It looks good, I plan on getting it and trying it out. From what I’ve seen of other reviews it seems short but sweet. Hopefully with enough support and positive reception, soulslikes will change the formula to be more bloodborn/sekiro inspired as pure dark souls clones bore me. It might mean this studio can make another game of bigger scale too.

Agreed. Sekiro and Elden Ring show you can still be souls like but have more offensive action minded gameplay. Still, imagine something like the nemesis system combined with good souls combat. There are alot of souls+x combos yet to be explored.

Have you tried the game yet? I found it to be pretty good. There are some criticisms to make such as the short play time, lack of meaningful exploration, and low enemy variety, but I was pleased that the combat mechanics feel good. It seems like the devs genuinely tried to add their own innovations to the tried and true Sekiro combat mechanics and succeeded. The way you can freely respec talents and the variety of plague weapons gives the player more options to craft their own combat style instead of being forced to rely on deflection only.

Picked this up over the weekend and have been enjoying myself. The combat is tight, closer to Sekiro in execution than Bloodborne, with some obvious influences from Demon's Souls map design. Visuals are fine for its price point. The lack of voice is noticeable, but that's one of those areas where it's better not to have it than do it wrong. All-in-all it's one of the better attempts at a Souls-inspired action RPG and I'll certainly be finishing it this week.

I already feel bad for this game. It seems to be getting a lot of salt from the FromSoft community in the comment section. Can't say I'm surprised because any fan base that views the company they like is flawless will only see the worst in a game that's similar to those made by that company, but I think a lot of people are forgetting this is a little indie team and not some huge AAA game. Some of the best games I've played have been indie games, and I think this one deserves a fair shake. It's definitely going to get a buy from me.

Hm, I'm surprised at how vehement the Fromsoft purist faction in the comment section is. There are so many people bashing the game while clearing having not played it. I find all the generic "trash Bloodborne wannabe" type comments especially funny because anyone who's actually played the game will know that the combat is much more Sekiro inspired than Bloodborne. At anyrate, having gone through most of the game I might as well leave my two cents. Contrary to popular opinion, I'm actually rather pleased with the tweaks to the combat system they made. The Wounds vs Health system could have been extremely clunky and tedious, but I found it was actually engaging to balance between attacks that dealt Wounds vs Attacks that dealt Health Damage. My biggest praise has to go with the dynamic talent system which allows for meaningful adjustments to your combat style, allowing you to customize your character for either your own preference or to suit the situation. It feels like it was inspired by Sekiro's Shinobi arts, but being able to freely adjust your talent tree and the existence of mutually exclusive branching paths has great flexibility. One criticism I see sometimes leveled at Sekiro was that there was only one optimal way to play, learn to parry or die. In Thymesia, mastering the parry is a strong and effective way to play, but you have alternative options, and even options to lean into parry! You can choose to reduce your parry/deflect frames to gain stronger counter attack damage. Alternatively you can exchange your deflect for a more standard block that takes chip damage. If you don't want to mess with blocking, you can upgrade your dash to have extended range or a double dash and beat the content using evasion only. There are talents that synergize with different styles that you can combine to fit you. If you take the defense stance over the deflection, it might be a good idea to pair that with a talent that lets you regain energy when you take damage. Then you can use a Plague Weapon that turns that Energy into HP to become a powerful defensive tank. Being able to change your talents at any resting point means you can adjust your play style at any time, and even experiment from boss to boss. With a slow but powerful boss you might want to doge and hit them with a powerful Plauge Weapon. With a faster boss you might try taking a more defensive options etc etc. In Soulsgames, your stats often lock you into playstyles, and while you can reset it is still a process. For example, if your build in Elden ring is a heavy weapons dual wield build that focuses on jump attacks, you'll pretty much be stuck jump attacking your way through the whole game. There will be little to no variety in your playthrough. That being said, the game isn't perfect. The overworld enemies lack variety. They are pretty much all humanoid type enemies, and can be knocked down with the Greatsword Plauge weapon. This makes the Greatsword extremely effective at taking down all small-fry enemies without much worry of counter attack. Once I found it, I rarely used other Plague Weapons in the overworld. I'm not a big fan of exploration, so the lack of a map was annoying to me. The maps are pretty linear, which was a plus in my book. I suppose being forced to remember does fit in with the theme of the game, so I'm not going to complain too much. Overall, it is a short but highly polished game with solid mechanics. There are no micro transactions or bloated time wasting mechanics. The game progression is well crafted to fit the short play time. The mechanics are borrowed from the Souls games, but solid innovations have been made to make it a unique and fun experience. This is the kind of game we should be encouraging game devs to make. It disappoints me that a solid game is getting a bad rap by elitists and people who haven't played the game while predatory companies are making millions off of brain dead lootboxes and gacha games.

@@marekbabik2791 not fond of using the nature of the game as an indie title or its budget as an excuse, in a day and age where indie title can at times mock AAA studios' quality even incidentally. The only reasonable excuse I can see is that is the dev's first game, and even for that there's been smash hits and the game was overhyped for months and recently because of the flood of sponsored reviews with early keys. Do not be mistaken, it can be an enjoyable game. However, is not for everyone (especially among soulslike enthusiast that'll be nitpicky with it), is pretty short and hardly worth playing more than once unless you really want to get all five endings. At best is an entry point to the genre, but in quality is dire need of polish with or without comparing it, and most of the positive reactions to it have been over desperation for another soulslike to play instead of questioning the game's design. It's a game you either skip, or give it a chance while on sale.

I finished the game not that long ago and I believe this is a good bang for the bucks. Gameplay wise the game really slaps which is impressive considering this is their first game. As a Sekiro enjoyer, the parry feels pretty satisfying although very punishing if you miss. Difficulty wise, it's only as difficult as you make it for yourself... Meaning there are lots of option to make the game feel easier or harder. The lore is interesting but I'm not a big fan of reading through everything since there isn't any VA. In the past comparing games to souls games sent my expectations into the stratosphere. But I was usually disappointed. As someone who has played through Bloodborne at least 7 or 8 times this game has a lot to live up to. I will try this at some point but honestly this game looks pretty hollow uninspired and clunky. Fromsofts games are so much more than hard bosses and stamina management.
@TheSpectralForce2 жыл бұрын
The difficulty souls-likes have is that Fromsoft is constantly one upping themselves. Which means smaller devs inspired by their work are constantly being outpaced by the ones that created the genre. Constantly playing catch up and remixing mechanics they see in each new From game that releases. It's not hard not to be sceptical when you see new souls likes because of this. By the time we get bored of Fromsoft they release a new game that is almost always a resounding success.
@synthraofficial53662 жыл бұрын
It seems like it has some good depth to me, honestly. This isn't a FromSoft game, it's just just inspired by it. And to be fair, we can't say everything about its depth until we try it aside from watching a full playthrough, I guess. I'm happy to give it a try. Not really fair to hold an indie title selling a game for half the price to a company with much more experience. If I went in to every soul's late game assuming that it had to meet from soft standards, I'd probably be disappointed in everything. I have to take it as its own individual thing and leave it at that. I'm not saying you can't have a valid opinion, though. But still.

@@steve87j I disagree for both. Both those games seem like they are going to be that way but end up being far simpler. Sekiro is probably the worst game I have ever played in regards to explaining itself to the player, the game didn't click until my full second playthrough and that's pretty awful. Bothe games are not about memorizing but training patterns of response. In most cases an enemy will not demand a specific response, instead they will punish a specific response. In Sifu it's often that the enemy only hits you if you dodge in one specific wrong direction, all 3 other directions will be fine. In Sekiro you can often just spam deflect because poor timing doesn't matter as much as you think. Often jumping and dodging to the side will avoid thrusts, you just won't get a mikuri counter for doing so. Sekiro also has early bosses that are major exceptions to most of the rules it sets up and it's baffling why they are there.

I want to give this game a chance with the mindset of it being it’s own identity. What makes a souls like anyway?
@Blueturtle35272 жыл бұрын
I’d consider a soulslike to be a game with: losing resources on death and having to go back and pick it up, enemies that require cautious focus, punishing bosses that require (typically) stamina management and learning their move set to beat, healing/magic flasks that refill at checkpoints, enemies resetting after resting at checkpoints, currency being combined with experience needed to level up, an upgrade system, (typically) an open exploration path in the world that lets you experience areas in a nonlinear fashion to what the story technically wants, multiple endings based on actions you took during the playthrough, and probably a combination of the gui and control layout as I don’t know of any other genre that has a similar control scheme to souls games. At least an ideal soulslike would be like this in my opinion, obviously a smaller team working with a lot less budget would have to cut corners somewhere unfortunately Other people would likely add the gloomy atmosphere, a story that is not explicitly stated and usually needs to piece it together by finding environmental clues and item/spell descriptions, perhaps a lack of focus on ranged weapons and spells even if they’re present in the game, invasions, and melee combat focused on parrying and critical hits. Though personally I feel like those are just theme and fromsoft’s particular way of storytelling and not something I think a good soulslike would actually need but other companies tend to copy anyway.

I would put sekiro up there with nioh, although both game ips are strong where the other falls short.

I have good news for you...Wo Long is on its way. Made by Team Ninja as well, it's basically Nioh's combat system being further evolved and the setting is now China's 3 Kingdoms.

@@sensoeirensen i did spend over 1000hours in just Bloodborne and DS3 ...and now Elden Ring is there ... i would say Bloodborne with combination of some trick attacks in Thymesia or some combos in Nioh would be awesome ...

AFAIK, it's not. It was originally a PC only release, but due to pressure they extended to consoles, but PS5/Series X only.

@synthraofficial53662 жыл бұрын
TBF they are taking inspiration from Bloodborne which is a VERY dreary game to start with. Basically any game set in Victorian London (give or take) is always going to be dreary. I don't think I've ever seen one that wasn't.
