I completely agree with you on this subject! I am a Jersey girl, born and raised. I, and everyone I knew, were taught proper table manners from a very young age. Then I married a Texas man and moved here with him after his service in the Air Force was done. Now I see a lot of things here that really annoy me, and a lot of it starts with his family. The first party I hosted, for our son's first birthday, had a total of 60 guests invited, most of them his family. The invitations said R.S.V.P. The only people to call me were my friends, and the day before the party I had to call around to his family to see who was coming because I needed to buy food. I was informed by my mother-in-law that I was rude for doing that. Now on to table manners... Nobody puts a napkin in their laps. A good number of them speak with food in their mouths. Eating with fingers is very common. I also hate watching someone trying to saw a piece of meat with a fork, when a knife is provided. Licking fingers and then reaching for more food was another thing that really annoys me, especially when I put utensils with every dish. And my husband is just as bad. I have gotten up from the table and walked away because I cannot stand hearing him eat or watching him take such large bites. I do not invite his family to meals any more because I don't want to put up with it.

I used to let things like that bother me but I realized that life is too short to worry about the little things. I don't usually keep my napkin on my lap because it ends up on the floor. My 96 year old off the boat italian Grandfather, who unfortunately passed away last year God Bless his soul, would ALWAYS hold the napkin up to his neck. Lol. We all, including my Grandmother who passed years ago, put it on our lap, but not Grandpa. He would HOLD IT with one hand AND eat with the other. It was hysterical. However, no matter how dirty his napkin got or how much he wiped his face, IT NEVER WAS laid on the table until he was done with it and he would put it in his plate.

I once knew a guy. No bullshit! We’d go to the local cafe at lunch, on break. Not before, not after. He Would blow his nose in to tissue during eating lunch... THEN... take a good long look in to what he’d blew out. When I kindly asked if he didn’t mind doing it whilst we ate. He looked at me with amazement. Bemused at my request. Day 3. I lost the plot, he got both barrels.. we never spoke again. Nor did we eat in the same building.

ew. I know a dude ( Unmarried at 66 no surprised ) who gets four plates at a buffet and he wonders why women don't want to go out to eat with him. We quit going out with him but back when I did ( make that mistake ) I had to get my food in a to go box or he'd spit all over my food. It was like eating with a human food sprinkler. One of them intermittent jet ones. And a few times he's gone to grab my to go box "to take home to his dogs" uh huh. He will never get married and he's clueless as to why. I didn't grow up in that kind of environment, so I do what I can to act and look somewhat tactful when in said situations. Always ask questions when you're in a setting you're not familiar with so you don't look like an animal!
