the clip is a bit misleading, they show the notes for Herbie's synth bass line when thundercat is talking about Jackson's bass riff. in the original recording of the song you can hear the bass part come in right after the synth and it better highlights what Thundercats saying here

Yep, I kept listening for that second bassline happening between the synth bassline and I’m like, “uh… I think I hear the bass, but it’s not in between the synth bass notes and it’s not really a bass line, it’s almost a muted guitar picking thing higher up in the scale.” Oh well, I guess I’m not the intended audience for this clip. 🤷

That chameleon (mini moog) bass line was popular because it was the 1st of it's kind. If you're interested in great bass playing in Hancock's band then listen to "Spider VSOP" if you'd like to hear Hancock's Head Hunter's at their most complex then listen to Actual Proof from Thrust. Or the many fusion covers like Tribal Tech

I think the word he should’ve used was *_oscillate_* . “Vacillate” has negative connotations and indicates indecisiveness, wavering values and instability; whereas “oscillate” indicates a more decisive, precise and deliberate, repetitious travel or movement to and fro between two points (normally at a similar tempo, rate or frequency).

He's used the wrong word! 'Vacillate' is to be indecisive over (typically) two positions. There's nothing indecisive about Paul Jackson's playing! The right words would be 'to alternate'.

Percussion? Paul’s playing a rhythm guitar part on the bass, right? I would never have thought of that as a percussion part. I guess we all hear things differently.
@mario4everd
@mario4everd 2 жыл бұрын
He said "like a percussive role" or "like a percussionist", not like it is an outright percussionist part. Which is what the role of a good rhythm guitar should feel, feeding into the groove of the track.

@Ablaire

@@jmclen7 It is described as being percussive, yeah, Bass isn’t percussion but when you play ghost notes, it typically isn’t for melodic purposes but mainly for rhythm. It’s similar to percussion is all, it’s a unique sound so there isn’t something as similar to it, kind of like the difference between congas and cowbell. It’s subtle but it’s definitely there.
