By far the best video out there for detailed information on stress fractures. Something I have battled for 6 years now on and off, but never educated myself thoroughly until now. This video goes beyond the surface level videos on shins splints and stress fractures talking about actual ways to differentiate the two besides the old it feels better in the morning is a stress fracture diagnosis. Enough compelling information that I’m going to take the recovery more seriously and probably seek out x-rays again since I haven’t gotten them since my first incident. Unfortunately I think I may fall into the latter category of some that never healed, we’ll see. Thank you and I just wanted to pass my gratitude for a superb video!

I’m a Marine Vet, during boot camp I got 4 SF on my right tib and 3 on my left. I was pushed back into training after 2 months of rehab…lmao needless to say I’ve had shin pain for the past 5 years. I pushed myself ( I don’t even know how) through running consistently each year for my Physical tests as well as my CFT (combat fitness test) which has you sprint 200 meters and pick up a person your weight and running about 50 meters. Needless to say, I finished my first enlistment with pain in my legs all the time. I’m 23 now and can hardly walk. Please, make sure your body is taken care of…this video does a great job of informing you about how to tell and what to look for, but if you think you have SF’s please see a doc and have it checked out. Take the necessary time to heal your body.

I got a tibial Plateau fracture six years ago after a fall. I’m now in a wheelchair, I can’t walk, weight bear, bend my knee (my leg just sticks straight out) and I have foot drop. I was diagnosed with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome because I sprained my ankle and wrist. I was sent to a physio and he told me that I only thought that I couldn’t bend my knee and tried to force my knee to bend over his leg as if he was trying to break a piece of wood. It was agonising, I begged him to stop but he said that he didn’t care and wasn’t bothered. Months later I was sent for a nerve conduction test and it found that I’d got nerve damage and was unable to bend my knee. I’ve been asking if I’ve got shin splints and compartment syndrome for years but no one will listen. I had full leg casts put on and every one was too tight and had to be changed. No one believed that I was in severe pain. I’m in the UK.

I'm pretty sure I have a stress fracture(s) from my new job. Suddenly having to walk on cement floors in a big factory, alone, 32 miles in 4 days, wearing boots is what did it for me. As well as being the most out of shape I've ever been in my life. I recently made some health changes and tried jump roping for weight loss. That didn't end well. Couldn't rope more than a minute without pain. Now I'll have to just do strength training first instead of cardio until this heals up. I'd say it was shin splints, but now it's localized pain. Toddler son doesn't help when he hits my shin, not even hard, with his foot causing sharp stinging pain when I change his diaper. I'm a 236lbs dude. Should be around 180lbs to 190lbs. I secretly bring a scooter to work now to help and now wear my shoes. Hope this goes away soon. It's been about 3 weeks since it all started.

i’ve had bilateral stress fractures before, during my last football season. Then after a long time in PT was clear to practice again, and it still always felt weird. I’ve been practicing all off season and tried track for like a week before i thought it was a bad idea because my legs started hurting too much. And took 2 weeks off my football practice, went back to it for about a month then, went to do 1 on 1’s with a friend and had to run bare foot and am having similar pain now to when i had the fracture. Almost a dull ache right now, (thought it was a good idea to not do much until i can go see my orthopedic in 2 weeks) but i have collapsed arches and when i taped them and hiked up super steep switch backs for a week without taking ibuprofen, i was fine. I tried a quick mile run yesterday and felt like normal, shin pain, but not localized. I don’t think it’s a fracture because i’ve tried pushing as hard as i can in the bones and it doesn’t hurt, occasionally i’ll find a spot that feels bruised but not what they used to be. The pain can jump up to my knee and upper shin, then back down to where the old ones used to be. So i have no clue what the hell is going on.

I would limit exercise to swimming only. If you catch it early it won't persist into a painfully long stress fracture recovery. I am hoping on 8 months of healing from stress fracture.
@AB-yx5rj4 жыл бұрын
Okay, I have to comment on this issue as you might misdiagnose yourself due to this video. I had a quite sever stressfracture in my tibia due to excessive running (I'm a professional athlete). Nevertheless, it took quite a while to get diagnosed right as I didn't had sever punctual pain in my shinbone as stated here. Instead, my knee hurt. It progressed until I felt unable to put force on it (I was still able to run, but felt like I couldn't put power in to the steps). After two MRIs, the first inconclusive from my knee, a sever inflammation of the bone below the patella was diagnosed, aka a stressfracture. A stressfracture doesn't necessarily goes along with the break of the bone but rather describes a degeneration of bone tissue which can lead to a break. So honestly, if you have pain that doesn't go away after 1-2 weeks of rest, please see a doctor and get proper consultant and diagnosis.

Edit: A tibia stressfracture is bad, but not the end of the world. Bones heal, make sure you get a good rehabilitation and listen to your body.

Hi, and I’m so sorry to hear that this happened to you. Thank you for sharing your story. I would also like to clarify that, as I stated in the video itself, the first thing you should do when you suspect this injury is go see an orthopedic doctor. This purpose of this video is to give you an idea of what you might have so you can get it checked out, not serve as a replacement for a medical consult. Also, mine didn’t heal 😬 apparently as much as 70% of anterior tibial stress fractures are non-union (links in description)

What's the right amount of Magnesium and Calcium that is suitable for the condition of Shin Splints and frontal legs pain? And is the product NOW Calcium & Magnesium is safe for me?
@LorenaAbreu4 жыл бұрын
I'm so sorry to hear that :( Shin splints are a soft tissue injury. The calcium supplementation is to assist with bone injuries, like stress fractures. When it comes to stress fractures, vitamin D is also extremely important. I personally take 2 "Caltrate" pills a day (Calcium + Vitamin D) and I also take a joint supplement that has magnesium and hyalauronic acid. Have you gotten recent X Rays? An X Ray or MRI should be able to tell you whether you have stress fractures or only shin splints.
@hishamk65144 жыл бұрын
@@LorenaAbreu Thanks for your wonderful and kind words! Yes, I've taken an X-Ray and they said my bones are ok and healthy. But, with MRI, they diagnose me officially Shin Splints 3 years ago. 11:46. I sustained a tibial stress fracture ( know exactly what day, time and activity) in mid February 2024) I experienced excruciating pain a great deal of the time. Always when I put pressure on it--like walking. It also hurt when I released the pressure. It became more and more painful to the point I needed a walker. It did let up when I rested…but it ached and ached (I used a lot of ice!). But….here is the big problem with it all. I saw 7 doctors over five months complaining about my terrible leg pain…. before one finally ordered an MRI. And lo and behold, I have two!! So, frustrating! He has casted me. I go back on July 22…I fear it is not healed. But hearing this makes me feel less stressed….if it could possibly take 7 months to heal…..but do the five months prior to diagnosis count?

Sorry about that. What's the status?
@MarjBaticАй бұрын
@ when I went back in July, he wanted me to wear the cast for two more me months.. After the next month my back was absolutely killing me, I think because of wearing the cast. I insisted on an MRI a month earlier than had been planned to see if it would be OK to stop wearing the cast. The MRI did show that the fracture was healed. The leg looked good. But, to this day, I still have lower leg pain. Especially in the morning when I get up. It does ease as the day progresses, but it’s still there, even though the MRI says it’s fine. So, I don’t know.

@@obinnaobiekwe4910 Welll that would be lovely, but my back pain is so severe that I cannot run or even be on my feet for more than about 15 minutes. I do think that perhaps using my leg more might be helpful but I can’t get to that point. I have met with my physiatrist and a spine surgeon, and I plan to see the spine surgeon again next week to explore the possibility that this continued leg pain is coming from my back. (And that the extreme leg pain I had prior to discovering the stress fracture was because I had two problems going on simultaneously ) I had a spinal fusion three years ago. It is surmised that either the area above and /or below the fusion is/are degenerating and pressing on things that might be affecting my leg. It’s been 10 months of hell, truly. I’m generally not a complainer, but I will complain to anybody who will listen if they will fix my pain!

Random tips: -If you tear your acl, get that surgery and get it asap. I tore mine before I really got into fitness, and I naturally began to put more weight on my left leg. The longer you wait for surgery, the more time you spend depending on your opposite leg… too much weight bearing might lead to a stress fracture, idk… -Don’t go vegan if you’re a runner lol. I think I got my stress fracture cuz I wasn’t getting enough calcium and or vitamin d and with the extra weight on my left leg, I got a stress fracture two months in! Its an interior stress fracture and god it sucks that even after a year, it’s been on and off pain. Just depends on what I do but high impact brings back the pain.

@@moij5962 That's not what I have. I have muscle hernias of some kind, I think. If I walk regularly, they don't bother me.

Knee airbags in my car hit both my shins. Feels and looks like I took a bat to my shins. Didn't even know what knee airbags were before this. Not sure if it's bone bruise, shin splints, stress fracture, or all of the above. Thoughts on difference between bone bruises and stress fracture? Love your video and vibe. Thanks!

FYI to viewers: Americans who study health sciences and science do use the metric system. I know cm and often use it over inches.

This video was by far the best one I’ve watched and I watched so many! I was trying to figure out why my shin had a knot on it and no other video talked about that. Yea I definitely have a stress fracture so I’m sad and I kinda feel like I’ll just have to live with it cuz it’s been years and I just can’t give up activity for 7 month and start getting fat for it to heal but ima go to the dr. Thx.

In the case of a shin splint, can you see a photo showing swelling around the bone on X-RAY?

This was really helpful and explain those complex conditions in really accessible way! Thank you!! I think I have a stress fracture and the doctors are not really helpful because it didn't show on the initial MRI... Really appreciate your video 😊👌

thank you so much! I'm so glad it could help because I went through the same thing. I know how frustrating it is

It's been two years already and I still don't have a proper diagnosis! Totally frustrated and both legs are so tender reacting to anything and everything now... I'm leaning towards the stress fracture and hopefully the next MRI will prove it and I'll be treated correctly. Thank you once again! If you have any more advice, I'm so open to it!

Dorota K i hope the mri clears things up! There is something that I learned about after making this video: stress reactions. When I just got my latest MRI, my fractures were generally filled up but I still had larger “stress reactions” in both tibias. This is an area of less-dense, damaged bone that can be quite long, and never devolved into an actual crack. So that might be an option as to what you’re feeling too

This was the most informative vid on my shin injuries. Makes so much sense why my stress fractures haven’t been relieved, been playing lots of basketball, not resting much and I’ve been cutting for 4-months 😳🥲

I thought it was shin splints but my bones ache intensely at night and hurt to the touch on one specific area. Noticed a bump on my right shin this evening. ...ugh

Great video! I'm 99% sure I have a tibia stress fracture but unable to see any doctor because to Covid. Happened 2 weeks ago now, the pin point where the fracture is feels less intense achy, I can touch it gently without it hurting as much, however can feel it when I flex my leg (if that makes sense) but still can't walk fully/normally on it yet...hoping it will heal itself with more time off running etc...!

Does caloric deficit need to be avoided if you are already significantly over weight? I have a BMI of 29 have developed a stress fracture from running. I’d REALLY like to keep losing weight with non-impact exercises and low calorie diet!!

2:43 - if I may help, 10cm (the decimeter) is the size of the ancient Egyptian measurement of "one hand", that is, the width of a human hand across all five digits - which is close to 10cm for the average human hand - half this then, is about 5cm. So, if you place your two fingers apart, roughly half the size of your hand in width [you did it great in your video!] then that is about 5cm :) Edit: just for fun, as a Canadian, we grew up with Metric rulers being used in schools - that's how I knew that your finger estimation in the video was pretty close to 5cm just seeing it - way to go! lol And to help other people from the USA; the width of your index finger is about 1cm!
