Here’s my guess. Howard Stark owned the land in Manhattan where Stark/Avengers tower sits, and in the sub basement, Shield was working to recreate the Super Soldier serum. Robert Reynolds was experimented on in the 50’s or 60’s and the experiment was a success, but there were noticeable side effects so Shield was able to contain him in a cryostasis chamber like Hydra did with Bucky. The area was sealed off and covered up, and Bob was left down there. When Howard was killed, he was the last person to know about the secret of Project Sentry, but Val finds out about it and buys the tower to do her own bit of research into the whole thing. Tony never knew about any of this, because Howard wanted to spare the world of any potential danger the Sentry could bring, so he deep sixed the whole thing. Val wants to use the Sentry as a weapon to keep any adversaries in line, but doesn’t know about the Void, and the Thunderbolts have to work together to bring Bob back from the edge, and destroy the Void somehow. Anyway, that’s my take on how this story could go. Obviously it’s just a spitball idea.

The Sentry is a mutant. It was the super serum that augmented his abilities. It has been HEAVILY implied that the Void is actually the “Shadow King”. His costume is in the original X-men’s costumes. A hint of his ties to them and being a mutant.
