I think what some people forget is a shirt that has only been rinsed still has a bunch of dye on top of other colors. It's not until the shirt is washed and dried that the true colors show, and they would of course be brighter. Thanks for sharing your work.
@CasualCollisions

Exactly. I receive a fair share of, "That's not what the shirt really looked like -- you're lying" comments. Once the brighter colors bond to the fabric, the darker colors will not bond and just fill in the otherwise white areas.

Re-visiting tie-dyeing, I originally tried it in the late ‘60s with limited, rather murky success but the Procion dyes are a revelation! I received a little set as a gift, 4 liquid dyes so I’ll try this design as my first experiment. Your videos are so well-produced I’m confident I can produce something pretty, thank you 🙂

Well, it turned out great for a first go, I’m really pleased! Colours possibly not as bright as yours but I’m happy. One question if you don’t mind, have you ever tried mixing powder to a slurry then pipetting the design onto your fabric?

Your videos are some of the most helpful online for tie dye. I can predict what my project will look like with what you do. The end pics, though, do not look the same as what you rinse out. They look much flatter than what it looks like you are rinsing out.
@CasualCollisions

I don't rinse fully in the sink like most people do. The "correct" way to rinse the shirts in the sink is to rinse until only clear water can be wrung from the shirt. But, that takes many, many dozens of gallons. I rinse the shirt in the sink until the soda ash is removed -- roughly 1-1.5 gallons of water -- and, then move the shirt to the washing machine to do the "heavy lifting" with the washout process. That results in the sink rinse-out view being anywhere from mildly different to quite different than that of the fully washed and dried shirt.

Beautiful! Thank you for this one. I have some grumpy old men to do tie dyes for, and I can see this in various color combinations and perhaps more of the dark at the bottom. I love the primaries peeking through, but this is versitile enough that I think it could work even in grays or navies, maybe even, gasp! Power Berry........I know, boring, but grumpy old men like boring colors.

I've used rubberbands for an accordion fold and it's frustrating to say the least, but it will work. You just have to be patient and have a good amount of time.
@CasualCollisions

There's the problem for me -- I'm not a patient person. If I can buy something that will be used more than a couple of times to help speed up a process or increase the quality of a process, I probably will. :)

I know this video is old and I'm kinda late coming to the table but I'm wondering about the loop you leave in the sinew when ya move to the next tie. (Hope that made sense.... Lol)
@CasualCollisions
@CasualCollisions 3 жыл бұрын
I leave a bit there to work as a buffer in case I pull the next section too tight. That way I can continue working without it pulling the whole piece into a weird angle and forcing me to undo at least one set of ties and redo them. I hope that makes sense.

I love your videos. They have taught me so much. I do a lot of ice dye and order off the dharma company, but I would like to do some liquid dye but I'm not sure how much powder to mix with water. And I was also curious about how to mix up your thickened black or other colors you let the shirt sit in to soak?
@CasualCollisions
@CasualCollisions 5 жыл бұрын
For dyes that do not include turquoise: 1 tsp dye to 4 ounces water For dyes that include turquoise (there will be a 'T' notation on the Dharma/Custom Colours jars): 1 tsp dye to 2 ounces of water For blacks from Dharma: 1 tsp dye to 1 ounce of water For blacks from Custom Colours: 1 tsp dye to 2 ounces of water I use guar gum to thicken the dye; but, most people use sodium alginate. I dissolve about 1/8 tsp of guar gum into 8-16oz of warm water (depending on how thick you want the dye to be). Shake well and wait 30-60 minutes. Then add the powdered dye and shake well.

you might try pinning the areas together before tying them then you can take them out after you finish.

Hey man, off topic but do you know how I could go about removing washable marker from a shirt I made? It didn't come off in the washing machine the first time. Maybe some sort of rubbing alcohol? Would appreciate a response from you. Thanks
@CasualCollisions
@CasualCollisions 5 жыл бұрын
I put marks on the majority of the shirts I make and I've never had an instance where the marker doesn't wash out during the sink rinse or first wash cycle. Are you sure it was a washable marker? I stick with Crayola Washable to be sure that what I'm using will be removed in the wash. Rubbing alcohol can be used to remove permanent marker from most solid surfaces; but, it just causes the marks to bleed/run on a porous surface most of the time.

@@CasualCollisions thanks for the response. I'm gonna give it a go with some Q tips and rubbing alcohol, hopefully the black doesn't bleed out.

I use Procion Fiber Reactive Dyes: www.dharmatrading.com www.customcoloursinc.com/ www.grateful-dyes.com/ They are a fine powder and both physically and chemically bond with the fabric due to the use of soda ash.

@CasualCollisions
@CasualCollisions 5 жыл бұрын
You could try; but, the majority of it will wash out in the first rinse. The dyes I use are Procion MX dyes and they bond to natural fibers so much that you can wash the fabric dozens of times with little-to-no change in the dye color.

You need to soak the shirt for 20+ minutes in soda ash (sodium carbonate) use the spin cycle on your washing machine or wring out as much solution as possible. Do not rinse or wash out the soda ash before dyeing.

The images at the end are accurate to the color of the final design. You're welcome to read the reviews on Etsy: "I haven't tried this one yet, but I love how yours looks - colors even brighter in person!", "Nice quality, heavy material, shirt. T-Shirt has deep colors as the photo shows.", "The colors in this tie dye are amazing!", "Awesome! The tie dye job is just so cool with tons of dimension.", "Awesome! The tie dye job is unique and bright.", "The detail is amazing. Pics don't do it justice.", etc.

You mention rubber bands not being worth it. If you had put 1 rubber band lightly on the end of your fold after your first rap of sinew, it would have held it together while you wrapped the rest. Then remove it when your wrap gets to the rubber band.
@CasualCollisions
@CasualCollisions 5 жыл бұрын
I've tried it before and it actually required more time for me to place enough rubber bands to hold, wrap the sinew, cut the bands, more sinew, etc. than it did for me to just adjust the accordion folds. A single rubber band at the end didn't hold well enough to make any difference for me. It might work better for others, though. I do regularly use rubber bands for spirals.
