lesselp there's an equation which could probably be used. m=√n Summarized, Price's law says the number of competent people in a company is the square root of the population of the company. So √1=1 but √10000=100. Notice that as a company's growth may be exponential, the competent people will have logarithmic growth. We can just say m=number of quality comments and n=comments
@jackmudie56395 жыл бұрын
@@m35926 And from that the average net quality of the comments could be described by sqrt(n) / n
@burzummmmm4 жыл бұрын
@lesselp No, since we do not know the function f(x = sub count) = the average quality of the comments, we also do not know the extremum points. So the function may still be increasing. Maybe the extremum point is f(500000), and the average quality of a comment will start decreasing after Tibees hits 500k. We cannot tell unless we know the function. Unless you want to look at the older videos' comments and compare to the new ones.

Physics is fundamentally an experimental science dealing with the material world. Math is much more of a free-for-all: one can just invent mathematical entities and work out the consequences. I came into university wanting to learn everything about physics. Now, at the end of my first, my perspective has changed. Physics has become less and less interesting to me, while mathematics has grown of me immensely. Within physics, really the only aspects I enjoyed were special relativity and Fermi problems. I think this is due to the underlying beauty behind the construction of the reasoning within these systems. Especially SR, the reasoning and beauty behind the model is incredible. This has led to my physics grades dropping exponentially (to the point where I am legitimately worried about passing this semester of physics). I really think I may seriously consider a proper mathematics major, instead of just doing mathematics to aid my physics study. Does anyone have any thoughts?

I would dispute the part about the math major being better for a theoretical physics path. It would be immensely useful indeed, but a math major at least as I have encountered it is very rigorous and abstract which theoretical physics isn't all that much by comparison. This is more so true for subjects like high energy theoretical physics or theoretical particle physics that can be very physics-heavy in their own right. I believe that for someone interested in advanced theoretical fields of physics should instead complete a physics major first, perhaps with a math minor or just extra math courses and then pursue their graduate studies in either physics or math departments that offer their relevant theoretical fields. There are also some "mathematically flimsy" things in physics that are quite standard even in top-notch theoretical domains, but would have mathematicians pulling their hair out. Feynman path integrals come to mind.

It helps to know that someone with interest and ability can learn what they can and be satisfied with the knowledge. It seems to be how discoveries are made. If you have a motivation, "just to know", the other alternative that is ever-popular is to suspend the formal education and "steer your own boat", ..because at some stage we hit a wall of ignorance mostly of our own construction, (eg testing an hypothesis that turns out wrong), you can't really "unknow" information in the Quantum world, only restart along another path, if you have time. It's not the fault of the University that they couldn't provide the answers I wanted, their job is to provide thinking tools, and then if you are successful with applying them, leave you to your fate, unless you go back into Academia. "Life is what happens while you are making plans", but KZbin is an interesting development, if you can ignore the other wall of ignorance built by Trolls, they provide practice in how to apply constructive ignorance-cancellation techniques. Otherwise, even if you only get a fraction of the intended knowledge accumulation in the lectures provided, the "learning by doing, watching and Teaching", is the core cultural activity of information transfer and conduction, ..parent generations to children, that determines a personal level of Human development. It's all sense-derived Perception. But the tools and techniques you require are, a personal Philosophy first, (a good idea is a good idea, no matter where it comes from. Age and Era are contextual, the most interesting part of Teaching and Learning), an ability to discriminate between ideas and concepts, (requires great patience), and willingness to confront the hardest part, of taking responsibility for what you think. Ie learn to represent yourself, in totality. Being a general Scientist follows naturally. You have no reason to follow this particular accumulation of observations, it's a very messy thing to do if you already know what you are doing. And you "probably don't have time" to make big decisions. That's another job the Uni does sometimes. (?)

Not much since Electrical engineers do not go beyond the first 2 Newtonian physics courses, mechanics and electricity & magnetism, and those 2 courses are considered "beginner" level since physics majors take intermediate level physics courses for both the "beginner" courses after their freshman year or so depending on the university. E. Engineers need to have a very basic background on E & M since ~95% is just the engineering side...you can take other physics courses like intro to astrophysics and others like algebra based mechanics as a E. Engineer major, but not those intermediate+ courses unless you are double majoring or minoring which also doesn't go through the hell that physics majors go through.

Lovely video, Ms. Tibees! Aside from the topic of math/physics, however, I have an oblique point to share. The cadence, close calls from total silence, word choice, that sort of thing - your "real and not apparent" train of thought, so to speak, is available information for a discerning viewer. As a fellow content-creating artist, I know how when you create these things, and start these projects, so much of what goes into it never gets reflected back from the audience's reactions. How much is appreciated, how much is missed? I'd rather have remained in the woodworks; I thought you'd welcome the rare candor, in the end. I know I'm being vague, but I want to avoid saying more, for obvious reasons, if what I'm saying eventually clears itself up. But yeah, all the best with everything! There is a rather significant fundamental difference though: physics studies real world and mathematics is an absolutely precise abstraction. Depends where you live. At my university, degrees are a lot more flexible. If you want, you can do a bunch of physics courses during your math degree.

I'm a high school student planning on going into college for a dual major in Physics and Computer science, with a minor in Mathematics. Would you see this as a good path for somebody who intends to carry on to a PhD and work in a theoretical area? Alternatively, do you see a dual major in Physics and Mathematics and a minor in Comp Sci as better? EDIT: Sorry, watched further along in your video and saw essentially your take on it. Thanks!

It all depends and comes down to how you view the world and what your interests are. Is it limited to a physical system or world or are there n elements that don't apply to the real world. It all goes back to the schism between platonic or aristotliean worldview.

So hard to get good grades if majoring in Physics…

OK, so what do you think of Sabine Hossenfelder? Do you agree that without at least the faint hope of empirical validation, mathematical physics is just extremely expensive hand waving?

The thing I like most about math & physics is that they are part of the EXACT nature of our universe. They are absent of opinions. The closest they come to opinions is new theories and even then they are not classified as facts until they are proven without a scientific doubt. Fakers, liars & pretenders have a very short timespan in math & physics and I like this very much. The rules are clear, precise & logical in math & physics and I like this very much; I always know what the rules of the game are.
