This is a tutorial video showing and explaining the entire process of how to use Out White Brite Laundry Whitener to remove part of the color from a black T-shirt in a spiral design. I also show and explain the process used to re-tie and apply dye to the spiral shirt.

Tried this stuff and was SO frustrated! I ended up with a gray pile of shirts, out of about 6 only one had any black in it at all. I was dunking the shirts so they were totally covered but the water and bleaching agent just soaked right through it. I'm thinking I needed to tie MUCH tighter to keep the water out, I had only tied and banded about as tight as I do for ice dye - d'oh! I've got more shirts and more white bright so I'll try again, this was timely - thanks!
@FunEndeavors
@FunEndeavors 3 жыл бұрын
Oh no! I know what you mean. If I'm using either Out White Brite or Rit Color Remover, I tie my shirts with sinew. Otherwise since they get submerged they will end up with almost all the color removed. the Out works so fast that I rarely leave a shirt submerged for more than about 7-8 minutes. I've been trying methods to use the Out White Brite with a spiral and so far this method worked the best. It was only in the Out for a couple of minutes total.
@BLKMGK4
@BLKMGK4 3 жыл бұрын
@@FunEndeavors Yeah, I like the method you used for the spiral. The other shirts looked like they could have ended up like mine except you tied much tighter. I thought I had a handle on it and did a number of shirts all in a batch - nope! I'm not even sure what I'll do with them they look so ugly now. I did have a pile of other shirts that came out well though so that was good!
@FunEndeavors
@FunEndeavors 3 жыл бұрын
@@BLKMGK4 The other shirts turned out good in this batch too. The 2 blue shirts didn't totally discharge though. The one at the very top of the container turned bright orange during the reversal process and the re-dye I was doing that was right below it (it was blue too) looked like it removed the color - but it really didn't. The one that turned orange ended up being a lighter blue shade after it was washed and the re-dye shirt ended up light blue too. I've bought several other colored shirts and I'm going to give them a try to see how well they discharge. I was shocked that the one that turned orange washed back out to blue. If they truly ended up taupe colored, you could always just soak them and tie them like you would a lighter colored shirt. I think the taupe color looks cool in tie dye designs. Just incorporate that color into your color scheme.

@@FunEndeavors I’ll probably try dying them just to not waste them. One is tied in a spiral now and if nothing it’ll be practice. It’s odd how some shirts seem to hold dye better than other when you strip them. The shirts I had were nice soft Jordache shirts too, they didn’t go orange but got kind of gray. I’ll try maybe a split with black or the fun mushroom color I’ve got and see how it does, those are easy and could work with it.

@FunEndeavors 4 ай бұрын
I don't normally work with polyester because it won't bond with the fiber reactive dyes that I use. Bleach is the only product that I am aware of that will work on polyester. You may have to use a higher concentration than 50/50 to get it to lighten the fabric.

Hi Angie, I've gotten back into tie dying shirts for the first time since I was a teenager. Trying out new things and I'm currently waiting on supplies coming from Amazon in order for me to make stencils. I've never used the out white Brite and now I'm strongly considering it. However, I have two questions 1.) In comparison to bleach which do you prefer? 2.) Would I be able to utilize it with a paintbrush / Water pen? I feel as if it would make my stencil work really pop. I'm really enjoying your work and I'm finding it to be quite informative.
@FunEndeavors
@FunEndeavors 3 жыл бұрын
Hi! I really love Out White Brite. It doesn't damage the fabric of the shirt the way that bleach does. I love the versatility of bleach, but it has to be neutralized or it will cause holes in the shirt and continue to damage the fabric over time. I also haven't ever been able to get the shirts very light with bleach - they normally turn a shade of orange (the orange shade is cool though). The Out White Brite and Rit Color Remover will get the shirt much lighter in color (usually a shade of taupe) without the damage to the fabric and without needing to neutralize. All of these products have a pretty strong smell and so I use them outside with a respirator. I'm not sure you could use a paintbrush with Out White Brite though. It really needs to be used with boiling hot water to work properly. You could possibly test it and see if it works if you make it into a paste. However, there is a product called Jacquard deColourant that works really well with stencils. It is a thicker product that comes premixed (about the consistency of pudding). I've used it with a stencil before and painted with it using a paintbrush. To use it you paint/stencil it on your shirt (it goes on clear) and then allow it to dry. It is important to apply a pretty heavy coat of it so that it really gets down inside of the fibers of the shirt. After it is dry, you steam iron it and the color will be removed. If you see that you missed a spot or would like to remove the color from additional areas, you can do touch-ups before you wash it. Afterwards, you can wash it and then tie dye over it if you would like. A word of warning though - it is super stinky! I mean - REALLY STINKY! I always use it outside and wear a respirator for the process. Here is a link to the deColourant that I purchased from Amazon: amzn.to/33ILgxv

Very cool thanks! I'm just starting to dive into the various ways to decorate shirts. Does the Out White Bright need to be neutralized like bleach? Also can I use a small cup of boiling hot OWB solution and a paint brush to paint basic designs onto a shirt like I can do with bleach or does it only work this way? Thanks again :)
@FunEndeavors
@FunEndeavors 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! No, the OWB doesn't need to be neutralized - that's one of the things that I love about it. It also doesn't damage the fabric the way that bleach does either. I haven't ever tried painting a design on the shirt using OWB. There is a product called Jacquard deColourant: amzn.to/33ILgxv that works pretty well for painting designs on a shirt. It is a thicker consistency and can be used straight out of the container to paint on a shirt. After you paint it on the shirt you wait until it dries and then use a steam iron to iron it and remove the color. It works pretty well if you get enough of the product down into the shirt fibers. The main downside to the deColourant is the smell - it is super stinky. I never use it indoors and I definitely don't iron it indoors. I also wear my respirator when using it - yep, it's that bad! Hey, I have a question. I used some Out White Bright on a shirt and it only make the shirt a lighter shade of black. I can still see some of the original color on the shoulder. I used OWB on 4 shirts in a row, the same process, OWB and boiling water, the first 2 came out fine, the last 2 just got a bit lighter. Do you know why that is?
@FunEndeavors
@FunEndeavors Жыл бұрын
Sometimes the dye that the manufacturer used on the shirt doesn't react very well with Out White Brite. I've had that issue with blue shirts before. The blue shirts will lighten a little bit, but for the most part they will remain blue. Also, is your shirt 100% cotton? That can affect how well the OWB works too.
