@@Feemy- I just got a pair and my advice is to condition and weather proof your new boots. Reason for immediate conditioning: Even though they are new and unworn, you never know how long they’ve been sitting in inventory since they were built. Reason for immediate weather proofing and/or liquid proofing. It my not be snowing or raining but you may be cooking, or having drinks and oil, food, or drink will eventually find your leather shoes. Proper conditioning weatherproofing, spill protection products for specific leathers will not change the pigment. Using the wrong products will change the appearance but not the functionality or wearability. You get more bang for your $ sticking to neutral (non-pigmented) conditioners if you have various shades of brown plus black leathers.

I’ll add to this that I recently inadvertently changed the color and texture of my copper rough and tough red wing blacksmiths because I used a boot cream that was for smooth leathers. I wrongly assumed that if it was gentle enough for smooth finish leathers, my rough and tough boots could handle it no problem. The new color and texture are not horrible, but it’s just not the same boot that I picked out to purchase.

I just wanted to comment that I did this process on my Arizona Adobes that were stained. I use the exact same products as this video. It worked and they look closer to new now, but I think that suede shampoo really dried out the toe cap and removed some of the original oils. I used both the conditioner and water resist spray afterwards. I’ll have to see how it goes moving forward. I think in retrospect, the best thing to do is just wipe down with water if there’s a bad stain and be vigilant about brushing with the horsehair brush. I’ll try to avoid using the shampoo again if I can.

The question that seems to be popping up consistently down below is “wouldn’t mink oil do just as good of a job on these boots?”. This sounds like a GREAT video idea; however, I’ll answer it again. These particular boots are like a rough out/suede leather. Unless you completely want to change the LOOK and TEXTURE of these boots, you would NOT want to use mink oil. Mink oil has its time and place for SOME leathers, but it will definitely darken most any leather it’s applied to. It’s often a good conditioner for work boots that are taking a beating each day, but it’s not always the best go-to for all boots. Thursday Boots are NOT work boots. They are a well constructed style boot. For many rugged, work boots, yes, mink oil can be a good option. I hope that answers it. Yep...good video idea! 🤔
@Kingfisher12154 жыл бұрын
I actually like Obenauffs vs mink oil but it would be the same result on these boots. I end up using shoe cream if I don't want to change color or darken. Actually I hate to admit but I use Kiwi shoe cream. But it might change the texture. I never buy a rough out or suede leather on my boots.
@Cemmos4 жыл бұрын
@UCkCPIwxskJpk-qGx6DO_i7g Saphir is just about the highest end you can go for shoe care products. There's a reason a lot of cobblers and leatherworkers in general use it as a go-to when working with leather, whether to reinvigorate the leather or as a finish before selling a new product. Junk isn't the right word to use. If anything, mink oil is junk 90% of the time unless you're buying a cheaper pair of $100 work boots that you aren't looking to keep for a decade or two and just toss after a couple of seasons. Mink oil does the trick for throwaway boots that don't need much attention and works well in that regard. It's cheap, helps with water resistance, and conditions enough so that the leather doesn't dry out. Going for mink oil is common because of those reasons, not because it's a top of the line product for every scenario. EDIT: the comment must have been deleted.

I have a pair of nice looking blake stitched rough leather shoes / business shoes Oxford style....and I use a liquid leather balm on them.....then let it dry and go over with medium strong brush over the shoe to roughen up the texture......never had any problems with color or texture change. But then the leather balm is color neutral and it smells so good. Plus they get a bit water resilient ( not waterproof though ) because they are business shoes they dont need to be waterproof.

I had this issue with a pair of Red Wing Blacksmiths in copper rough & tough that I applied boot oil to. To get the boot oil out I used a small Kiwi horsehair brush and a bowl of warm water with a small amount of dish soap dissolved in it. I cleaned each boot 2-3 times, gently rinsing them under warm running water in between washes, wiping them down with a microfiber towel after to get the excess water off. Then I stuffed them with paper and let them dry overnight by an open window. In hindsight it may have only taken one treatment with the dish soap to get the oil out. The dish soap removed the oil, but it also took out the patina and the "pull up" effect from the leather. To restore the depth and patina for this particular Red Wing leather, I used a light treatment of their All Natural Leather Conditioner to put some depth and conditioning back into the leather. Hope that helps!

If you are cleaning older shoes or handbags, how do you know what kind of leather it is so as not to ruin it? I found your channel searching how to clean a pair of cowboy boots that got wet and muddy as well as a older Prada bag that needs a lot of TLC. Other than suede and patent, I had no idea there were differences in leather and I could ruin it by improper cleaning. Now I'm nervous to touch them.

Hi - thank you for the video. I used bees wax on mine and it darkened the leather. Can I expect the boots to become brighter as time goes on?

I recently got the rugged and resilient whiskey captain boots. Would you recommend using Thursday boot's cleaning line of leather cleaner, conditioner, and waterproofing sprays? Or should I go with the suede cleaner?

So if we don’t care (too much) for maintaining the colour and texture normal conditioners are okay if applied sparingly? As in they are unlikely to damage the leather?

Love your videos! Do you know where I can get the Renvoteur or something similar in Australia? Thanks!

Great video, what would you recommend for Truman Shrunken Bison boots to keep the same color? Thanks

Good morning Trent. Have you guys ever resoled any Thursday Cavaliers ? I'd be interested to see how you put the leather overlay over the rubber sole and get the holes to line up to go over the raised rubber nubs. BTW Do you prefer using shoe cream on the heel and sole over edge dressing ?

Thank you sir for the video. I made the unfortunate mistake of using a cream on my copper rugged & resilient boots. They still look good, but your correct, it changed the look. Could I use a saddle soap on the boots to work out the cream I put into them, let them dry and do what you've done in the video to your pair of boots or would it not matter? Thanks for the videos you guys do, I've seriously considered learning the trade of becoming a cobbler, it looks like a very rewarding way of working with your hands.

Thanks for watching! If you’re okay with how the boots look now after using both cream, I’d say you’re good to go. This video was a how-to on how to care for them if you don’t want to change the look and texture at all. It’s definitely not going to hurt them to use cream or conditioner. If you do want to start over, I’d clean them with suede soap a few times to remove the oils from the cream.

How did the look change? I think i'd want a more smooth, polish-able look to my boots. The reason I got this "finish" was it was all that was available in an EE width.
@davidmacy22523 жыл бұрын
The look became a more polished look...probably what you're looking for? I was trying to keep more of the matte finish. When I put the cream on them it took the matte finish away, but they still look very nice.

I’ll be honest...I placed liquid moisturizing cream on my Arizona Adobes. Don’t get me wrong...they’re still beautiful, but not very rugged anymore. I immediately purchased another pair following my whoopsie.
