I’m buying my very first boots and plan on going with the captains an do you suggest the Arizona adobe or the canyon? I’m a jeans, chinos, pants guy, and will use the boots for casual wear.

Congrats on your decision! Either is great, but I like the canyon for better coordination with a wide range of items. It's darker and can even go better with grays and blacks which the Adobe would take more finesse to do!

Excellent in-depth review, Patrick. You are right on about Thursday's customer service. Had a QC issue with their Heritage belt, and they quickly sent me a new one, and I got to keep the other.

@rockymtnstyle No, the leather started to split. I did not have the belt but a couple of months. They just requested some pictures of the split, and if I still had the card of who did the QC on it. When they said I could keep the one that was splitting, I used Super Glue to "repair" the belt. It has held. The new one is still wrapped up in the bag it came in. I really like their Heritage belt and plan to purchase another one so i can closely match my Scout chukka that I have in Safari Suede.

I just received my first ever pair of Thursday boots. R&R leather Captains in Arizona Adobe. I don't like boots that are too narrow, so when the Kingmaker last was introduced, I decided it was finally time to get into the brand. Have only worn them once and I think they're going to work out great.

7:01 I noticed the “splatter of glue” on soles on my new boots too. It shouldn’t affect how it wears. But it wigged me out when I saw it, because I was all like; “all I did was put them on in the house, where did this glue come from?!”. It’s not a defect. But on the other hand… damn, that stitching is on another level 😅

Great review, lots to digest. My 1 yo Captains in Brandy definitely feel narrow, but my 7 month old presidents in R&R Tobacco clearly use their intermediate last with the very round toe. I hope that with the very public announcement of the Kingmaker, Thursday will now be more methodical and open about when they make changes to their lasts. When I picked up my presidents, I expected an identical fit as my captains, but found them much more roomy in the toe (a good thing since I found the Captains a bit snug). Having to constantly play the guessing game with fit and sizing can be frustrating.

Dude you hit the nail right on the head with my situation as well, I've experienced the exact same thing owning a pair of captains that I got in July of this year, and a pair of presidents in matte black in the following month, and the presidents are a bit wider in the toe box and way way more comfortable. I was under the impression they were the exact same boot except for the cap toe, but I'm realizing that these captains I bought are not comfortable because they're too narrow in the front. 🤯 my mind's kind of blown right now having found the issue. 😄 Thanks for sharing!

That’s great content explaining the differences between the Thursday lasts. It’s the one negative thing I’ve run into while considering Thursday for my next heritage style boot. Different reviews have said contradicting things especially about sizing within a few years of each other. Now I known why.

Thx for the comment. I brought this to them and they are aware. They have "release notes" now on boot pages so you can look at changes with dates. Definitely a step in the right direction.

@@rockymtnstyle awesome! I don’t have any problem with them constantly trying to improve. It would nice if a lot of other brands put this much effort into improving fit & sizing in their lasts and adding width options actually. It’s the drastic changes in fitting and last shape without warning from an otherwise very transparent brand that would be the problem. I’m glad that they’re taking constructive feedback when they partner with content creators or even just see independent reviews. It’s probably why even some hardcore heritage boot people seem to respect the product.

The website doesn't differentiate between the widths in their release notes, so it's a good assumption that the EE Captain boots are also on the new Kingmaker last.

Good video here. Pls if you wear a size 10 in Thursday what is the length of your foot in inches. I wear a 10.5 in blundstone boots and I have a foot length of 280mm or 11inches. I need this information to help me make an informed buying decision as I live in Europe. Thank you

Dude this is awesome, bro I ordered a pair of captains and brown leather in July of this year. I kept the boots but it turns out they're not comfortable, and I've been trying to figure out what it is about the boot that's not comfortable. I then bought a pair of Presidents in matte black in August, and the toe box on that is a bit wider and it feels so much more comfortable, the difference is night and day. Putting the captain boots on again I think this is the reason why, the old last doesn't quite fit my foot. Thank you for sharing this, looks like I will be ordering a pair of brown captains pretty soon here to try out this new last 👍🏼😄

You know what’s crazy? Just received my boots a few weeks ago. Everything you’ve shown is according to the Kingmaker last. Except the reinforced eyelets.

The rugged and resilient captains and the classic line captains use different lasts. The rugged resilient/stormking now use the kingmaker and the classic line uses the encore last. I think they fit pretty differently especially around the ankle

@@rockymtnstyle They are in fact currently still using the encore last for the classic line captains. you can click on the "release notes" link under each specific boot to see what last is being used. Also, I am currently working with customer service on an issue with a new captain in natural. She confirmed they are encore. BTW. appreciate the review and comparison. very helpful.

I have the Captains in Brown, from their classic line. And a new pair of Arizona Adobe Captains from their rugged and resilient line. The tow box on the classic line is definitely more narrow and pointy. On the R&R, it's more rounded off and roomy.

For sure. I've got the Natural CXL from the classic line and you're right. Different last. At the timing of this video, I was unaware that the classic line had a different last (Encore) and in my talks with Thursday, it never came up. I was a bit disappointed in the lack of info b/c they knew I was making a video about the last. Also they had just put up their "Release Notes" with the last name and I didn't notice it. This video, although it has some value still, could have been way better but I just didn't know what I didn't know. Thank's man!!

What do you they about Thursday Suede"version?

My wife's Thursday chelsea boots in the dark olive suede have held up very well for her. I think the treatment of the suede looks good and is interesting, and does seem to have the weatherproofing qualities they claim. I don't have DIRECT experience with their suede, but I'd consider a men's version of the dark olive suede sometime in the future.

I had the exact same thought as you saw in the unboxing portion. Yes, they lighten. I'm around 12 wears with mine and where they crease near the toes is much much lighter, and the scuff marks on the side is much lighter... probably 1/2 way to the look on the website. They're good, though. Take the time to break in and I'm sure you'll be happy.

Same issue here. I just got mine. They're much darker than the photos but I must say I do love the leather feel and comfort. They're slightly more comfortable than my Vanguards. I think I'm keeping them with the assumption that they will lighten a touch over time.

Trying to decide between AZ Adobe, Tobacco, Canyon. They all look great, just depends on what you have to wear with them. That canyon does look a little too dark, even if does eventually patina. When I wear brown, I like it to look noticeably brown. Anyone with experience on how the AZ Adobe or Tobacco ages? Anyway, nice video. The misstitch on the sole would have really bothered me.

Thx man. Totally agree on your comment about the color and shading. That's the reason I like the Canyon! Less brown. I think I like AA in the pics on the website better, but the one time I saw it in person it was quite lighter.

I think my biggest issue with Thursday is their QC. I have 8 pairs. 6 were perfect. 2 I had an issue with. The good thing, though, is that they do an easy hassle free exchange. I sent the ones back I wasn't happy with and had a new pair in less than a week, at no cost to me. Overall, I love my Thursdays. I think you get a great boot for the price. Just inspect them before you wear them.

You're not wrong. After my own experiences and reading about others, I think it's pretty safe to say they have a business model where they save some money on QC but understand that they need to basically give brand new product to anyone who complains. For them, that must work in the long run. I've had 2 QC issues myself (one boot, one belt) and another that could have been. So yeah - definitely agree.

Good question! It's like a waxed rough out, but a very fine rough out. Not super neppy. It looks GREAT with some wear now. Really a big fan.

I bought the Canyon Captain boots, but when I opened the box I was very surprised by the appearance as they did not look like the Canyon photos. The Canyon photos appeared as though the leather was a bit distressed and maybe even a little oily. The boots I received appear high quality dark brown and I like them, but definitely not what I was expecting. Anyone else have a similar experience?!

I had this experience on my Canyon belt I just got like 6-7 weeks ago. I left my old one at a hotel I think, so I bought a new one. Exactly as you described. They 100% changed the way Canyon leather was made, or maybe just had a batch that should have been rejected but they used it anyways. Who knows. I do like it, as you said, but doesn't exactly match my boots.

@ Exactly - I have heard great things about their customer service, but all they gave me was BS and it took too long to get that - I hate when you cannot call and have to write back and forth, but that’s how it is these days. I treated my boots with Honey Leather then NikWax - going to try them again today. Look great, even though nothing like advertised, but feet were sore yesterday. I usually put cheap insoles in for more cushion like Dr. Scholls, but they seemed to elevate my heels too much in these Canyons. Great video, btw!!

"Constantly Tinkering" are not necessarily words that give me confidence or whatever, though. I think Tried-and-True is also a selling point, but if there's something seriously wrong, then of course it should be changed, but most companies just cut corners after time and try to pretend they are giving you the same quality and value.

Ahh that's terrible to hear, Tony. Sorry you had to deal with that. The main issue with making the boot to $199 is the QC, I think. I haven't had to send things back twice, but I have had 2 returns in my Thursday buying career (1 boot, 1 belt). Thankfully, Thursday's customer service is absolutely top notch in my experience. They are priced so right , from built to leather they are truly a 199.00 boots and nothing more. I bought two pairs of thursdays and do not wear them since my truman , Grant Stone and whites are such a bigger league than them .

The toe on the new last is obnoxiously long . Who needs an extra three inches of shoe past your toes ?? Why change a last ? Why not create a new shoe ? People who are on their 2nd or 3rd pair now have to start from scratch . For me the combo or making the shoe more narrow and the shoe longer makes them look clownish

Thanks for the comment! Totally fair. But, even with the flaws, my overall experiences with Thursday have been overwhelmingly positive on boots, bags, jackets, etc. You gotta understand it's not "highest quality" like they say... but I still feel it's good quality for money when compared to many other pricier options.
