Your bias damages your brain. Lockheed Martin purchased the Yak-141 design from Yakovlev in 2012, in order to build the F-35. The F-35 is nothing more than a Yak-141, built with the latest materials...e.g. carbon fiber, digital dash. Imagine that, the USA copying other countries, LOL.

V tails are not just to "look cool", they do have slightly better performance, the downside to them is if you lose one you will have serious flight control issues, both need to be working 100% for it to fly right, if you lose one, then both pitch and yaw will no longer respond as you'd expect, vs if you lose a pure rudder on a twin rudder plane, or one of the elevators, your plane is still going to be flyable, not so with a V tail.

Talking about the "Hoover" effect of the F-16's. I went back to Ramstein AB, after getting out of the Marine Corps in 1989, to spend one last summer living in Germany. When dad was assigned there as the First Sergeant of the 86th AGS they were in the process of switching from the F-4 to the F-16 and everybody was moaning and groaning about how detailed they had to be on their F.O.D. walks for the F-16's in comparison to the F-4's. Anyways when I came back I worked as a civilian for the 86th CES doing landscape maintenence for the entire base. I remember we would have to schedule when we could mow the area's adjacent to the taxi ways because of the F-16's being able to "suck" in the cut grass if it was still fresh on the surface of the grass underneath. We had to cut it twice, as we were on twin 48" bladed driving mowers and the USAF was not about to spend the money on mulching mowers that big...

The F-14 was notorious for compressor stalls when first released. I’m not sure if that was an intake issue or not. Maybe larger intakes would’ve helped but the Pratt & Whitney TF-30’s they were first introduced with apparently didn’t like sudden thrust changes or severe AOA’s that a fighter pilot often needs to execute. The P&W’s were changed out to GE F-110’s on the F-14A+ model that quickly became known as the F-14B. These seem to handle the abrupt needs of a fighter jock more betters! 🤪👍

It was a TF30 issue going through the growing pains of the first fighter turbofan motor development. Fighters were exclusively propelled by turbojets prior to that in the 3rd Gen designs. F-14 intake geometry and airflow mass was designed for the TF30 and F401-PW-400, which was an F100 variant with longer AB augmentor sections specific to the F-14's nacelles, with a larger fan section that had an additional stage to the front end as well, higher bypass ratio than the TF30 or F100. They were only supposed to build 16 F-14As with TF30s just to keep the line open from 1970-1972, then mass-produce the original F-14B/F401 as the fleet standard air vehicle/propulsion combo. USN dumped hundreds of millions of 1970s dollars into the F401, but it was mysteriously abandoned. They later took the original F-14B/F401 testbed (Red & White Tomcat with racing stripe-like paint job) and tested a GE F101 variant in it for the Derivative Fighter Engine program (DFE), as well as in one of the early F-16s. Thus was the impetus for the Improved Performance Engine program in the 1980s that gave us the F100-PW-220/229 & F110-GE-100/129/400 motors for the Viper, Tomcat, and F-15.

Couple of things... The ruddervators are a RCS thing according to the SU engineers, you are quite right about the traditional arrangement being more manoeuvrable. SU countered by extensively testing a heavily modified Mig 21 by adding a ruddervators and a thrust vectoring jet nozzle, the results where highly impressive with the test aircraft easily out rating a late mig 29 and holding its own against the felons ability to get the nose around...! The original air intake was close to the the under chin arrangement of the eurofighter typhoon or f16 but during testing was found to cause stalled airflow into the engine during high alpha moves, thus they came up with this shape after also trying the circle/diamond shapes. The current intake is rumoured to make the most of air spilled from around the fuselage during high angle of attack flight... And lastly, the engineering, flight control systems and construction methods used in the f35 can be directly traced back to the Yak 141 soviet navel fighter program, however Lockheed didn’t steal them, they purchased them fair and square from YAK back in the late 90 if I remember correctly 👍

This plane is a private endeavor intended for export. Russian military aviation standards require two engines, so this one won't see service in Russia, but is intended for markets where western jets aren't sold, which is pretty much everywhere outside of NATO. The first prototypes are slated to be built this year (2024). Russia does prototype aircraft cautiously, they build a few, wring them out for a year or so, noting changes along the way. This philosophy was born of the lessons learned from the days of the USSR when once a design was approved they just built it in numbers, as making changes required jumping through insurmountable bureaucratic loopholes. USSR was thick with bureaucracy. The design is intended to be easily maintained and repairable with off the shelf components, sort of the AK of fighter jets. The airframe is mostly titanium, with some aluminum and a composite skin. Rumors abound that the skin will have radar absorbing elements built into it. Russia has a virtually unlimited sanction proof supply of titanium, so most of their airframe designs capitalize on this fact. Its doubtful that this airplane will have the capability to control accompanying fighter drone "wingman" pilotless drones as does the Su-57, which allows standoff engagement of enemy planes and ground targets. The drones themselve are very impressive, said to be able to withstand sustained g loads that would crush a human pilot. There is a lot of ignorance in this comment section regarding Russia's capabilities, which is dangerous imo. Rest assured, the folks whose job it is to know are not swayed by western propaganda. Remember what Sun Tsu said about knowing your enemy.

I would agree, it would seem like they would have a horrible pitch authority and without that you're not going to turn a very tight circle in a dogfight.. The YF-23 didn't have that issue because the whole tail units twisted, and they were huge compared to the ones on the checkmate which really look more rudder-like and less elevator like. My biggest problem with the Checkmate is that they literally listed every "wish list" item from 5th and 6th gen planes and said "Yup! This will do that", and then claimed it would cost 1/3 as much as an F-35. How do you know a Russian is lieing? He opens his mouth. There's NO WAY they are going to pack all that tech into that plane and have it be that inexpensive. In short, this is nothing more than a Potempkin Villiage wooden mock up to scare the west. Everyone is fully aware that the "ruddervator" is not the most aerodynamically efficient layout. It's about reducing radar returns. You're a fighter pilot. You "should" know this. It's a trade off. Ether do you value more? Aerodynamic maneuverability or low observability.

Hi couple of my thoughts. The Su75 does have a small intake but like the Rafale which has much smaller intakes in contrast to f16s or eurofighter. Maybe it's designed to operate a little lower altitude where the air is thicker like the rafale. Just saying that's a possibility. Also regarding the v tail maybe given Russian fighters like thrust Vector engineers combining that with v-tail it could work. Also we are moving away from dog fighting so focus is on stealth. First look first kill.

Having just a "V Tail" is not a bad thing. The YF-23 had a V Tail and it was an incredible aircraft. Northrop's YF-23 offered greater range and superior stealth, but the YF-22 had a slight advantage in maneuverability.

Personally,I think V-tails are pretty good,best example is the YF-23: It was only slightly less,if not on par with the original YF-22,and one pilot who flew both planes says such V-tails mitigated initial advantages to thrust vectoring in the YF-22. When it comes to the intake, yeah, that's always subject to change between protos/mockups and the final design. I've seen conjectural F-32 designs where the X-32's intake is brought futher forward so the front of the aircraft looks more like a boxy Sabre. One wonders why the Russians haven't made annular intakes for modern planes? Or China for that matter. Their MIG-21 derivatives first had more forward and smaller intakes, and nowadays have side intakes.

That's a non-issue when you have a computer driven flight control system that interprets the pilot's input from incredibly small stick movements. Early F-16's didn't even have a stick that could move since the maneuver inputs were entirely calculated from the force applied to the stick rather than stick movement.

Nice feedback/impression. Had never thought of the stick being in the way of instrumentation when centered, thank you. This is also one of the main reasons they are trying to figure it out with a single engine.

The description title of the video is misleading. The description reads: "Thunderbird Fighter Pilot...." There is no such thing as Thunderbird Fighter. There is an F-16 Fighting Falcon multi-role fighting aircraft in the US Air Force, the Israeli Air Force and the Saudi Arabian air force (to name a few). A Thunderbird is a slightly modified F-16 that is not fighting capable but air show demonstration capable. Meaning, it has been modified to maximize maneuverability and speed while flying low for spectator amazement. The F-16 Thunderbird has never fought in combat and has never been a fighter jet. The video should be re-titled: F-15 Eagle air-superiority fighter jet pilot reacts to SU-75 Checkmate! That is impressive resume to say the least. The F-15 is the GREATEST fighter jet ever produced with an unbeatable combat record! And one even landed safely without one of its wings once! Amazing aircraft!

That Chintake is absolutely big enough….if that airplane is meant to never go beyond high subsonic. As a direct competitor with any modern fighter though? Nope. Also - Ruddervators DO work exceptionally well IF they are large enough. The YF-23 was nearly as maneuverable as the YF-22 (that sported vectored thrust) because it’s ruddervators were nearly as large as the entire wing surface of an F-5.
@kenwhitfield219
@kenwhitfield219 Жыл бұрын
My thoughts. First aircraft design, especially for stealth aircraft, is designed to be as maneuverable as possible while still complying with stealth requirements. The tradeoffs made, as with any engineering design, are the result of compromises taken in the comprehensive, overall design solution. The X-32 had a movable inlet specifically intended to address the high angle of attack airflow problem. It seems to me that a movable inlet, although not obvious in these preliminary design photos, will very likely be required. Jettisoning weapons to bring back the stealthiness of the aircraft would be a very expensive and wasteful idea. Just as the F-35 does, I would suggest that when maximum stealth is not required, and when a larger number of attack aircraft can be assigned to a mission, then it would make sense to maximize weapon loads by carrying external weapons. As is done with the F-35. Second, there is a clear pessimism about Russia’s ability to pay to fully develop and produce this aircraft given the history of the not stealthy enough Su-57. The Checkmate could turn out to be nothing more than a means of scaring the West. And, if it becomes anything like the Su-57, then it will not represent much of a threat to western aircraft.

The number 1 Stealth aircraft is F117. The whole airframe is built around the "stealth" philosophy and avoid radar detection. The bottom of the airframe is almost perfectly flat, the airvent angles and the mesh is designed to reduce the RCS from a frontal radar scanner. F117 was shotdown in Serbia in 1999 by a soviet old SAM system, so STEALTH is a great philosophy but is it worth it. The rumours that F22 or F35 is more stealthy that F177 is just for kids, if you have any idea about aircraft design, you will look at the frames of those jets and you will be able to tell that the f22 and f35 did not prioritise STEALTH when designing this airframe, unlike f117.

The Chinese are notorious for being copycats. Given the size of the air intake on the SU - 75 the Chinese are just asking for Compressor problems along with other problems. Plus given the fact that the Yuan, China's Currency, isn't worth the paper it is printed on, I doubt if the SU - 75 ever gets to the production phase in its current form.
