Essays allow a university to holistically consider a student. Your transcript is not the most accurate data point in assessing a students strengths. Students may sometimes struggle in high school or undergrad because of a variety of issues and do extremely well in the program they are admitted to. Your gpa is just one data point and it’s incredibly problematic to not consider other data points when considering a student for acceptance.

Just got in and I am by far not the most competitive person at my school stats wise (I didn't take an advanced english for 2 years of HS) but I think what made a difference was selling yourself as a fit for northwestern and being very specific with how you place yourself on their campus!

while essays can be fabricated as you said, ultimately it is the deciding factor because if everything else passes the test then what is left is someones plan and dedication towards NW

Think about it this way, you want your doctor to be smart and know what he is doing, however, his bedside manner is also very important. You are in college to learn, and part of this is learning from each other. Being around a bunch of straight a students with no personality would be horrible.
