbines and lasers as well as some shooting passive through optics.

I appreciate Jack asking why people are training night vision. Just like you would ask what a rifle setup is intended to do, it's smart to take a step back and describe your goals. No judgement against people who are doing it because it's fun or cool and don't expect to ever have to use it in a real world setting, 'cause I would be if I could afford to!

It’s refreshing to see somebody use a rifle that’s not as short as possible. I understand where sbr’s are useful, but people forget the benefits of a longer rifle. I love a good 18” ar.

@@wywax_ longer barrel will give you more velocity, yes. But accuracy? nah, accuracy has nothing to do with barrel length. My 11" bren 2 will outshoot any of my longer barrel ARs.

Try lugging an 18 inch AR around with a suppressor for a two day class. Besides, all that extra weight just for a few hundred ft per second gain is pointless for CQB/ home defense.

Depends on the mission but its too long for most uses people will find them selves in. A 14.5 is better or even classic 16 inch

The movement in the woods in and around obstacles gets me hard . This is invaluable knowledge for night warriors. Lol it's always funny running nods during night ops while raiding houses 0200 only to bust you face from a sewage ditch by the houses. Only the real know.

I love Clint's brutal honesty and straightforwardness. Yes, NVGs and suppressors are cool, but if you ever have to use them in defensive situation it's gonna be a shit show when you have to stand in front of jury. But then again, we do live in uncertain times.

Ya that’s why I only own a 12 gauge double barrel and shoot two blasts if someone is trying to break in. Just the sound of racking it will scare them off! The 12 gauge is huge and has MASSIVE stopping power.

Just a consideration for anyone attending this course or wanting to replicate the training at home: do NOT have your nods on in the daylight without caps. Even if they are turned off they can still be damaged because of the overwhelming amount of photons produced by the sun. There have been many documented cases of this, most famously in nevada where an entire class had their nods burned out after having them flipped up and turned off in the broad daylight. Not worth the risk when were dealing with equipment that commonly costs in excess of 10k

I love Clint Smith but that's totally outdated boomer wisdom from the 1980s. "If you ever shoot someone with a modified trigger, you're in for a world of trouble from the liberal DAs!" No. You're not. The only reason your equipment would become an issue is if you're on shaky justifiability grounds in the first place or you're extremely unlucky and live in NYC or something. Sure there are freak cases but home defense happens with AR-15s and other scary militaristic guns ALL THE TIME and contrary to Massad Ayoob columns from 1990s American Rifleman, the policing and legal trends have actually gone significantly in the favor of legitimate self defense over the past 20 years. You can find frequent news stories to this effect that don't involve the homeowner being investigated because of the gun they use. (much respect to Ayoob too but just saying it's a dated perspective). Yes, there's Rittenhouse which is a bullshit prosecution but there's a ton of other factors which are influencing the prosecution way more than the gun he used.

Surefire XVL2. Probably one of the most compact and effective devices on the line. Not a MAWL as far as performance. But I saw first hand how awesome it can be out to a few hundred yards.

​@Erozpl01 01 Its the best "class 3" option for us civilians. Yes it has its negatives namely weight and sending to russia for warranty (id argue good luck getting a class 3 laser repaired if you aren't an LEO/military/know someone in the industry). When you shoot out past 100m or have a flashlight shining back at you you want more photons to cut through that opposing light source. Edited. Bottom line is this a guy can get into the NVG game with a PVS14 and a Perst 3or 4 for about $3500-4500 and have some pretty solid gear and be effective in the night.
