So, I did warn you about at least putting the primer, undercoat, and 1st base coat on before assembly ;) Personally, I got a large empty cardobard box, and sprayed the aformentioned coats, do it light and short sprays so it applies evenly. Then, depending on the colour scheme you can put it altogeather for the detailing and final coat, or do each piece in turn if it's a lot of small pices or you have an insane colour scheme - like, some of the "center pieces" the big boys, can end up needing 100 different colour applications, or intricate patterns... They're not so much out of order in that you have options of how they will look... After seeing these new connection/fitted/snap-on designs I'm not a fan, it actually limits the options you have in "modding" your troop to be more unique. Oh, one "cheat-sheet" tip, get yourself a freestanding magnifying glass... trust me, that will make painting things like faces/eyes significantly easier, also makes it easier to smooth over any mistakes, and put on ultra-fine details such as glyphs and painting on hyms and glyphs.
@Caderynwolf
@Caderynwolf 8 ай бұрын
It's a great job btw, especially for a 1st try, in fact it's better than most people can do after years of practice - but also, when you're painting up literally hundreds of the buggers you end up only putting in your real effort on the center-pieces, the HQ guys and the Unique models, the grunts tend to get the "good enough" treatment.

Not really. This is why we have something called "standards". It's a good thing to have standards because it's what gives you the motivation to become better. If your standards are higher than the produced result, you should try harder. But i guess this is an outrageous concept in the Panderverse we're living in.

10 nails were sacrificed for the Emperor. Both the mini and the video turned out great! Thanks for taking the time to film and edit this, it was fun to see the process. I'm sure you've seen it in videos but my tip would be remember that the back of your knife blade is good for smoothing out bumps/lines in plastic. It's sharper than you might think yet it's not as aggressive as the blade; less likely to dig in by accident.

This was a really nice watch. You're a natural. I expect you'll be developing some advanced techniques very quickly. Regarding the decal softener: The reason it destroyed the transfer is because its a mild solvent. You apply it over the top of a transfer once its dry, if the transfer hasn't conformed to the shape of the part correctly or its over rivets or something. It will melt it slightly. Each additional thin layer of it will melt it more. You can keep doing this until you're happy. In cases where I want a transfer over rivets and gaps in armour plates, I'll apply anywhere up to five coats of the stuff, letting each coat dry completely. Once you're happy with how it looks, then put your stormshield over it if you want to.

Exceptional start! You took to it very naturally. Next model you could sand/scrape down some of the moldlines but for smaller dudes it doesn't matter much. Biggest tip I thought of is for brush care - try to keep the paint from getting all the way up into the end of the brush and into the ferrule (where the bristles meet the uh.. shaft).. over time the paint will dry in there and the bristles will begin to separate and won't hold a point well anymore. Not a huge deal for cheaper brushes but when you get some fancier sable ones it's a must-do.
@ti8ick
@ti8ick 8 ай бұрын
Thank you! I did notice how much difficult it is to clean the brushes when you got paint all the way in the ferrule and I'll try to remember this next time I paint and not dip it in like crazy 🤣 Yeah that huge mold line on the pants was the bane of my existence lol I have no idea how I missed it

@@ti8ick The brighter the color, the more a moldline will show underneath it. The ones that go right across backpacks are even worse than legs! As for the brushes; even if you end up having to retire them, they can still do rough duty like for drybrushing, applying texture/glue/transfers, or cutting the bristles down and using them for stippling effects. Great job! Your Ork was awesome too. Before you know it you'll be doing commissions for us!

Couple things I picked up on along the way that might be good tips moving forward: The way I prefer to remove moldlines is with the exacto-knife. Place it gently against the mini at a 45 degree angle, with the edge on the moldline and facing away from you. Then carefully drag the edge of the blade over the moldline towards you. The gentler the better. Prefer to take 3 passes rather than the first mucking un the surface. Grainy primer coats happen with the lighter primers in direct sunlight. Hot weather might exacerbate that issue as well. The paint will dry ever so slightly in the air and not make a smooth coat on the mini. A little booth made from a cardboard box to spray in a garage or at least a bit of shade would help. Feel free to experiment a bit with the colour primer you use. I prefer black, as it helps with working from dark to light and from recesses to highlights. There is no best primer though. Lighter primers make for brighter colours in some cases, especially orange and yellow, and would require fewer layers to get a smooth coat. In terms of thinning, better to thin slightly too much than too little. It shouldn't be super runny (unless it's contrast, shade or you're glazing) and it shouldn't be gloopy and globby. Anything in between works, and as you learn you'll work out what works best for which paint/application. Metallics don't necessarily ruin a brush in the short term, but if you want your tools to last, best to keep your metallics and non-metallics seperate. So seperate brushes, separate palette and separate water cup for cleaning. Heck yeah! Improvise! Jeans have seams too! ^^ For eyes: Work from the inside out! Much simpler to do the red first, and then paint over any mistakes (happy accidents) later. This is even more the case when you get to actual faces. Ah-Kwee-Lah, Ah-Kee-Lah, Ah-Kwi-Lah are all variants I've heard ;) All-over Nuln Oil is a great place to start with adding depth and definition. Soon Agrax Earthshade will join the club, and before you know it, you're hardly using those anymore cause you're layering everything up from dark to light xD It's a journey we all must take. Okay, the highlighting is where this kinda blew me away haha. For a very first mini, this has no business looking that good xD Honestly, that is an amazing looking Kriegsman, ready and proud to die for the Emperor! Looking forward to seeing where this hobbying journey takes you!

More painting videos, definitely! I appreciate if you feel like you don’t have much to offer the viewers as a beginner, but that’s the best bit! I’ve loved seeing your journey into the hobby so far and I guarantee there plenty of people that want to continue seeing your journey going forward. Reading the comments, it looks like you’ve already inspired others to pick up a brush and that’s great! You done great for your first time! Well done! 👏🏻 Only tips: To keep your brushes in shape for longer, try to keep the paint on the bottom half of the bristles. You don’t want paint getting into the ferrule (metal part). If you do, give it a thorough rinse and clean straight away. It’s also good to keep rinsing your brush every minute whilst painting. As for thinning your paints. There’s nothing wrong with how thin your paints were. There’s also no right or wrong way to thin paints. Thinner paints will stop you blocking up all the details but will take an extra coat or two. Thicker paints are also great for freehand work or smaller details that are harder to apply multiple coats. The more you paint, the more experienced you’ll be and you will understand how thick or thin you want your paints. ❤
@ti8ick
@ti8ick 8 ай бұрын
Thank you! I tried a bit of freehanding yesterday drawing a camouflage pattern and was wondering if it's ok that my layer was thicker than usual, but it makes total sense since you apply it in only a single layer. And I reeeeeally need to work on not dipping my brushes ferrule-deep into paint 🤣

I would use the flat side of the clipper towards the mini makes an easy and cleaner clip also your files are cute but a narrower one will much easier to control the filling width. Dont thin your paint to the point where the water starts to separate it it will make the layer too thin and runny thus requiring more paint for a neat cover. I have a set of brushes for metal and a set for normal paint with a coloured tape around one set to remember which is which. Shading is more for shadowy points so if I were you I would find a shading video. Im so glad you really got so well into it and you enjoyed it so much best of lucky with it. It went so well good job. This is an unreasonably good first model!! Seriously, very well done, it's really impressive!! Watching you paint, it was impressive to see how you managed some of techniques, especially the edge highlighting (something that loads of people struggle to get done cleanly even after painting for a long time). I'll confess, I've never seen the "pinky support technique" before, so maybe you should consider trademarking so you can get the credit when everyone is doing it! I think very few people would be able to say their first model was anywhere near as good as that, and I think most people would be rather surprised you hadn't been painting for some time if you showed that to them. It certainly wouldn't look at all out of place in a well painted Death Corps army. At no point during the video did I think "she's doing that wrong" ... well okay... perhaps spraying in the wind wasn't ideal :D but it all worked out fine in the end! Don't worry that you had to tidy mistakes up, its something everyone ends up doing. The only disadvantage you have now, is you are going to have to get soooo good to see the massive difference most of us can see between our first and latest model ;) Amazing work, and great video. Hopefully it will encourage people who are a bit worried about painting to give it a go! Very well done!! You did the Emperor proud!

Great mini! I know people that have been painting for a decade that can't get that good of a result! All those things you said about the mini not being so small in your hands, and the world not being so there, that's one of the reasons so many of us love the hobby! Again, wonderful, for anyone, but for a first min, that's outstanding! Noticed a few things that might help make things a little easier for your next few though, so my tips! Decal softener you put on the top of the decal after putting it on the model. It melts the edges away so you don't see the transfer carrier (the clear edge that you can just bairly see around the markings). That's why it melted your decal, that's what it does :) For paint thining, you did just fine! If anything you could thin it a bit more, your whole drop on the pallet. Work it around as you're using it to keep it consistent. When you're edge highlighting, it helps a bit to keep the brush or your paint a little wetter, not terribly so, just you want your paint to flow easily. I find it helps to pull down and towards myself when trying to paint a straight line can help. You're right about your pinky finger! An anchor helps a lot too when highlighting, another trick to anchor is to press you wrists together, but that can get cramped. Elbow braced on your desk can steady hands from shaking as well. Try to keep paint only on the first like %20-40 of the brush. The more that gets up into the metal part the faster it will wear out and start to fan out.

For a first miniature, you did an excellent job. Nice thin coats, and great brush control. Over time things will become easier and improve, especially if you experiment with more advanced techniques in the future, and find what works for you. A few pointers I would make: Take some extra time cleaning the miniature of mold lines, and areas that were clipped, and not sure if you did it off screen, but change the water after using metallics and going back to regular paint. For the decals, it doesn't take long for them to loosen, and good to have a pair of tweezers to hold the card next to where to want to afix the decal, and use the brush to slide it into place. Also don't be afraid to mix colours if you need to, and remember to paint them however you want to. They do not have to follow a specific scheme, and always better to make them your own, and paint them in your own style.

One thing that I found, when you were talking about how difficult the eyes were, I had similar trouble getting the eyes for my Chaos Marines. I actually found that since those were so small and narrow, to put the paint in and not worry about it getting elsewhere near the eye, like if it got onto the brow or head or other part of the face. Given how small the eyes were, I found it easier just to kind of be messy around those and make sure you got them all painted, and then touch up the areas around the eyes afterwards.

Yes! It's better to apply more paint and fix the areas around than not apply enough! Thank you!

Absolutely Incredible result!! Learning to experiment and having the attitude of 'it may not be accurate, but it's what *I* want to do' is an awesome perspective to have within the hobby and makes it so much more fun! The right way is the way that makes YOU happy! Like the Krieg video, Duncan Rhodes has one about painting faces at three different difficulty levels and they're a fantastic guide for easy, effective faces. The intermediate level (which looking at this model you're more than capable of!) is only 3 colours and has a result that constantly gets me compliments when people see it on the tabletop!

Well, congratulation. The sole thing I would say is : keep it dearly, it's the first you did and lots of memories are attached to it, and I'm absolutely sure you'll be pleased to find it in ten years and to remember this time of your life. It's a memento and it's precious ^^ I wish I could keep my first model kit but, well, life...

Your first mini will never be good when you compare it to everything you paint later but it’s still a wonderful experience, even if it looks like complete trash you still did that. You put it together, you painted it, it’s uniquely yours and no one can take that away from you. My first miniature was a necron warrior and he was literally just three colors. My next mini was a thousand sons rubric marine and he was faaaaaaaaaar and away superior to that warrior because I learned how to use washes, highlights and painted the base. It’s a constant learning experience.

Some tips I wish I would have learned earlier: Wet palet is very simple method to make and eases things tremendously. 2 cups of water: One of normal paints and one for metallic. Then you don't have to change water every time you you use metallic paints. (Minimises metallic transfer into another paints) and a dedicated brush for metallic. Thus you can simply focus painting your miniature and don't need to worry about corrupting your washes or paints accidentally with metallic flakes. And its better paint too thinly than too thickly. You can always add layers.
@ti8ick
@ti8ick 8 ай бұрын
Yes! All of this! Especially the tips for metallic paints. I also didn't use it on my wet pallet to prevent the sponge from absorbing the metallic flakes. Not sure if it's necessary, but just in case lol

I only started painting in January this year though. Already better now than six months ago. Just keep painting and you'll be amazed at what you can do. Welcome to the greatest hobby in the world.

You'll blow everyone away with how amazing your army will be painted. You'll find a majority do the "battle-ready" paint job. You did "Parade-ready" and it'd put other armies to shame. Great job!

Congratulations on the mini/Hans and the video itself! It's really engaging; fun and good to follow. You've learned a lot from both processes and so could others! A good example is how you noticed the knee's mould line while watching footage back. I've seen some pretty accomplished mini painters talk about this sort of thing happen to them, so you're in good company! This is a bit like how some musicians level up once they've heard themselves in the studio. :) Grey primer was another great early choice under these colours, and if you feel that way too, it may be wise to find a pot of the same colour (as whichever primer you end up using often) so you can scrape any mould lines you spot and cover up if need be. That said, you're going beyond just learning every process, and learning lots already. Remember, most gear used by any Guard regiment is mass produced, and a lot of it might have seams - like the back of the boots - or mould lines that can be where they are on the mini, so there's more reason to live with some of those hehe. Ahh, I should've made some notes, to do your video justice, tibs 😅 If you watch more videos, you might notice certain painters have a meta of sorts about which shades to use over certain colours, and/or parts. Even so, exceptions can be made! An obvious alternative is to try Agrax Earthshade on some or even all parts of a soldier like this. That'd give a trench mud vibe, and the studio even uses brown shade on stuff like Space Wolves armour, but again, you don't have to go for obvious ideas every time. :) Nuln Oil worked well here as unifying shade and grime, and your application looked really intuitive! Speaking of grime, if you want to get into that, maybe try Ratling Grime from Citadel, sometime haha. If you find that shades leave surfaces like cloth too shiny, you can experiment with matte varnishes too... Good uhhh point 😉 about the fine highlights, though I really like the broad ones you painted on places like the knees too! It's cool to see how your makeup skills work here, and I can imagine different aspects of that will serve you well when painting faces. I generally don't go on about things being underrated etc, but Skavenblight Dinge seems like a paint that's easy to overlook, yet so versatile! As for paint thinning, it'd be slightly easier to be sure if everyyyy move was showed but that might slow the video down, so no worries really. The only one I'd try slightly thinner in future is the gold on those tiny skulls, but of course it can be handy to experiment, thinning paints to a wash consistency for faces etc when you're ready! Great job with the transfer too! Of course white won't stand out so much over metallic grey, but it's realistic. Realism and visibility are factors you'll probably ponder on any projects... 😌 Anyway, I could go on but that's probably heaps for now! Congratulations again, tibs!

You did so GOOD! This was a delight to watch, I love watching peoples fist steps into the hobby. For a first miniature you are leaps and bounds ahead of most people and your paint scheme looked really nice as well. Also the "radio" is part of the gas mask filter. If you wanted to try some advanced painting techniques; the gun he has is a plasma pistol and there are some really cool techniques to make the ridges on the top look like they are glowing with heat (which they do in lore), but getting the effect to looks right can be quite difficult.

You did a great job on your first mini :) you can be proud! About the decal softener. This stuff is a mild acid, that desolves the decal. it is used to meld it sligthly to adhere to round surfaces, like space marine shoulderpads for example. If you have a ridget decal, that bends and folds at the edges of the shoulerpad, just apply the decal softener and let it dry. the decal sould then curve properly around the shoulderpad. but it is NOT to remove the decal from the paper sheet in the first place, as you have figured out pritty quickly ^^.
