Thwing - “Narrow Strip of Land”
This week in the East Riding, we’re in a place called Thwing - a farming settlement predominately, but a place which has just as much to do with the heavens above the it as it does with the land around it. In 1795, a rock would come hurtling from the sky, crashing into the East Riding landscape and forming a crater in a field. The spot where that heavenly body landed is now marked by a column, built by the landowner of its day. The event would go on to inspire several works of literature and films, but it would also ensure Thwing had a place on the map.
Until recently, the village had a pub which was named after the meteorite. It was called The Falling Stone, but since it closed a couple of years ago, Thwing has become very isolated. With no shop, pub or daily bus service, perhaps the 12th century church and the gorgeous Wolds countryside are the only things left to attract the casual visitor today.
There are some other great bits of history here though. This was the birthplace of two religious figures - John Twenge and Thomas Lamplugh - and Thwing Mere is also much more than just a pond. It was there, during WWII, where tanks and planes would add their bits of Thwing’s history.
So come with me for a walk around this village, but keep an eye on the sky for falling rocks!
