I think this video is one of the best ones you've uploaded. I absolutely LOVED all the signs you read for us. I've never seen a cemetery put up signs like that before -- very interesting stuff! There's tons of History packed in that place; it's such a shame to see that it's not looked after. With all the brick and fence work, it must've been a gorgeous cemetery back when Thurber was a thriving town. Great video, Rhetty. I'm actually sitting here watching it all over again. Glad you didn't come across any snakes!!!

Thank you so much for watching! I'm glad you enjoyed it. From what I could tell the Lt. Col that I showed a photo of is the one who dug up a lot of that history and did a lot of it. Now that he's gone or whoever it was I'm afraid it could be easily lost. I wanted to document it because I found it fascinating. I know those bricks are really well known too. Thanks again for watching.

In spite of the lack of mowing, it's a beautiful and peaceful cemetery with the nicest old cemetery fencing I've ever seen in the rural west. I wouldn't mind being buried there even today. Someone put a lot of effort into the gravity gradient survey and research for the signs noting the people buried there and their significance to the Thurber community. It appears to be a labor of love. I live in a mining town, and it is interesting learning about the diversity of the miners, seeing how they lived and reading about the history. I recognized several iris plantings. They multiply on their own, though I believe plants stop flowering after about 7 years. They are relatively drought resistant and the flowers can be quite beautiful and dramatic. Thanks Rhetty for bringing my attention to a wonderful town.

It was a labor of love for sure. The person who did the research and put all the signs and historical aspects there was Leo, the Lt. Col that I had shown a photo of in the cemetery. He really tried to do a lot in there. Sadly the caretakers and family of those in the cemetery are disappearing.

Really fascinating video. I didn't know about Thurber TX before. I live in an older mining town and there is a lot of ethnic diversity in such towns. You should have shown from the asphalt through the first gate and up the hill to get to the cemetery gate. My parents grew up in this area. On one of the graves there is sometimes a doll and sometimes the doll is gone. We sometimes go to New York Hill to eat and see the mockingbirds. I love small towns. I've thought about making my own channel with small towns in Texas but haven't yet.

Greetings from Watkins, CO. That’s a huge cemetery. They need to put sheep or goats in there to graze . They will keep the grass down. You need to get a pickup and pull around a golf cart. That would save you a lot of walking.
@RhettyforHistory
@RhettyforHistory 4 жыл бұрын
I enjoy walking thru places like this and I suppose it could be dangerous for the golf cart to go thru places like this. It for sure would be to the markers. I went to a cemetery a couple years ago where the neighboring person had a goat farm. They thought they were doing the right things by turning the goats loose in it. The goats ate all the grass, weeds and poison ivy but they also climbed on the markers which broke them. So the farmer was purchasing replacement markers. I have also seen it where fire departments have done controlled burns in them and that can turn everything black. Unfortunately you just have to let them grow if you can't get people to actually care for them.

I wonder if they built the Interstate along the old railway beds/roads? My dad was a lead Civil Engineer and he designed and built a lot of those systems. I used to live in the field office trailers with him in the summers all over the country when I wasn't on the relatives farms. Learned how to operate the equipment and read the Dupont blasters handbook as a youngster.

Imagine abandoned cemeteries are common across rural America as people move away to cities and suburban areas. It is sad to see. I wonder if there is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving, cleaning, and protecting our country’s forgotten cemeteries. Thanks for reminding us that these hallowed grounds are out there!

I have never heard of anything like that. If they are not owned and operated by a funeral home or some sort of trust then it's up to every day people like you and me. A lot of times where these ghost towns are there really just isn't anyone who cares about the cemeteries anymore. Sometimes the people that are there came because land was cheap and really have no connection to the cemetery at all. If they are a person like that then they probably won't care for it. It's sad but it's sort of a product of these old boom towns.

You're welcome. Are there any old cemeteries this size that are looked after in the middle of nowhere? This would really cost a lot of money to maintain. Especially if someone had to drive from far away to do it. It's about 75 miles or 120 km from a large city where the funds would even be available. Then that would take an army of people to get this one done.

@@RhettyforHistory Oh my gosh Rhetty, I'm so sorry, I wasn't having a go at you. We have some large abandoned cemeteries out in the scrub (very different to your landscapes), but not many. Some are located where no scrub grows at all. The National Trust funds the upkeep, I think, which is done by rural councils and volunteers to strict guidelines apparently. A 120 km drive is nothing for a rural Aussie, lol. We also have this heritage listing thing over here, they feel that these older graves need to be preserved for our history (much shorter than yours and with smaller population) and genealogy purposes.

Do you think they could get a load of goats to clean this Cemetery up? Great video. This is a great job you're doing. You need to go down to McAlester Oklahoma. They have the miners Memorial there. My husband's grandfather names on that Memorial. Harry Asher Bohrer. Who was also a hero. Save one man's life, went back for the other man. But he collapse, no oxygen. coal mine at Quinton Oklahoma. Buried there with wife. Two sons his in-laws and brother-in-law and my husband.. God bless you for all you and your wife do.

I think the goats could be bad for the cemetery. They love to climb on things and some of those markers are pretty brittle. It may be a place where we just have to appreciate it overgrown. I do plan on going down to McAlester and Krebs. I love to visit that are but I haven't ever made a video of it. That's quite a story of your husband's grandfather. I do love hearing about things like that. Thank you for watching and sharing that!

Might be rattlesnakes around but if you are noisy they will go away or rattle 99.9% of time and in the heat of the day they usually go into holes or rocks to stay cool, coming out to warm up and hunt for mice at sunrise and sunset.

Thanks Rhetty for another great video adventure! 🔝👏🏼 but I don’t understand why the city leave the cemetery like this, there are also people dead recently..
@RhettyforHistory
@RhettyforHistory 4 жыл бұрын
I think those people that have died recently are just ones who have come back home. This is a very large cemetery. In all honestly too hard for one family to take care of. That Bennett name at beginning is the one who started the restuarant in the old brick building that was in the last video. The family still operates it but their connection is not to the rest of the town. They are transplants there as much as I can tell. The Lt. Col that I showed the photo of was someone who was responsible for a lot of the history and maintenance of the cemetery. Now he's gone. There just isn't many people left who have a connection to the cemetery. With the size of this cemetery it would need probably a 100 people or more with weed wackers cutting down grass. There just simply isn't enough people or funds for it. It really is a problem in a lot of old boom towns that have folded. Thank you so much for watching.

Both sheep and goats will clean it up but they will get on the monuments which is also not good. I think the beauty in it is reflected in how the town is now which is a ghost town.

Two very interesting video’s. It is very sad that a whole community can be dispersed at the whim of a mining company . Historical societies at least try to keep the essence of people’s lives alive for us. The history of our forefathers should always remain alive to us.

There is a historical museum that is trying to keep the history alive. That is ran by a University that is quite a ways off. This is pretty typical of any old boom town. When the resources change things like this happen. It's sad though because people lived out their lives there. Thank you so much for watching!

No one left during this time period and the town was actually doing well. The thinking by some historians is that something might have been in the ground from the mines or in the water that helped prevent that flu from taking people there. It's interesting to think about but I certainly don't have the answer as to why virtually no one had it.
