Trachyphyllia Open Brain Coral Care Tips - Trachyphyllia are commonly referred to as an Open Brain coral and are one of the most popular large polyp stony corals among beginners and advanced reef hobbyists alike. Trachyphyllia are a show-piece LPS in a mixed reef and can introduce an amazing burst of color to the lower sections of the reef. The rainbow paint splatter varieties in particular can hold their own as a signature show piece item on par with much more expensive corals such as scolymia or Acanthophyllia.

Corals do extract amino acids, nitrate, and phosphate from the water column. In the ocean the amount of these dissolved nutrients are extremely low, yet the coral is feeding constantly on marine snow and inverts swarming at night. Yet in our tanks it is hard to supply this to the full extent, so some nutrients in the water is welcome. Stable KH is crucial, I’ve maintained healthy corals in stable 9-10 dKH while Ca was near 350-360. I had slow growth, but healthy corals. When supplementing Ca too quickly my dKH dropped to around 6-7 in a matter of weeks with Ca shooting to 460. Needless to say some corals didn’t like it, most were fine. I did however get a (cyano/dino?) outbreak. Consistency > target numbers.

How long did it take for your calcium and alk to balance out? You got the cyano/dino from the calcium spike?

@@Messier87_M87 I added these slow dissolve old school calcium blocks called Sea Lab 28s. They certainly accomplished the task of raising the dissolved Ca levels to the detriment of my high Alk. I’ll keep using them, but about every month to maintain acceptable Ca levels. I believe it was the drop in dKH that led to the onset of the algae outbreak.

Have a quick question, how well do these typically do in shipping? The ones i want are large and would have to be shipped but only across the state so im thinkin i should be good but id love our opinion!!! Dont wanna miss these deals but if theyre likely to be damaged in shipping sorta like acans and lobos are then ill pass and see what i can manage to find locally

I have an open brain that was open and fluffy when I got it but after a week or two it wasn't puffy at all and its been like this for several weeks. I feed it twice a week. I believe I might have bleached it some under radions so I moved it under lower light but still hasn't rebounded after several weeks

Wow, this one was the best one you've made ever. Great. Now, I have a small amount of these reddish flatworms, any idea what they are and if they're harmful? Debating on doing a full tank treatment because there will be less toxins released if I do it now since the population is so low

Those flatworms are more of an eye sore than a coral pest, but I try to eliminate them. I am a big fan of whole tank treatments now but you have to be very aggressive about removing the toxins after treatment. Whatever the recommendation is for activated carbon and water changes, be prepared to double it. The toxins are very lethal to your fish.

I've been nursing mine back for years, they truly are slow growing. Mine had an excessively fast die off when I was still new to the hobby and inherited my tank. Consistent hydrogen peroxide treatments to its dead skeleton has allowed it to start growing back onto dead areas but I'll definitely have to try target feeding to see if that helps speed things up!

@@kovidsingh1976 Get a regular test kit syringe, put the hydrogen peroxide in a small container, simply spray underwater the affected area with the syringe. I recommend having blowers turned off so you can let it settle for a couple minutes. Work done!

Boring clams are another big pest of all LPS, the clam leaves a hole under the coral and works it’s way to the front of the coral. Always check inside any holes on the back of LPS, if there’s a shell, break it out of the coral skeleton before it kills the coral

Regarding a bleaching Trachy, I have a hammer who has slowly started to bleach. It’s seeming to bounce back now, but I just wanted to ask if that’s possible? For a hammer to bounce back from bleaching. It looks similar to the bleaching trachy you showed
