Thypoch Simera 35mm f/1.4 Review & Samples Compared to Leica & Zeiss

I have taken the lens apart and here are a few observations and things you can easily change to improve the lens: 1. Don't worry about the holes for the focus scale. There is another layer of shell beneath it before getting to the focus mechanism. 2. The lens does not have a helicoid, it has a completely different kind of movement inside for focusing. Pretty good against dust. 3. The infinity lock can easily be removed if you don't like it. Treat it like a screw and a bolt.. 4. After removing the infinity lock, you can easily fit a focus tab on the barrel, be it a metal one or a rubber one. I CNC'ed some brass and got it black painted. Looks and works amazing. 5. The 0.7m detent can be a bit too strong. You can easily remove the rear lens mount and pick out the spring responsible for it. Just squish it a bit to reduce the strength. The detent will be a lot smoother. Hopefully this helps.

Would you be able to share your results on point 4? How did you attach the focus tab? Does it slide over the metal piece which holds the locking screw?

Just as an FYI, since this is an issue for me as well; I asked Thypoch (in the form of a comment on instagram) and they said they'd be adding the tab to the 28mm. So I assume the 35mm will also follow suit.

Always wonderful seeing new players enter the fold. Interesting time for Thypoch as well, since the Voigtlander 28mm Nokton was released around the same time as the Thypoch duo. Though at a $200 price difference. My favorite thing about third party M-Mount lenses, is I not only get to use them on my film and digital Leitz Gear, but get an adapter for any other system I have and boom, good to go. The LLL 50mm f/2 looks just as at home on the M240 as it does on an Olympus E-P5 even though one is Full Frame, and one is MFT.

Good review … except the scale used at the end. Putting a 2 for the size of the Zeiss just means nothing.

There’s a handful of people out there making black dots and some other replacement dots for M10s and M11s. They vary in quality, but they get the job done.

Hi. I shoot the M10 and after lots of conversation and consideration I went with the zeiss. I haven’t tried the Typoch but I did try the Summilux vs the Zeiss and (somehow when paired with the m10) I totally prefer the result from the Zeiss. Weight/size is a non-issue for me. I’m actually gobsmacked by the lens and it’s definitely a keeper.

Nice round up Benj. I've got the Zeiss. While I agree it's certainly on the large side, it's something I can forgive because the brilliant IQ, wide-open sharpness, character and handling are all top notch. It might be a forever lens. Works like a charm on the M11 and actually balances nicely on the SL2 too.

Its like i've written serveral times, before Benji tested it - the Zeiss Distagon ZM is still the best M 35/1.4, even the Leica have had received 2 design iterations since ca. 2004-5 to nowadays...whileas i don't have a M setup, i enjoy the 35mm focal length onto another system...have had it way long ago, and now again since few weeks.

Hey Benj - as always thank you for this nice review of this very interesting lens. When you are talking about sharpness of the Simera, it looks a bit as you are just referring about the wide open sharpness. How does it perform when stopped down to f5.6 or f8? Also information about the flare behavior seems a bit contradicting as far as what I've seen so far.

Hello, thanks a lot for this comparison, unfortunatly once again and you are not the only one, every youtuber seems to forget its real competitor that is the Voigtlander Nokton 35m f/1.5. Because if I follow your logic its less sharp, has worst aberration but hopefully is cheaper. Looks strange to me. Because lets be honest people investing in Summilux lineup, have the money and know what they buy, they are not the prospect for Thypoch lenses. Thypoch customer will consider either a used 'cron or a Voigt compared to this. This is what we hope to read about. This being said thank-you for the presentation and the quality of your video.

Still waiting to get the Voigtlander in my hands. Unfortunately it’s not that I don’t know it exists, but more than I don’t have an unlimited library of lenses to compare, even if I do have the contacts, the timing doesn’t always work out. Once I get the Voigtlander in, the Thypoch will be here to compare it to as well.

Nice but odd scoring. So the Leica gets a 3 for being "stupidly expensive", rightfully. My problem is the Zeiss gets a 2 for weight... so it's beyond stupid heavy? Obviously not, bad score noted!

Scoring things with points is already a dubious proposition and then you add in half points and it's downright useless. It's like how 91 is a terrible score for fine wine...you've got this scoring kind of compressed at the top here and are adding even further increments in what is already a kind of arbitrary scale. "If I could give the Zeiss higher than a 10 I would." The way you do that is to score the others lower. I can suspend my disbelief and enjoy it as entertainment but when you start doing half points you lose me.

@@benjhaischyeah I agree. A more qualitative than quantitative scoring would be better. I mean you basically did that before in the video with some aspects but going through the categories and just rating them in comparison by giving them 1st 2nd 3rd with an explanation would be better imo.
