My compliments to both of you for showing us this brand of craftsmanship. It's nice to see these shoes being restored and put back into service. I have a better appreciation for buying quality that will last and able to be restored rather than always buying disposable junk that ends up in the trash. You're making a difference. Thank you for the videos.

Do you need to waterproof them with the spray when they are brand new out of the box? I just got a pair and am hesitant to use the waterproofing spray as it may react with all the oils that are present in the R&R line of Captains.
@pattgsm

@@Feemy- I just got a pair and my advice is to condition and weather proof your new boots. Reason for immediate conditioning: Even though they are new and unworn, you never know how long they’ve been sitting in inventory since they were built. Reason for immediate weather proofing and/or liquid proofing. It my not be snowing or raining but you may be cooking, or having drinks and oil, food, or drink will eventually find your leather shoes. Proper conditioning weatherproofing, spill protection products for specific leathers will not change the pigment. Using the wrong products will change the appearance but not the functionality or wearability. You get more bang for your $ sticking to neutral (non-pigmented) conditioners if you have various shades of brown plus black leathers.

We didn't have specific shoe care products to apply for some of our Rugged Collection when we first released the style. A lot of oils and tended to darken the leather. But we now have a great cleaner that works perfectly with our Rugged leathers. To clean these leathers, you can spray the Leather Cleaner( available on our website) and use a clean Microfiber Cloth to wipe them down, as well as a Premium Shoe Brush to remove any dirt on the surface.--- In addition to everything Trenton & Heath Recommend :)

The question that seems to be popping up consistently down below is “wouldn’t mink oil do just as good of a job on these boots?”. This sounds like a GREAT video idea; however, I’ll answer it again. These particular boots are like a rough out/suede leather. Unless you completely want to change the LOOK and TEXTURE of these boots, you would NOT want to use mink oil. Mink oil has its time and place for SOME leathers, but it will definitely darken most any leather it’s applied to. It’s often a good conditioner for work boots that are taking a beating each day, but it’s not always the best go-to for all boots. Thursday Boots are NOT work boots. They are a well constructed style boot. For many rugged, work boots, yes, mink oil can be a good option. I hope that answers it. Yep...good video idea! 🤔
@Kingfisher1215
@Kingfisher1215 3 жыл бұрын
I actually like Obenauffs vs mink oil but it would be the same result on these boots. I end up using shoe cream if I don't want to change color or darken. Actually I hate to admit but I use Kiwi shoe cream. But it might change the texture. I never buy a rough out or suede leather on my boots.

@UCkCPIwxskJpk-qGx6DO_i7g Saphir is just about the highest end you can go for shoe care products. There's a reason a lot of cobblers and leatherworkers in general use it as a go-to when working with leather, whether to reinvigorate the leather or as a finish before selling a new product. Junk isn't the right word to use. If anything, mink oil is junk 90% of the time unless you're buying a cheaper pair of $100 work boots that you aren't looking to keep for a decade or two and just toss after a couple of seasons. Mink oil does the trick for throwaway boots that don't need much attention and works well in that regard. It's cheap, helps with water resistance, and conditions enough so that the leather doesn't dry out. Going for mink oil is common because of those reasons, not because it's a top of the line product for every scenario. EDIT: the comment must have been deleted.

I’ll add to this that I recently inadvertently changed the color and texture of my copper rough and tough red wing blacksmiths because I used a boot cream that was for smooth leathers. I wrongly assumed that if it was gentle enough for smooth finish leathers, my rough and tough boots could handle it no problem. The new color and texture are not horrible, but it’s just not the same boot that I picked out to purchase.

I had this issue with a pair of Red Wing Blacksmiths in copper rough & tough that I applied boot oil to. To get the boot oil out I used a small Kiwi horsehair brush and a bowl of warm water with a small amount of dish soap dissolved in it. I cleaned each boot 2-3 times, gently rinsing them under warm running water in between washes, wiping them down with a microfiber towel after to get the excess water off. Then I stuffed them with paper and let them dry overnight by an open window. In hindsight it may have only taken one treatment with the dish soap to get the oil out. The dish soap removed the oil, but it also took out the patina and the "pull up" effect from the leather. To restore the depth and patina for this particular Red Wing leather, I used a light treatment of their All Natural Leather Conditioner to put some depth and conditioning back into the leather. Hope that helps!

Great video! Coincidence that I was looking to treat these very boots! However, I was on an international trip and I made the mistake to have a shoe shiner clean and polish my boots:/ they added wax and now they are shiny same as the dress captains. I just wanted to comment that I did this process on my Arizona Adobes that were stained. I use the exact same products as this video. It worked and they look closer to new now, but I think that suede shampoo really dried out the toe cap and removed some of the original oils. I used both the conditioner and water resist spray afterwards. I’ll have to see how it goes moving forward. I think in retrospect, the best thing to do is just wipe down with water if there’s a bad stain and be vigilant about brushing with the horsehair brush. I’ll try to avoid using the shampoo again if I can.

Great video! Would these procedures be similar for Red Wing Rough and Tough leathers?

New to the rugged and resilient line. Can I use saddle soap instead of the suede shampoo?

No, saddle soap is not for suede or nubuck from what Ive read.

No, I wouldn’t recommend it. I’d recommend using a suede soap instead, like I used in the video.

We developed a great cleaner last year that works perfectly with our Rugged leathers. To clean these leathers, you can spray the Leather Cleaner( available on our website) and use a clean Microfiber Cloth to wipe them down, as well as a Premium Shoe Brush to remove any dirt on the surface.--- Trenton & Heath also have shared some great recommendations in this video :)

I don’t know why my Arizona Adobes are way darker than this. They came out of the box darker. I’ve worn them for 2 years and haven’t added any conditioner and they are still dark, how could this be?

So, I’ve had a pair of Terracotta Captains for about 5 years. I’m just now learning that I should not have put leather conditioner on it. Should I start treating it as suede or has too much damage been done?

I'm curious. You mentioned that your boots are Arizona Adobe, but they look so much more yellow than the pictures on Thursday's site that show the Arizona Adobe as a much more reddish shade. Yours look more like the burnt copper to me. Am I mistaken?

I have the Thursday Captains matte grey leather boots is there anything special you would do for those? I just bought them and I'm pretty anxious about doing anything to them because I don't want to ruin them

The front of my rugged and resilient Thursday boots has gone quite dry when compared to the less weathered sides of the boots. Is there a way to restore this without changing the leather too much? Thanks for videos, great content.

Hi - thank you for the video. I used bees wax on mine and it darkened the leather. Can I expect the boots to become brighter as time goes on?

Dumb question … but only because I’m color blind lol. I looked up the sapphire shoe cream for the edges. I noticed they are sorta cracking and drying a bit. There’s a bunch of colors of this shoe cream. I have Arizona Adobe. Are the edges black , or brown? They seem black, but my color blindness tricks me at times. Great video , I learned a lot !
