NEVER stop on a hot racetrack if you can avoid it. The poster made 2 huge mistakes here. #1 target fixating and running off the track. That's a mental skill error. #2 staying in the crash zone instead of moving on. That's just bad decision making.
@cchief249

@@tartredarrow I hear ya man and appreciate your perspective. I decided to go off track with him, if it wasn’t someone I knew I would have entered track. It does look like target fixating though! Staying in crash zone maybe wasn’t the best idea I’ll admit that, however I did see the red flag fly fairly quickly which for this org everyone stops where they are. Some mistakes for sure, I was too consumed making sure my buddy was alright, and all the instructors and medical crew thanked me for staying with him.

@@cchief249 Wow! I knew slicks lacked traction when not warm but I didn't know it was that bad (I'm mid B group at best so I've never even considered slicks). I was also under the impression that tires cool off really quick (like a minute or two). What happens if you go out to the hot pits and they don't let you on track right away because the previous group had a yellow flag or something? Is the cooling off that happens in a couple minutes just not enough to be a problem?
@cchief249
@cchief249 6 ай бұрын
@@SomeDudeOnline yeah cold slicks are doable but you really have to be careful with them, 2-3 laps to get heat in them before you start riding normally. I won't go out unless they've been on warmers. Granted, this guy had DOT Q4s on but they're an aggressive, almost slick road tire. Up to temp slicks do not cool off that rapidly. You'll lose some heat but nothing to be alarmed about. A yellow flag or a few minutes stationary is fine. Great questions, ride safe!

I've seen a lot of cold tire and highside crashes on various trackdays, it's just a very common situation whereby you remember going a certain speed in your previous session, and you go into the next session remembering that speed but it's inappropriate with cold tire. That may no longer be true nowdays since street and trackday tires have virtually no warm up time but the racers running slicks or DOT race tires will always have risky out laps.

Sorry about your friend. I had the same situation on my zx6r with brand new rear tire. I somehow saved it. Any advice on what you supposed to do and what NOT supposed to do at the second you know your rear has slipped out?
@cchief249
@cchief249 11 ай бұрын
Thanks man. Yeah they’re scary situations. My advice is to trim off throttle but not cut the throttle. You want some throttle for the rear when it catches traction again to hopefully save it. It’s common to get scared and chop the throttle, however this leaves no wheel spin to the tire when it catches, making the snap back worse. And definitely do not hit the brake, you want to minimize the inputs to the bike, they want to go straight just let it correct itself. Hope that helps!

Maybe there was! From my recollection, we meant to go out together to get riding in, so I chose to go off with him to see if he was okay but also just because I wasn’t going to go out and ride alone, that wasn’t the point of that session. Also been in Cali long enough that I’m conditioned to their red flags, which is to stop on track to let ambulance out, so I would have just been sitting in track anyway, might as well be by him to help in any way I could. Won’t fully deny target fixation, but this was just my decision I made at that time. Good or better riders I’m not sure matters, we all know there’s a bunch of stuff that runs through our head when this stuff happens. Anyway, cheers!

Absolutely under no circumstances should anyone ever stop to assist. The emergency personel need to get out as quickly as possible and they need everyone to first pit out. This is the first thing that is stressed at any track event. Also offering first aid can make matters much worse it’s not for us to diagnose.
@cchief249
@cchief249 Жыл бұрын
I appreciate your comments and see where you’re coming from! However, this track org requires everyone stop on circuit immediately during a red flag, instead of waiting for all riders to pit out to dispatch ambulance. I wasn’t diagnosing so much as I was supporting him, I’ve also had medical training in the past, but am no means licensed so I didn’t do anything crazy and was careful to not move him.
