Is it likely that the oversized PCB and case in the Massdrop and Monoprice designs are to allow enough surface area to component ratio to keep the total package running cool with just a little passive airflow? My SMSL SP200 THX-888 amplifier is much smaller than these designs, and has a much tighter PCB. You can definitely feel the case of the amplifier warm up with time.
@Bloogly893 жыл бұрын
I think the big spacing is more to reduce electromagnetic interference between the components inside the case. Contributes to the extremely low distortion spec (THD)

Right now Drop has the SMSL THX-888 for $140 and I feel at this price point with the One still being $200 the SMSL just seems like way more value. I know it isn't truly balanced but I think most people would never know. And it really is a great Amp even more so for the $140 price point.

Making things bigger is basically marketing. It "justifies" the price that way, bigger/heavy feels more "quality".

Yikes, those solder joints look worse than the ones I just did for my keyboard... and this was my first time soldering, lol. I'd love some DAC reviews since it really seems like there's only a few options to get: either be cheap and spend ~$200 to get the Schiit Modius or Geshelli Labs JNOG2 or spend $700+ to get the Schiit Bifrost 2, the Ares 2, or some other R2R DAC.

those are like some really high-end PCB for all I can tell, like the one last gen motherboard makers use to shield the traces coming from the RAM to the CPU for better signal integrity.

Is this anything like the THX AAA-0 Amp in the Pandas? If they can fit that Amp inside those headphones then the AAA did not need to be that big. Anyways, DMZ should re-evaluate the pandas now that a new firmware is out along with SoundID App compatibility.

@kcmichaelm3 жыл бұрын
It’s true but also overkill. There’s no need for it to be this spread out, you can isolate and still be much closer. The 789 had a similar, incredibly sparse, layout. It’s a little bit of an odd choice.

Also best Amp/Dac combo for $200 or under whether it be portable or desktop, all in one unit or a stack. Sooooo many choices for a new comer to this field especially on Amazon where there seems to be a plethora of $50 to $100 amp & Dacs.

Schiit Magni 3+ and a Modi 3. Done. The Magni 3+ is such a great amp. I was going back and forth with a Darkvoice 336 and was sometimes mistaken which amp I was plugged into in the dark. The Darkvoice has a slight softening of the highs with good tubes and the Magni 3+ had a slightly more robust bass with certain tracks which surprised me considering the amount of power the DV puts out into 600 ohms compared to the Magni 3+. Interestingly the Asgard 3 has a slightly more robust bass than the Magni 3+ and smoother more tube like treble but never sacrifices accuracy. More info than you were after? I just had coffee.

I have an iFi Zen Dac for almost everything and I'll just buy a Liquid Spark for when I need more power (i.e. DT880 600 ohm) and use the iFi as a DAC and it should be good enough right? Maybe I'll buy a tube amp at some point, but that's further into the future, cause there's a bunch of headphones and a portable source and a keyboard to buy in the way.
