I went to graduate school at MIT in the USA to study engineering. Quite a high percentage of fellow graduate students were from India. I asked them (perhaps patronizingly) if they were the very best students in India. One of them replied (and I still wonder if they were joking with me) that they came to MIT because they had failed to get into IIT.

@mayank jain reservation at the worst may block a portion of govt jobs, but if the system actually encouraged people they might find employment in the private sector too you know. Interesting you say this... true but it’s also not that bad. Having studied in the UK and seeing where firms are investing their money in, they’re leaving the UK (almost all the engineering firms have moved their R&D to Europe and Asia), and they’re building campuses in India. In time, we’ll be near the top hopefully

I understand it's a cultural thing but the purpose of your life is not to please others. It's your life. Your happiness shouldn't rest on what your father thinks of you because he shouldn't be disowning you for something so trivial in the first place. Find something you like and get good at it, whether it's through formal education or not. Prove yourself to YOURSELF, not anyone else. The best advice I ever got was 'make sure to give 100% in those things you can control and don't stress about those you can't because they're beyond your control anyway'. If you studied and gave your best then you've already done your duty. Test scores aren't always a good indicator of how much we know and definitely not a good indicator of what we're capable of!

Don't ever let your self worth be governed by your parents or anyone. If he has practically disowned you, he has a) failed as a father 2) failed as a human being c) failed to understand that his son isn't a fucking carbon copy of his own ego. He should love you as a son, not a bloody trophy to show off to his mates. Go live your life man, find your own path and disown him if he feels that way.

I agree with all of the professors . The exam is not very appropriate for selecting students for engineering and science programs. But the population of India is so high that there is no other way. If you look at old IITJEE papers that used to be subjective then you might find them more appropriate but at that time the number of students giving that exam was very less. Also JEE is only to differentiate hard working students who can withstand the immense pressure of not only its exam but also its preparation , from others

That seems to be exactly the reason for what this exam is. It may be inappropriate as a selection tool for future researchers--and I agree with this view--but what other way can you devise to select from a huge population of people the few to fill the limited number of seats at the university? Making the exam extremely difficult seems to be the only solution. But IITs are very flexible in their curriculum. You can get to learn different courses like Humanities or other branch courses easily.( T&C applied). The exposure and competitive environment you'll get here is unmatched. It will bring out the best from you. The brand and alumni network is very strong. So you will always have valuable guidance from alumnis in terms of career choices.

I am from IIT and I think the analysis is spot on, especially by the old math professor with the moustach (I wish I knew his name). JEE exam pattern is biased towards students who are "smart", have access to exam training and perform well under pressure, and not necessarily those who have high scientific creativity or aptitude. This is very much evident by the fact that IIT's produce very little quality research ( IISC's fare a lot better here), but it produces a lot of good business leaders and entrepreneurs.

Some of them on high level of food chain are arrogant. They will only consider this type of false meritocracy. Even at the Masters level when you give GATE and get good rank , when you go for interviews they will select a candidate from their state. Not to offend anyone but entrance exam (all which I attented) is mainly focused on how much you can memories. Not entrance but all exam so far I've attended (including school to uni(live)). . But the thing that amaze me is that the authority never cares. Don't revise until it's been "extremely" outdated. (I can't talk more, detaling why since politics is involved.) But if you are luckey enough to have a sufficient memory you can get to the toppest without skill, just some basic logic is required though.

Being forced to work at speed does not suit everyone. There must be many candidates who would have made superb engineers who would suffer from this pressure. But I suppose if you have a huge population and few university places, you have to filter drastically.

Its not a lack of universities, in fact India has abundance of those. Its lack of reputable universities that has created such a void. Also, no matter which university you ultimately enroll( apart from premiere institutes like NIT, ISI etc), the IITJEE is the gold standard for selection. Another aspect of IITJEE that makes it tough as hell is that is requires clarity in the particular subject. It tests your understanding of the concepts. Most people never grasp this, and end up thinking that they have to solve and workout the solution. In reality all of the math questions and a lot of phy and chem questions can be solved just by looking at them. There can only be 1 probable solution in most cases. When you grasp this, you realize its not such a race against time. But most of us realize this after we miss our window of oppurtunity

I was part of this bullshit .. I never wanted to be a scientist or engineer and there are millions like me .. Now everyone thinks we are a big failure .. But I want to say to my fellow mates that work hard on that thing which your hearts say or even better do what is needed .. And if you ever become parents please don't let your child suffer from your desire .. Give him freedom .. Give him wings ..don't try to cage him ..
