I have a plate coral that was practically dead (due to copper in the water). The flesh had pealed off and it looked asif there was only a white skeleton left. After about 1 month of just leaving the "dead" coral in the tank I noticed its mouth starting to open. It has fully recovered since then and is doing great!

These have always been one of my favs...the way the can take large pieces of squid or krill that you can hand feed them, the way they can pass the food from the outside of the disk to the mouth in the center pretty quickly, and the awesome colours they come in, too. The second coral I ever bought (over 15 years ago) was a huge orange plate that I absolutely loved and sat right at the front of my tank.

I absolutely love plate corals, they are my favorite coral. I currently have four and they have been doing great in my bare bottom tank. While doing a water change I did catch some of the flesh of my orange plate coral and it has been slowing dying back and losing flesh ever since. I am hoping that given time it will make a comeback. Super disheartening to see flesh slowly falling off. Also a note on peppermint shrimp. I had a big issue with them picking at the polyps of my plate corals. They left everything else along but loved to eat the plate coral.

@tidalgardens inverse square law is for point like light sources. Our lighting fixtures are definitely NOT point like - they have reflectors that shape light.

I got a green one recently and it looked good for the first few days and then all of the sudden didn’t look good, it doesn’t open up, and I can see some of its skeleton, it hasn’t gotten worse (not too much worse at least) I’ve done an iodine dip, and it seems to be hanging in there, I think the mouth got damaged or something, and I don’t think I can feed it as a result. So I’m just hoping I can revive it, it still has a bit of color under blue which is a good sign, and it hasn’t worsened, but hasn’t gotten better either, so maybe another iodine dip and time to heal with help

Never knew lithophyllon was a "plate" coral. That explains why my 24k litho has barely encrusted over the plug. I have it in a higher light/flow environment. I will definitely be moving it soon.

@@Syed5y since I moved it to a lower light area it has been doing phenomenal. Still a slower grower but so much happier near the sand bed. In 3 years it’s almost covered a 4”x4” rock.

If your plate coral dies, don't remove the skeleton from your tank. In a couple months you should see babies sprout from the skeleton. My original plate coral came in on a piece of live rock. It didn't like its new home and died. I put its skeleton on the sand bed and it sprouted 3 babies. I cut the skeleton around each baby and now have 3 plate corals.

I have found that these plate corals are very fussy and once they start dying, that's it - they're goners. You absolutely can't have sand sifters with plate corals because they will - at some point - spit sand on these corals, and just a few hours of being buried in sand will kill it. Going to leave the skeletons in and see if they sprout buds but I'm not expecting it to happen.

I use 1liter bottles with the bottoms cut out, and place over my plates be for feeding. This keeps everyone Shrimp, Fish from stealing the food till they are done feeding.
