@@MrTieDye Hello! I have been watching your videos here on Vancouver Island. I am using Jacquard Procion MX die, but find that after I rinse with cold, cold water and then switch to hot water the bright colours, like Raspberry, are bleeding into my white. I've tried a cold water salt and vinegar, but it still bleeds when I wash with hot.. My garment looks great after I rinse in cold but then looks terrible once I wash with hot! Any clues or hints for me?

Great technique! I would like to do a fan fold on an apron. Any suggestions? not sure if I should fold the apron so it’s double or do layout on flat fabric. Thank you for all your tips, so helpful.

Question: If you have leftover dye, how long can you store it sealed in the bottle? P.S. Love the use of string to hold the folds, much much better idea than elastic bands.

I am not positive how long, but yes you can save it... I have used dye that sat at room temp for 2-3 weeks and still came out bright .... if you have a fridge, you can store them even longer ..... but if it has been longer than 3 weeks since I mix the dye, I will add another scoop of dye and blend it again just to freshen it up. .... and Yes I love the string as well.... I learned to use it from another artist about 4 years ago

Did you use thickened dye for this one or regular? How do you keep your dyes from bleeding together? They seem so much cleaner than mine. Maybe my shirts have too much water in them still?

I have a tiny bit of thickener in all of my dyes, but not too much as this would stop it from soaking in.... I recommend using just regular dye ..... and if you have too much soda ash left in the tee/dress, I recommend spinning it out in the washer, I like mine to be just slightly damp for folding and for dyeing ...... the other part of keeping dyes from bleeding together is to use colors that mix well next to each other or leave just a little space between colors and let them bleed ... then go back and add a bit more of the lighter color of dye if there is still some white left

Hello, Mr. Tie Dye. I really like your instruction videos. I notice that some artists put “banding” around the item before ice dying. Do you do this and you please tell me why the banding? It looks like foil but thicker, do you know the banding is and where to buy some? Do I really need to band the item? I think I have noticed this on one of your ice dyes but I am not sure if banding is necessary. After many google searches, I can’t seem to find any info about banding tie-dyes. I was hoping you have some info n this.

I use foil around my ice dyes, mainly to keep the ice in place.... It is nice because you can shape it to the tee .... I have also used cardboard .... And I have seen people use base board stuff.... For me, it just allows me to stack more ice

What type of thickener do you use? I got some urea and the label scared me.

I use sodium alginate..... I used to buy from dharma ...... www.dharmatrading.com/chemicals/sodium-alginate-thickener.html .......... basically it is ground up seaweed .... but I recently found this on amazon and will purchase and try this kind soon, it is supposed to be finer so will dissolve easier ...... smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01I26D48I/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=AUWQZWW1DD0PR&psc=1 and then I add Urea and salt to my mix also.... the urea is going to help mix more dye into the thick water and it will help keep the tee damp while the dye sets up ... here is my video on how I mix everything .... kzbin.info/www/bejne/n57EhYuNmbN9itE

I soaked it before and then spun out the excess soda ash in the washer so that it was just damp.... that works great for this type of folding and dyeing

I think they were about 10 inches, but the distance is not critical... I just like to have two to work with when I am doing a large fan fold like this

Why do you have the dress turned inside out?

I have gotten used to turning everything inside out .... a couple reasons ... sometimes not all of the dye dissolves all the way and these tiny specks of dye can leave tiny spots, but if they are on the inside you do not see them ... also I use a pencil on some of my things to draw on the design and it does not always wash all the way out, but once again, if it is on the inside, no one sees it
