I've been asked many times what the difference is between using bleach and Out White Brite to reverse dye. So, I thought I would make this video to discuss both methods and show the process and results from each method. There are many ways use can use each product - I am just showing you one of the ways that I use.

You are an EXCELLENT teacher and communicator. I always learn from you. As an aside, I am not crazy about the "orange" color left by the bleach process. To me it's more like a dull, muddy brown.

Good morning! I'm so glad that you are safe - those fires can move really quickly. I think bleach is still one of the most versatile color removers. I've been bleaching some long sleeve colored shirts and then leaving them the bleached color without adding dye on the shirt. I love some of the colors that are formed from bleach. Out White Brite is my go to color remover though if I want to dye the shirt afterwards. The first time I used it I was amazed at how quickly it worked, how light it got the shirt, and that it didn't damage the fabric. I'm excited to see what you think about it when you try it. Have a great day, enjoy your bleach dyeing and stay safe! 🙂

I'm glad you enjoyed it! If you are making 100 shirts, I would do them in batches. I've never made that many at a time, so I have no clue how much it would take for sure. If I were making them, I would do 10 shirts at a time and plan on about 5 bottles of Out White Brite for all the shirts. After you do one batch, you'll get a better feel for how much Out White Brite you like to use.

Well, I figured out how you folded the shirt for the mandala print. By the way, you did an AWESOME job and yes, I’m trying to get my t-shirt to look as fantastic as yours. I tried it 5 times but the pattern isn’t coming out right. It’s showing at the bottom of the t-shirt but it’s not flowing all the way to the top. It disappears in the middle of the shirt. I don’t know if I’m using too much OWB or if I’m not pulling the wax thread tight enough. I can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong. Any suggestions?
@FunEndeavors
@FunEndeavors Жыл бұрын
If you are losing the black line pattern, you are probably not pulling the sinew tight enough. I think it is easier to get a tight sinew line using some kind of sinew puller. It doesn't have to be fancy, anything that you can grip tightly that won't break will work. I have a couple that I use. One of mine is wooden, and the other one is 3D printed. The printed one came from "Boredom With Jenn" on Etsy. I've heard of people using tart tampers and even dog toys though. If the line is tight enough, the OWB won't get underneath it and remove the color there. Mandala folds are really thick and it takes a lot of pulling to get the sinew super tight.

hi there great video! I was hoping to use white brite and white out the center of a black shirt, but essentially leave the outer edges black. Ultimately Im looking for a rectangle ish shape of white in the center of a black shirt that I will be able to block print black ink onto that white brite rectangle. Any tips on folding/tying up shirt to achieve this? Thanks!
@FunEndeavors
@FunEndeavors 4 күн бұрын
That one is going to be tough using Out White Brite. Out White Brite won't get a black shirt white, it normally goes to a taupe color. It also works so quickly that it will be a challenge to not remove too much color. It truly can remove the color in a matter of seconds. For a specific shape on a shirt, you might check out a product called "Jacquard's deColourant." You can paint this product onto the shirt in any shape that you would like. Then to remove the color, you use a steam iron to iron over it. It is super stinky to use (it smells like sulphur or rotten eggs), but you can paint or stencil with it and remove color in small areas. Here's a link to it: amzn.to/33ILgxv I made several shirts using it a few years ago. Here's a link to one of the videos so that you can see how it works. I used it outside and wore my respirator the entire time. kzbin.info/www/bejne/l6uzZ419gdh4m7s I see people on social media put bleach into a spray bottle and spray shirts to make areas without color on shirts to put designs in as well. They leave the shirts outside in the sun to lighten them, and I am amazed how they get the area so light without causing damage to the shirt. The unpleasant part about bleach is that the holes don't always show up in the garment immediately. Bleach weakens the fabric fibers and the holes usually show up after a few washings. I always neutralize the bleach when I use it, but neutralizing won't undo the damage that may have already been caused by the bleach. Another option is that you could always start with a white shirt and add the black dye around your printing. That would probably be the best if you really want a bright white printing area.

What is the wood dowel thing you use for your sinew? I was curious if it was a fancy spool you found or made, or something you repurposed. Bleaching definitely damages material a lot. My ex accidentally spilled bleach on our sheets while carrying stuff to the laundry room at our apartment complex, and within weeks there were holes in the sheets :( So sad.

Thank you! Great instructional video. Have you ever had a problem with the OWB not removing the color? I have a 100% cotton, black dress. I used OWB on it twice. It starts to lighten the fabric to a brown but when I rinse it, it turns a dingy black again. It’s very bizarre. My black T-shirts lighten up immediately. Any advice?
@FunEndeavors
@FunEndeavors 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I personally haven't had that issue, but I know others who have had. I think it has something to do with the way the shirt was dyed the first time, and what type of dye was used. It's a bummer when you want to reverse dye that item, but if you wanted to wear it as is - that would be great because it probably wouldn't fade a lot. It can sometimes be due to coatings on the fabric too. However since you used OWB on the dress twice, any coating would have been gone after the first time. You're right though - it is bizarre!

That helps a lot. 2 questions about the neutralization. I've used bleach and when I neutralized it, it bubbled like mentos in diet coke. How come yours didn't? Say I'm doing 10 shirts, can I use the tub of hydrogen peroxide for all 10 or should I use a fresh batch for each one? Does the process effect the hydrogen peroxide? Thanks for your help.
@FunEndeavors
@FunEndeavors 2 жыл бұрын
The bubbling happens when the bleach meets the hydrogen peroxide. Your hydrogen peroxide solution was probably a bit more concentrated than mine. Either that or I rinsed out a bit more of the bleach from my shirt before putting it in the neutralizing solution. You can neutralize more than 1 shirt at a time - just make sure you have plenty of hydrogen peroxide solution so that all the shirts get well saturated with it. If you are going to neutralize them one at a time and not all at once - I would just make a new batch each time. If you only make up enough hydrogen peroxide solution for one shirt and then use it over and over - it won't still be as effective after a couple of shirts.

@FunEndeavors
@FunEndeavors Жыл бұрын
I have mainly tried it on 100% cotton items. I have used it on the Buffalo hoodies though that are viscose and cotton with polyester on the inside. The inside doesn't normally lighten, so I don't think it works well on polyester. The main thing that I've found is that it doesn't always work on blue items. There is something about the color blue that doesn't work very well with color removers. The color will lighten, but most of the time it won't be totally removed. With the exception of navy - I've had good success with navy. Color removers work with some other blues too, but for the most part I go in expecting the blue to not be totally removed.

I tried a 50/50 cotton/polyester black sweater and I don’t think it did much of anything. I have no idea how you get so much black out of those black Buffalo sweaters

Unfortunately, polyester doesn't work well with color removers. The Buffalo hoodies are mainly viscose and cotton though which does work. I think most of the polyester on the Buffalo hoodies is on the inside in the fuzzy part.

@@FunEndeavors Ah, that makes a lot of sense... I'll have to try something else. It did come out grey-ish but it looks like I lost a fight with a Sharpie because I left it in for over 24 hours...

Say again please the purpose of hydrogen peroxide, mam?
@FunEndeavors
@FunEndeavors Жыл бұрын
It is to neutralize the bleach. Bleach will continue to damage the fabric and you may end up with holes in the fabric unless you neutralize it with a hydrogen peroxide solution of 1 part hydrogen peroxide to 9 parts water.
