Whatever that hurts. What a song! I grew up with Tiamat's albums. I love them all. Even their "Sisters of Mercy" period. Johan we need new music from Tiamat, please do something!
@pietrayday99153 жыл бұрын
So glad to see someone else loving the "Sisters of Mercy" period Tiamat! If you haven't already tried the album and handful of singles that Johan did under the name Lucyfire, check them out - they're like a treasure trove of long-lost "Sisters of Mercy" period Tiamat songs, recorded around about the same time as 'Skeleton Skeletron' and 'Prey'... among the Lucyfire discography, you get such oddities as what is basically a Tiamat cover of ZZ Top's "Sharp Dressed Man" (and somehow, it really works!), a couple alternate versions of songs that Johan later released as Tiamat songs, a bunch of stuff that just skirts the edge of darkwave and retro '80s New Wave, and even some songs that wouldn't have been far out of place on 'Wildhoney' or 'A Deeper Kind of Slumber' (see "As Pure as SIN").... I really enjoyed everything Tiamat did from 'The Astral Sleep' onward... their Treblinka songs didn't do a lot for me, even as a fan of early death and black metal demos, but as soon at Tiamat started dabbling in some of those more atmospheric elements on 'The Astral Sleep' like keyboards, acoustic guitars, whispered poetry, and that sort of thing, they really started to shine. 'The Astral Sleep', 'Clouds', 'Wildhoney', and 'A Deeper Kind of Slumber' will probably go down as Tiamat's golden era, as just the right "sweet spot" between their older, more aggressive material and their more experimental side, and I'll always have a special place in my music collection for those albums, but I think anyone who abandoned them as they shifted more and more into gothic rock territory really missed out on some excellent, underrated, and often quite heavy and aggressive Tiamat material (I really don't think there was a big change between 'A Deeper Kind of Slumber' and Tiamat's later albums, certainly not so big a change as there was between 'Clouds' and 'Wildhoney', or between their Treblinka material and 'The Astral Sleep'! Tiamat just got a little more consistent, focused, and polished, and a bit less experimental and spontaneous through their later years....) And, Tiamat fans who've never given Cemetary a try might want to check out that other Swedish gothic-doom outfit: the two bands seem to have been doing almost the same thing at almost the same time: Cemetary's 'An Evil Shade of Grey' sounds like a companion piece to 'The Astral Sleep', while Cemetary's 'Godless Beauty' follows nicely onto 'Clouds'... after trailing just behind Tiamat on those two albums, Cemetary seemed to skip Tiamat's psychedelic period, and dove directly into a sort of death-and-roll Sisters of Mercy thing before Tiamat did, before burning out, releasing a couple odd trance/trip-hop albums before fading into obscurity, while Tiamat kept going for a few years recording some more or less aggressive gothic rock albums of their own. I seem to recall that a couple of the guys from Cemetary would join Tiamat over the years, too... in any event, I think the first two, maybe three Cemetary albums would really go over well with fans of Tiamat's first three albums! EDIT: To my ear, Cemetary came off like a slightly less adventurous Tiamat... if that appeals to anyone out there (and it's not necessarily a bad thing - it doesn't sound bad in Cemetary's case!), there's also Expulsion, which was basically the band formed by the rest of Tiamat after Johan turned Tiamat into basically a solo act around the 'Wildhoney'/'Deeper Kind of Slumber' era: Expulsion picked up at just about where 'Clouds' left off, minus much of the gothic influence that apparently appealed more to Johan, to produce something of a more conservative, less experimental death metal version of Tiamat. I rather like Tiamat's adventurous side, and don't listen to Expulsion very much, but it's alright for what it is, and I think the Tiamat fans who thought 'Clouds' was getting just a bit too weird and experimental might find Expulsion to be just what the doctor ordered as a follow-up to that album.
