Amazing painting! And it is absolutely unbelievable how much better it looks in the photo then on the video. The colors are so much more true and intense. Thank you for sharing this beautiful beautiful painting with us.

i like the softness of the pastel and the detail of the pencil. the pastel makes quicker work of the background and the first layers of the flowers. i am going to give this combo a try! lovely work as always.

Thank you! Yes those pastels speed up the coloring process so much! Usually this kind of drawing would take me much much longer time to complete. I don't remember when was the last time I completed whole painting just under 7 hours :)

What brand if pastell pencils did you use? Pitäisi ostaa lisää ...
6 жыл бұрын

Thank you! Those work much better in that Pastelmat paper than my Cretacolor pastel pencils. I'm so disappointed on those. But I'm so glad you gave me that advice earlier in Lachris facebook group, that I shouldn't try this Pastelmat paper with powder blender. I'm so surprised how different this paper is comparing to Fisher 400 sanded paper that I bought. That Pastelmat paper is really weird paper.

Your work is absolutely stunning and it was so fun to watch you work. The creation of your flower using pastels is beautiful. Back to practicing.

I'm glad you liked it. :) Pan pastels are really good for backgrounds and if you want to tone your paper. I believe You will like that combination. I used here Pastelmat paper and that feels a bit weird with colored pencils (the color layers doesn't blend to each others as well as they do in normal watercolor paper) but I think Sanded papers like UART or Fisher 400 would work even better when combining pastels and colored pencils. Although I have done some background coloring also in normal hot pressed watercolor papers etc. For example in this video I did bace coloring with Pan pastels and colored pencils on top of that kzbin.info/www/bejne/fHq0mYZqq951r9Em33s

What kind of paper do you use to keep from smudging while you pencil in and also did you sketch out your drawing with pencil on plain pastelmat or did you put a layer of pan pastel down first? Thank you for your answers- you are amazing!!!
5 жыл бұрын
Do you mean that paper under my had? That is glassine paper. Those come with the Pastelmat pads (separating two Pastelmat sheets) Also you can buy those separately. Glassine is archive protective paper you use storaging art. I don't remember how I sketched this picture (so many years since I did this) but I think I may have used just white pencil with really light hand. I either sketch like that or I use transfer paper to get the line drawing in.

Brilliant picture Anne. How do you fix your pastel paintings when you have finished them?
@staceywilder68288 жыл бұрын
Beautiful! I just got panpastels for Christmas, so I'm looking forward to learn how to work with them. What type of brush did you use with the panpastels? When would you use one? I hadn't thought about using a brush. Your KZbin was wonderful to watch and learn from! Thank you for posting.
8 жыл бұрын
Stacey Wilder thank you! I'm glad it was helpful ☺ I used couple of different brushes that are really soft like makeup brushes. Different sizes for different purposes. Mostly I used mob brushes (hope that is the correct name in English) for just to get rid of the lines, for softening and blending. But I wouldn't try to paint whole picture using brushes. It throwers too much of the pastel away. Those Pan pastel sponges etc. are the best way for painting with these, but if you are having unwanted lines, you can try to soften those with some soft brush

beautiful painting, did you need to spray the panpastels before using the coloured pencils over the panpastels
7 жыл бұрын
Thank you! :) At first I didn't spray fixative before using colored pencil. If I remember right I didn't use fixative before I started coloring that Dragonfly, but did add some fixative before those flowers. But there is not that big of a difference there. I usually don't like to use fixative with pastels, because it dulls the colors so much.
@susanstenning97768 жыл бұрын
Absolutely wonderful painting. Do you use a fixative after the pastels before adding the detail and depth with the pencils?
8 жыл бұрын
Susan Stenning thank you! No I did not use fixative. This Pastelmat paper holds the pastel very well so there was no need for that. Also I didn't want to dull my colors, and the fixative I have tends to dull those colors a bit.
@juliemcd4448 жыл бұрын
Watched this at quarter speed. Most enjoyable. Even what the music sounded like made for a lot of tension in waiting for the beautiful outcome. Fantastic! BTW; leaving the flowers just a titch more out of focus makes that damselfly LEAP out of the painting. Supreme!
8 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I really love that music Dexter Britain produces. :) I'm glad you liked that soft out off focus effect. I'm just learning to do that. It's so much easier do with pastels than just plain colored pencils that I usually use.
@phyllisreal76267 жыл бұрын
I see you are u sing a brush at times...are you using alcohol with that to blend better or is that a dry brush? I have seen some use the alcohol but not on pan pastels..this is a great piece
7 жыл бұрын
No there is nothing on that brush. It's just basic dry makeup brush that I use for softening the edges. But be careful when doing that with pastels and ware breathing mask. I got really bad breathing problems after one pastel work and it was because of the dust I had dusted on air. So I don't recommend using that method unless you have well ventilated room that is sucking that dust away or you are wearing breathing mask. Unfortunately that dust is really harmful for your lungs if breathed. Using alcohol or other liquids with pastels, wouldn't help you get softer look but rather makes the pastel to act like paint and you can do details, sharp edges etc, if you mix pastel with some liquid like alcohol. But I've never tested that. I have just seen when Jason Morgan uses that method.
@phyllisreal76267 жыл бұрын
Thank you...very helpful. I got a few pan pastels to try and I sure love the softness...I did a pelican on seude and turned out pretty good but did add details with pastel pencils. Its amazing...I am addicted..hopeing to be able to order a large set.
7 жыл бұрын
I bought first the 20 set of pure colors and that I found to be really good for beginning. You can mix almost every color from those and slowly buy more as you go. Pan pastels are so fun aren't they :) I just got few papers that are suede papers I think but I haven't tried them yet. What did you like about that paper and have you tried Pastelmat paper yet? That is the paper I usually use and really like, but I'm interested to see how different this other paper is
@phyllisreal76267 жыл бұрын
I saw a demo on youtub of a lady that did a tiger from her own photo..I do a lot of animals. Have not conquered the florals yets...but will...it was fabulous. She said she used suede mat board....its hard to find. I managed to find it at what I thought was a good price. 5.25 or so for a 16 x 20 which can be cut in 8 x 10 if you like...but its a 50.00 requirement...which was fine...I got 10 amazing colors and did a beautiful pelican...now working on a lion..only thing was shipping is 30.00 and I wondered why..took 2 weeks and it had papers on it for customs,,,looks like the company is in california but it comes from over seas. I have pastelmat....velour...Uart...on a mission to try different papers and different colors for effects..just having fun with it. I will go back and check email and see where I ordered it from if you like...I will search for you under fineartanne on facebook and see more of your work

All the sharp details are made with cp. If you check the description of this video, there is time stamps where I start using cp
