Bond and Emilio Largo (Adolfo Celi) battle for control of the Disco Volante in THUNDERBALL (1965). Largo’s boat was designed by Sir Ken Adam from an old hydrofoil and catamaran and took four months to build. Adam said: “It had to be 160ft long and it had to travel at 50 knots and no such yacht existed at that time. It was very experimental as the two hulls had to work independently.”

I would really like a remake of this that deviates less from the books. I get why they did it in the 60s but today you could show Specter as the interesting Kabal it is instead of making one person interesting and the rest basically faceless henchmen that are for no given reason willing to die for your cause even though you just abandoned them. Also could actually go with the larger underwater battle as a final showdown instead of a simple brawl on a ship.

By their shocked reactions, it appears that the Disco Volante’s deck crew at the aft cocoon section probably didn’t have a clue of anything about the ship’s separation feature and were deliberately ditched and left behind powerless to fend for themselves, while the top villain, Emilio Largo and his command crew make a clean getaway in the hydrofoil. That’s backstabbing the expendables at its best! At least Domino got her sweet revenge! 💋.

Don't you just love how Bond is somehow able to hold onto the fin of the Disco Volante's hydrofoil despite the tremendous rush of the water against him?! The force of the water rushing against him would have knocked him off the hydrofoil's fin (unless of course he possessed the strength of King Kong)!

Someone in the production said the series as a whole was b to move in a Bond as "superman" direction. Someone else described it as an "adult comic strip". When you think about it Bond is the last knight. He would have the strength of 10. This REALLY came out in Lazenby's excellent Bond which seemed to have unlimited 💪 Remember how he military pressed that goon over his head and tossed him into the others in the pretitle fight on the Tracy sur mer Beach in the South of France? We knew we were in for a more athletic Bond. No more epicureanism. Even Tracy's rented Cougar "muscle car" said it all.

Fun fact: "Thunderball," the novel, was actually based on a screenplay Flemming conceived with two other writer. When the screenplay went nowhere, Flemming turned it into a book which later became the movie. The two other writers sued for credit and won partial rights to Bond and "Specter." This began a years-long legal battle to stop a second, parallel Bond movie, which eventually was made as "Never Say Never Again," which used the same basic storyline as "Thunderball." (Remember too that the rights to "Casino Royale" had also been sold and appeared first as a television show with Barry Nelson as Bond, and later as a spoof with Woody Allen and David Niven.) The whole situation was finally resolved when Eon Productions obtained all rights to Bond, which is how we got a legit "Casino Royale" as well as "Spectre."

May 21, 2023----I remember this movie as we were living in leasure City while we were stationed at Homestead AFB, Florida and I was in elementary school delivering the Miami Herald. There was a newspaper contest, with me and some other boys getting to see this movie for free with our newspaper distributor as our chaperone. Didn't happen as Mom/Dad wanted to go out so I volunteered to babysit my 2 brothers and 2 sisters so they could go.

Look up William Fairbairn and his book "Shooting to Live", Bond and other characters don't use their sights because the top firearms instructors of that they believed that it was better to align your gun with the center of your torso whilst facing and staring at your opponent because it was thought that using sights in an instant at close quarters took too long.
