Daydream Nation is one of the greatest albums of all time! Not up for debate.

Saw Sonic Youth, bought the albums and 45s and they still hold up as amazing artsy punk rock. In the 80s you had Television Personalities, Dinosaur Jr, PIL, The Replacements and SONIC YOUTH.
@danielstoddart Жыл бұрын
Also you had the Fall, Wire, the Jesus and Mary Chain, Meat Puppets, the Minutemen, Black Flag, the Jesus Lizard, Gang of Four, My Bloody Valentine, the Slits, and the Raincoats, all of which were major influences on Sonic Youth

I agree def Sonic Youth in the 80's was so exciting as was all the music coming out then. I felt this shift for sure with everything coming out into the open in the 90's and the party feel I associate closely with the era. God it was fun! haha Im so glad I got the 80's and 90's- Silver Rocket is the real jam on this record !

It's an unbelievably interesting interview, but it's such a shame that the sound levels of the two microphones are so different. I have to turn my volume up quite a lot to hear Thurston, but then when the interviewer talks it's super loud and I have to quickly turn my volume down, which is really frustrating. I would have thought that could have been rectified in post production by using a compressor or limiter maybe, or something similar? But regardless, thanks for the interview, it's really great information :)

The interviewer's mic technique is better than Thurston's.

Sorry about that. We were at the mercy of the venue's engineer and we couldn't notice it from the stage.

@@ClassicAlbumSundays People don't realize that these venues aren't concert quality sound, and even with that, it is already expensive. It wouldn't be just to prop up a phone. Besides, Thurston and experimental sound go hand in hand. We can deal with that.

I was the natural demographic for hating this record: A still-teenage underground rock/hard core punk fan who dug their early noise, but it was just too awesome to hate.

It's beautiful to know. I mean I was in shock and furs. We couldn't believe what. I think we. Our sonic youth has been declared a war zone on drugged. Avante underground undergarments were. You can see. Don't you know. Aren't you quaint. quaraNTeeNs in the house!!

she keeps saying 1998 but wasn't this an 80's record? 1988?
@ClassicAlbumSundays5 жыл бұрын
You are absolutely right. The album came out in 1988. By the time I hosted this event, I had hosted 7 interview events in that week alone and was on serious painkillers for a tooth problem ;)! I didn't realise I had said it until listening back to the interview much later but thanks for pointing it out. I just wish somebody had said something at the time! Thanks for listening.
@zacharyrosenberg25615 жыл бұрын
He was agreeing with you, too. It started to feel like an exercise in gaslighting an entire audience. You recovered great though - it was really fun to hear him talk about the pop culture references that were injected into the album, and how he felt about their place in the NYC music/ art lineage. I've been listening and loving this album for decades, and now re-listening with completely new context. Thanks!

LOL! Thanks@@zacharyrosenberg2561 and I'm glad you liked the interview. For me it was a real dream come true as I played this album all the time on college radio (another reason I shouldn't have slipped with the date!).

I thought I heard that as well, I even had to double-check to make sure I wasn't going crazy (with the 'mandela effect'!) then thought I must've misheard it! I'm also on painkillers for a... "tooth problem" too, so I thought it was probably just me. (I'm kidding, she's a professional; it happens to the best of us).

her voice is WAY louder than Thurston's. Its a bit silly to be sitting down and holding the mics in this day and age. John Peel is probably laughing his ass off in the afterlife. Great content though! Favorite band! top 5 anyways...

GRATEFUL DEAD R NOT A JAM BAND. That is a horseshit label. Those dudes were not aimlessly looking. All it takes is listening to all the incredible live recordings. Tunes have variations, sometimes in length. Grateful Dead r the mofos.

I really need to get over my intense dislike of this man. I’m not Kim Gordon and he is integral to one of the biggest bands in my life. It’s hard though.
