@@FunEndeavors Okay, it did t come out. Not even close. Pretty colors, but no white lines. I thought I really cranked down on the sinew! Then I used Daffodil yellow next to orange next to green. I think to orange ate everything. I will take a picture after it dries. It’s a nice shirt, but I’m disappointed! It was a lot of work to tie and even more work to untie.
@FunEndeavors
@FunEndeavors 2 жыл бұрын
@@iknowheis I'm so sorry - I left a comment on your Facebook post, but I'll repost it here as well. To get the white sinew lines it is easier if you tie your shirt damp, and pull the sinew as tight as possible. You will feel it catch on itself and begin to tighten or lock down on the shirt. I keep pulling until I feel like I can't pull it any tighter. If the line ended up being thinner than I wanted it to - I add a few more wraps of sinew on top of the line I just finished and repeat the process. As the shirt dries, it will tighten around the sinew lines. All sinew isn't the same either. I've gotten rolls of sinew in the past that didn't work quite as well. Sometimes they don't have enough wax coating or just aren't as easy to work with. So, if you've followed the steps above or if you are having sinew problems on other designs - it could be the roll of sinew that you are using. It can also be difficult to get the sinew super tight without a sinew puller. For years I just used the spool to tighten the sinew, but when I got my first sinew puller it was a game changer. It was so much easier. A puller doesn't have to be fancy. I've seen people use tart tampers and all kinds of other things. It just needs to be something sturdy that won't break and will fit your hand well. So, a few of the rainbow colors can be overwhelming. In my experience, orange is one of those colors. It seems to want to overtake all the other colors around it. It kind of did the same thing on my shirt. To avoid this, you can either leave out the orange and the red and yellow should mix to form a line of orange, or you can try to add a smaller amount of orange. Yellow can also be a bit tricky when ice dyeing. It doesn't seem to dissolve as well as the other colors. Therefore, I sometimes add a wider line of yellow than the other colors. I didn't on this shirt, but I also don't have a lot of yellow showing. The orange overtook mine too.

@@TheBWWaterfront I just don't understand lol :D In the video she says "i went ahead and let this sit for two days" so theres plenty of time to let the muck pile up. Unless its a heat reactive colour, then i guess it wouldn't bond that well but i just can't comprehend why does it not turn brown :D

@@claycutter Yes, the lines need to be really tight to get the definition. I think it is much easier to get sinew lines tight by using a sinew puller. You don't have to use a fancy one if you don't own one. I've seen people use a variety of things for a puller such as a wooden tart tamper.

@FunEndeavors
@FunEndeavors Жыл бұрын
Hi! Unfortunately, spotting is pretty common with ice dyeing. Some colors seem to be worse than others too. I turn my shirts inside out to try to help with that. It doesn't stop the spotting, but it keeps some of the smaller speckles from showing through on the front side. I have heard some people try laying down a piece of paper towel or some other item to try to avoid it, but I don't know how well that works.

This is so gorgeous. I notice that almost all the dyes you chose for this project are pure colors, meaning they won't split. Did you choose them deliberately for that feature? Should I avoid splitty colors when I try this shirt? Thanks!
@FunEndeavors
@FunEndeavors 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I chose to use some of the traditional rainbow colors that I use when I liquid dye a rainbow. You could definitely use rainbow colors that split though. That would give some added surprises to the shirt. From past experience, I've found that orange is a pretty aggressive color, so I would suggest going a little lighter on the orange. Have fun, and let me know how it goes.

@FunEndeavors
@FunEndeavors 2 жыл бұрын
It is crazy how that happens, isn't it?! I did a single geode tie dye the other day and randomly applied the dye to the top of the ice instead of adding it in stripes to see how the dye would travel on the geode. It followed the lines too.

I have a question. I bought some dresses on sale on Old Navy. They are 55% cotton and 45% rayon. I read where rayon is easy to tear. Do you think I could do a tie like this on this dress. The colors and design would be beautiful. What do you think? Also the dress is lined. Is this too much fabric to do this with?
@FunEndeavors
@FunEndeavors 2 жыл бұрын
You could do this tie with the dress, but don't pull the sinew super tight. I've heard of people actually cutting the fabric into two pieces from pulling sinew really tight on rayon. The lining may not dye (depending on what it is made of), but I don't think the added fabric would be a problem. This would make a really pretty dress.

Beautiful shirt. I never would have imagined it would turn out like that. Why don't shirts soaking in muck look like muck? And if it doesn't look like muck why muck dye? I can't figure this one out yet.
@FunEndeavors
@FunEndeavors 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I leave the shirt alone and don't move it around a lot, so the colors don't really mix and muddy too much. They are darker though. Almost like you put a darkening filter on the shirt. The shirt would be brighter if I would've rack dyed it instead of dyeing it in the muck. Sometimes it is just easier (depending on the odd shape of the fold) to muck dye something rather than try to make an ice barrier and rack dye it. If you muck dye an item, you don't have to continue to add ice either. You add the initial layer and leave it alone. With this shirt, I wanted to see what adding the dye in stripes over the ice would do. I am amazed at how the dye follows the sinew lines and makes lines on the shirt instead of random blotches of color.

Hi, love your work. I am trying to do tie dye around a full time job. Trying to pre prep when I can. Any suggestions? How far in advance can I mix my liquid dyes (Dharma pro powders)? I have SO many questions and I have been watching videos straight for 2 months. lol, not as easy as you make it look. :)
@FunEndeavors
@FunEndeavors 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you - I'm glad you are enjoying the videos! I think it is easier to prep your shirts in advance and mix dye just before you are ready to use it. I normally tie a bunch of shirts all at one time. If a lot of them look similar, I will lay a piece of paper on top of the shirt with a description of what it is so that I don't get them mixed up. It won't hurt your shirts to dry out before you add dye to them. Some designs like this one I always let dry out before I add dye to them anyway. Then you can add dye to them when you have a chance. I try to plan my shirts and scale the dye to mix only the amount that I need for that shirt. I usually have a little bit left over, but I try not to have too much. So, it might work out well to tie your shirts on the weekend and then dye them a few at a time throughout the week. It won't hurt to leave them to process for a few days, and so you can do a large rinse out at the end of the week.

Can you reuse the string you are using to tie the shirts?
@FunEndeavors
@FunEndeavors 2 жыл бұрын
I know that some tie dyers do reuse their sinew. However, I do not. I don't know if there is enough wax coating left to work properly once it has been used.

Probably not the correct post to ask this but have you ever done multi stage dyes? Like ice, liquid then ice again? I have a huge tablecloth I’m going to use for my backdrop and I was thinking of doing a few different styles on it. I understand I’ll have to wash it and soak it multiple times. Just wondering ✌🏻❤️
@FunEndeavors
@FunEndeavors 2 жыл бұрын
I've done a few like that (spirographs, painted shirts, re-dyes, reverse dyes, etc...). I'm sure you already know that once an item has been dyed, it will release some of the dye into your soda ash solution when you soak it again. I usually pour a little of the soda ash into a separate container to soak items like that in so that it doesn't contaminate my main soda ash container. Sometimes it is easier to add the soda ash into your liquid dye instead of doing another soda ash soak. Of course you would need to use the dye immediately, but I've done that several times when I'm adding dye to an already dyed shirt. Have fun with your tablecloth - it sounds like it's going to be a cool backdrop!

What is the wooden rod you have the sinew wrapped around. I looked at your links and didn’t see that item:) I ordered the sinew from your link. Is there some brands that come with that rod inside or do you re-wrap on that rod for use. Thanks for the tips :)

Love it! I just did one like this 2 weeks ago with fall colors. Looks the same just diff colors! Love all the extra info in this one! Very helpful! Also, did u see a diff in puting the dyes on top of the ice versus under ? I think it looks the same as under.
@FunEndeavors
@FunEndeavors 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I think there is a little different look to putting the colors over the ice vs. under the ice with this design. I think when the dye goes under the ice the colors are more distinct within the lines. Over the ice I think they flow more gently from line to line. I hope that makes sense. Here is a link to an orange shirt that was tied in a similar fashion, but I put the colors under the ice. On the orange shirt the colors don't flow as much from 1 section to the next one as they do with this shirt: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z32oZWCmmtyejcU

You absolutely should. It never ceases to amaze me how the dye over the ice seems to find the various geode sections and follow the sinew lines. No matter how I put the shirt in the container and apply the dye, each section is a different color.

Soda ash is used to raise the pH so that the fiber reactive dye that I use bonds properly with the fabric. Here is a link to a blog post I made explaining what soda ash is and the use for it in tie dyeing. www.funendeavors.com/tie-dye-blog/zd1qlk7dvuzwrglfbio4yvs2t6c97d
