If you know the history of the film itself, you would know exactly how right you are. This film was the last one Jackie Gleason made before his health started failing until "Nothing in Common" with Tom Hanks in 1986. It almost became his final legacy. And, it was originally an entirely different movie called "Smokey IS the Bandit" where Gleason played both parts as Buford T. Justice AND The Bandit. All of the scenes with Jerry Reed and Colleen Camp were filmed months AFTER filming wrapped, which is why there is such a disconnect between the scenes, and the weird edits, cuts, and the bizarre overdubs using the same guy who did Gleason's "censorship voice" for TV (I believe at the time they did the ADR looping, he was either too sick, or too embarrassed by what they were doing to come back for the recording sessions himself. Rumor has it, Gleason bought up all the rights to the unused footage of him as the Bandit and destroyed it, vowing to never let the public see any of it. There's an ad still floating around on KZbin showing him talking about it, dressed up like Patton as he did in the film). This film is not only the end of the Bandit Saga, but also kinda the end of the Hal Needham era in Hollywood, and the end of his relationship with Burt Reynolds et al. So it is both a strange monument, and a sad artifact of an entire era and genre of films.
@bcluett16973 жыл бұрын
@@MrPaladino I don't think it's sad. It's one last run, maybe not flat out but there was some real gold in it. I know people that still quote this movie to this day and watch it again from time to time. It doesn't have everything like the other two but it's a fun movie and gave us another stretch of the legs for the Justice family and Snowman. The cameo by Reynold's at the end was a really nice touch that put a solid send off with him driving off into the sunset, never giving up like he tried to do at the start of the movie.
@MrPaladino3 жыл бұрын
@@bcluett1697 I’m with ya, my guy. But unfortunately, legacies don’t quite work that way. Universal, to this day, only bundles the film as part of the “Smokey and the Bandit Pursuit Pack”. And Jackie never got to see the film elevated to cult status. Burt Reynolds denounced the franchise pretty much to his dying day. That aside, the film is still melancholy and a train wreck. It’s a more shockingly enjoyable and watchable train wreck than say, Part 2 (which I still do not truly understand the point of. The Bandit is an asshole for 89 minutes, and suddenly, he likes himself and wins Frog back. THE END. And you’d have to be “commode hanging drunk” to miss the horrendous plot holes you could drive a fleet of trucks through). At least Part 3 made some kind of sense. You could legit follow the plot. But had it been Gleason’s final film? A great talent like that deserves better than a so-so comedy that bombed. And he got it. So we can go back and enjoy his stinkers with... well, glee.

@@TheORIGINALBrentTheGent I think the reason Jerry wasn't on the soundtrack was due to his being hired in after the disastrous preview of"Smokey Is the Bandit".The audiences didn't like Jackie as the bandit so they re-shot with Jerry and the soundtrack was probably already in place.I agree the movie was terrible anyway I'm just glad Jackie got a decent career send off with "Nothing in Common".
@MrPaladino3 жыл бұрын
@@TheORIGINALBrentTheGent Reed was hired AFTER the entire movie was essentially made. His entire involvement is completely removed from the scope of the original film. So it makes sense that they didn't use any of his music, because originally, they had no idea he was ever going to be involved. That's why this film is such a bizarre epitaph on the Bandit franchise. It was originally supposed to be Gleason playing both Sheriff AND the Bandit. And it was filmed. And SCREENED! And the test audience was so bewildered by what they had seen, they shot 50% of an entirely new film to salvage the situation. There's an entire Wikipedia page dedicated to this. That's why I'm always so morbidly attracted to this film. And also why I *KNOW* Hollywood will never take a real risk and just let a bomb be a bomb on its own merits.

Reynolds felt that the Bandit series both broke and ruined his career. The original being a big smash hit, and Smokey II being a dud that made him seem like a jerk. So, depending on the source, he originally refused entirely, or he asked for too much money. Ironically, Universal spent an extra $2Mil on the film to “remake” it with Reed. Had they simply offered that money to Reynolds in the first place, he might’ve agreed.
