"Something in the Air" was a number one hit for The Who's Pete Townshend's other band Thunderclap Newman in 1969. Townshend created the band to showcase songs written by former The Who chauffeur, also a drummer/singer/guitarist/songwriter, John "Speedy" Keen.

LYRICS:
Call out the instigators
Because there's something in the air
We've got to get together sooner or later
Because the revolution's here, and you know it's right
And you know that it's right
We have got to get it together
We have got to get it together now
Lock up the streets and houses
Because there's something in the air
We've got to get together sooner or later
Because the revolution's here, and you know it's right
And you know that it's right
We have got to get it together
We have got to get it together now
Hand out the arms and ammo
We're going to blast our way through here
We've got to get together sooner or later
Because the revolution's here, and you know it's right
And you know that it's right
We have got to get it together
We have got to get it together
Now

I am listening to this song today, 30 March 2021, exactly 5 years after Andy"Thunderclap" Newman died. He was a lovely person with an amazing memory. I coaxed him out of retirement in 2005 and for 5 years played with him in the Thunderclap Newman Band. To have performed Something In The Air with him on stage was a real privilege. RIP Andy!

He was a truly lovely man. I don't know how it happened, but when I was in my early teens he was round my house to see my parents. We had Shepherds Pie and we talked at length about how great cats are.

1968 -69 was the time I graduated from high school, had my first long term lover, tried college, participated in peace protests and ultimately prepared to be drafted in 1970. This song takes me back there to the time we believed that we could change the world. We did, but unfortunately it did not stand the test of time. Peace and freedom requires work and vigilance. War and oppression require much less energy and people got lazy. I find it ironic that this song is now relevant again but for the opposite reason, instead of fighting for gain more freedom we are on the verge of having to once again fight to get it back.

Starts in E major, has three key changes. The second verse climbs to F-sharp major, goes down to C major for Newman's piano solo. The last verse is, like the second, a tone above the previous verse, closing the song in A-flat major (or G-sharp)

music such as this will NEVER come again and NEVER be made again.. it was OF its time and FOR its time... and for the generation that loved and appreciated such music .. of which i was a member of that generation.. and remember the first time in heard this classic song.. i was 17.. in Montabello Park in St.Catharines Canada with some friends .. floating on a cloud that LSD formed for me... and heard this come from the radio.. there COULD be words to describe the effect the song ( and the hallucinogen ) had on me...but to this day, i CAN'T find the words... and ONLY recall the moment.. etched in my mind for all time..THATS how deeply i appreciated this song which was and still REMAINS a work of art :)

I wish I'd been around for those times. I was only a toddler at the time, but I've always wished that something similar would happen again. Who cares if the revolution was ultimately defeated & everyone was put back to sleep? It must have felt damn good to be part of a common cause & out and about sharing it in so many different ways. I caught the very end of the LSD/magic mushroom era because my friends had parents who'd been a part of it all. Mushrooms were still legal in the UK, and we listened to Hendrix & all of the sixties bands, etc. It wasn't anything like actually being there, but we could still feel it even in our little groups in the late 70s & early 80s. I'm almost 60 now, but would certainly join in if it were to happen again. That would be so much better than what's going on currently (which is very little of any note). But I agree that it will probably never come again. Look what happened when they tried to repeat Woodstock so many years ago! I'm too old to care about people laughing at hippies & LSD, etc. I think it's fantastic just to read of that era, listen to the music, and watch all of the documentaries about it. It was a hell of a lot more collectively enjoyable & meaningful than what's (not) going on currently.

Personal taste, of course, but I thought the song was a piece of pop perfection, APART from the piano solo, which for me breaks the song into a fragmented piece. I think that solo might have been great on another song, like a Jelly Roll Morton type song, but for me it simply interrupts this otherwise great song.

Back when I possessed so much hope for the future--my athletic career was beginning and, there was nothing I thought I couldn't do. Imitating Joe Namath and loving the Jets, my big sis getting her first car ['70 Maverick] and, my Dad getting remarried. This song inspired me in my youth and I take delight in listening to it in 2022...super 70's magical tune.

Yes! High school football and roundball and soccer, the soundtrack of our teenaged lives lots of commotion and devotion: our beloved NY Jets were great then! I still am a fan, although it's been hard to be one, you will know this! This year will be their year!

From the glowing guitars at the start through the "frostbite with boxing gloves" piano solo, this epic song captured the imagination of the British public. It spent eight weeks in the Top 20 from June to August 1969: 17, 7, 1, 1, 1, 3, 5, 12.

I always liked this song. It had such a peaceful sound. I use to think it was about a love revolution. I never listened closely to the lyrics, especially the last verse. I didn't know it as about a violent revolution as implied in the last verse. As John Lennon sang in the Beatles' song, Revolution "But when you talk about destruction Don't you know that you can count me out".
