Another excellent review, Dan! I'm sorry that your figure has those issues! That's a bummer. Mine came out just fine. Clean paint and the right hand holds the sword tightly. As far as the future of the Thundercats toy line, I think I read somewhere that Brian Flyn of Super7 mentioned on Facebook that there will be a gap between the first and second waves of figures, but that the line will continue.

Thanks Dan for the interview. I wish I had known about this in May so that I could preorder. Unfortunately these days MOTU figures are rare and always finish once announced. I’m not sure why they don’t make more of them. It’s ridiculous to find their prices for $199 on eBay when they were only 39.00 to begin with. I’d like to buy the new super7 filmation figures. All of them.

The paint job on mine is great, the right hand is nice and tight on mine. The only negative was the claw shield attached to his waist popped off when I took him out of the package. I think he looks better without it there so not a problem for me. Thanks Pixel Dan.

Another great review! I agree about the peg system for the Claw Shield. It should have been the other way. I think the other hand is for the "sight beyond sight" pose. That sucks about the paint slop on the belt :( A hair dryer should help out with the sword holding arm. Looks AMAZING next to He-Man. LOVE the sculpt and proportions on this better than the Bandai version BUT the Bandai version had much cleaner paint apps and I like how Bandai attached the Claw Shield to the belt more. Those ankle rocker joints are very well done. Too bad the Filmation style toys did not have those.

Just got mine, it's not as bad as Dan's, but it's not perfect either. This is why this Matty Collector thing just wasn't working. The figures just aren't more love than their regular releases. You're paying for nicer packaging and that's that. Talking to Super-7 at NYCC, I feel more confident we'll nicer nicer products.

Mine has the red smear on the belt logo too. I heated his hand and held it closed and now it holds the sword a bit tighter.

the only drawback is the Claw Shield is not correct. The claw does not have fur on it, it's a glossy texture. Or like a metal that is also reflective. But that is my only issue with it.

My Lion-O also had a loose hand. I noticed it was warped in the package and warmed it up with a hairdryer and it closed up a lot. still loose but not precariously so.

I have a feeling if Super7 gets Thundercats sorted out they'll improve this guy, and re-release him. The MOTU stuff is already looking pretty darn awesome, and way better than what Matty Collector was doing. The amount of accessories is incredible! Hopefully that'll carry over to Thundercats when Super7 inevitably relaunches it.

I tried to send you this on Facebook a week ago but you didn't check your inbox yet, so... here it is: - Some people complain about Lion-O's hands but we can use a hairdryer for the right hand ✋ then put it in icey water (and maybe some superglue to give it some solidity), it will fix it. As for the second rubbery left hand ✋ it is to hold the sword of omens over the right hand ✋ when he asks for sight beyond sight. I will probably do something about that stupid peg on his waist as well.

The sword holding hand isn't an issue whatsoever. All you have to do is dunk the hand in very hot water, squeeze the hand so it's a tighter grip while holding it in cold water. That's all you need to do to reshape the plastic.

My figure had a belt buckle issue as well. Mine was worse. The symbol on the belt was covered in a black blob of paint. Horrible quality control. I returned it and waiting for a replacement. Hopefully this wont be an issue with the future figures.

Paint was a little sloppy on one boot with mine but other then that it was pretty good. As usual individual results will vary with paint. The right hand should hold the sword tight so hit it with a hair dryer. I think they screwed up with the extra gripping left hand which there is no need for. That peg sticking out of the waist was a poor decision as well. I agree with you, should have been the other way around.

Lion-O is really becoming synonymous with Masters of the Universe, just saw a Christmas ornament set of He-man and Lion-O at a Hallmark, the "arcade" fighting game of MotU I saw on KZbin has a lot of characters to pick from including Lion-O!

I got lucky and mine has no paint issues and no loose right hand. I do totally agree about the sculpted claw shield sword of omens combo...very annoying as is the peg sticking out. That being said I am praying to the toy gods that super 7 continues the line and I'm excited to get the next figure in the subscription. Great review Dan!

XXTROB bandai's claw shield was better IMO, I have both, I get the chance to find a bandai Lion-O with perfect eyes, which was the major problem those figures had crazy misplaced eyes, and I would say, I prefer my Bandai Lion-O to the Mattel one which arrived with a sloppy FACE paint job...

FREDDHAZARD I have the bandai lion-o also and I really liked that figure, but my bandai was really loose and wobbly and the logo on his belt was upside down. I prefer the sculpt and color scheme and sword on the Mattel version. The claw shield on the bandai was functionally better but sculpt and paint wise Mattel is superior. I just got lucky cause my mattel lion-o has no issues

mattel had the opportunity to make a perfect one, my favorite is the Mezco one. my bandai claw shield is perfectly painted, I think Bandai's claw shield is more accurate since the claw in the cartoon looks metallic and is not hairy, MummRa could see his reflection on it, but mattel got the best knuckles. about hiding the dagger, bandai also did better, but man thank God you had no issues

What is up with Quality control and these figures??? My belt is the same. The paint is all over the place and even down on my Figures leg. I'm a little tires of Mattel's quality control recently. I've had a lot of bad luck. Great review

Hopefully we'll get an accessory pack released either by Mattel or Super7 that fixes the problems w/the gripping hand & clawshield. I believe we were supposed to get another right hand w/a better grip, but somehow instead got another left hand, which makes no sense. Mattel REALLY dropped the ball...again.

I had the same exact problems with mine. Except my paint slop was on his eyes and tunic. I tried the hot water trick twice on his hand and it didn't take. The hand is still super open and loose. Man I was so stoked to get this guy and he is a huge letdown. :\

Luckily my paint job was pretty good. The only issues I had was that a little gray spot is on the right boot and the red in the middle of the belt is not full doesn't fill the circle all the way. You can't really notice it unless you look at it closely. The hand that holds the sword on mine is pretty tight still a little looser than I wanted to be though. I don't know who to blame for these shortcomings Mattel or The 4 Horseman. I'm really surprised that since it's not as mass produced as most retail lines of figures that they would give to the subscribers such bad paint jobs.

Heat up the hand with a hairdryer and then adjust the hand... run cold water over it and the right hand grips fine...we shouldn't have to do that, but it works

I hear Jackal Man is going up for sale on Matty collector the 15th of this month. I called them but they wouldn't tell me what time it will go up for sale. Does anyone know what time Jackal Man will be on their site? In the past I believe figures would be available at 10 or 11am eastern time. I really want to get the remaining 3 figures at retail cost. So I know they'll only be a minute or two until they sell out on their site. lol - just need to know what time they go up.

I guess I Lucked out, The Lion-O I got from my Favorite Comic book shop Didn't have any of the Problems Addressed in this review, or at least not as bad as I've been hearing. there was only a little dot of red paint on the belt, but it was easily scraped off with no other paint coming off, and the Right hand on mine holds the Sword of omens just fine, and everything else checks out beautifully on mine. I guess I'm Just Lucky. X3

The claw shield should not have fur. In the cartoon, there's at least one episode where Mumm-Ra sees himself in the reflection of the claw shield.

I have way more confidence in Matty Collector than I do Playmates. I'm sure that we'll get a re-issue Lion-O in the near future that fixes all the booboos made with this figure. If not, then they can chew the bark off my big fat log.

They REALLY need to stop posing the figure in the package! The right hand would have been fine if they hadn't posed him with it in the package, stretching it out (the rubbery plastic just worked to make it even worse). The left hand holds stuff just fine! The right would have been molded the same if they hadn't stretched it out. And speaking of packaging: The second left hand is probably supposed to be an open "clawing" hand, but once again, it was shoved into the packaging, and the rubbery plastic made it warp closed, making it pretty much the same as the other closed left hand. Confusing choices all around. ...and even after all that, it's still a fantastic figure! Just have to heat the hand up and mold that sucker closed.

Oliver - I feel the opposite. I like the 80’s LJN version, but this one blows it away overall. I am disappointed with the claw shield for both versions though, but I love how they included the sword when it is small and the attachable claw when not in fighting mode. I am EXTREMEMLY disappointed that there will be no one Thundercat figures coming from Matty Collector as they have done a great job overall.

I guess I like the clunky vintage charm of the ljn figures. This one is still a beautiful representation of the character and it is sad that the line could not continue, I also had high hopes for the line.

Oliver - Yeah, it is disappointing. I was hoping for the Berserkers and Lunatic figures. One thing I do not understand is why didn’t Matty Collector include Snarf with Lion-O like the 80’s LJN figures. Either way, this mess is so disappointing. And, even more disappointing is that every time the Thundercats tries to make a revival; Cartoon, figures, comics, etc., it fails epically. It’s like it’s a curse. He-Man seems to do well in all mediums, but not Thundercats...strange. The audience is big enough, I assume, so what is the problem?

***** I recall Dan making a video about that a while ago, his default form I believe. As a kid I had a toy of his Ever Living form, I also have a great statue of it too. So I am waiting to see what that will look like. One thing that would work in Super7's favour is that the Thundercats line isn't as big as MotU. Although it does have several big vehicles and playsets which are essential, such as Mumm-Ra's Tomb, Cat's Lair etc

Got to disagree about the packaging. The art is the same stuff that's been on everything Thundercats in recent years. Would have been nice to see something new. Also, I don't know why you would choose a red backdrop for a figure with red hair, something to make him stand out more would have been appropriate. The bio is crap and very badly written too. The figure does look nice though, still waiting for mine.

I really got disappointed when I got mine. First I hated the fact that the head is all painted, should've been sculpted in flesh-tone pigmented plastic instead of a blue, the hair should've been a separate piece glued like they did with He-Man. My figure's face paint is as messy as your belt (which is worse than having a messy belt) for a figure we don't get the chance to choose, and the whole collecting bullshit, they needed to have a better quality control, MOTUC never disappointed me, and the hand... Jesus, the hand, I guess is a marketing idea, like the first He-Man with reverse shoulders, I hope they fix all these shit in a second release..
