I really like this shirt. Using a "sawtooth" pattern for dye application with a "vest" style fold has a very nice result. Love it.

When I'm editing, there are *so* many "okay's" to deal with. I'm pretty sure it's my most frequently used word in the videos. lol I appreciate your feedback and for KZbin's decision to push my videos into your suggestion list. Oddly enough, I never intended to focus on tie dye on this channel.... It was supposed to be a random channel - on various DIY stuff including woodworking, projects, metal-working, etc. But, the tie dye videos bring in the most views; so, here we are. Let me know how your tie dyes turn out.

So you use a fixative when washing? What detergent do you use when washing out your dyes?
@CasualCollisions
@CasualCollisions 3 жыл бұрын
Nope. I used synthrapol a few times about a decade ago; but, I didn't notice any difference so I just went back to using the same detergent I use for all my other clothes. I use whatever detergent I happened to find a coupon for at the time I bought it - Arm & Hammer, Purex, HEB, etc. The first wash is with whatever other tie dyes I'm washing out. After that, if it's a shirt I'm keeping, I just wash it with everything else. I'm one of those "everything can be washed together" people - darks, bright colors, whites, towels, etc. I've never had an issue with colors bleeding.

To be sure there's enough soda ash remaining to allow the dye to bond to the fabric and result in rich, bold colors. If you're looking for pastel colors in the final result - don't add the extra soda ash.

@@CasualCollisions Mostly dry! Soda ashed for 20 minutes, spun in washer, tied damp, let dry 2-3 days, rinsed until water was clear, washed in hot with synthropol.
@CasualCollisions
@CasualCollisions 3 жыл бұрын
I always dye immediately after tying - while the shirts are still damp. I don't like the results when I dye dry material. That might be the issue. I also only rinse for 2-3 minutes to clear all the soda ash, I haven't used synthropol in 5+ years as I didn't find it resulted in any difference in the final result, and I only wash in warm with an extra rinse. But, all the washing exercises are highly dependent on the water in your area and what works for me doesn't work for everyone.

So would you be able to give me a ballpark on how much dye would I'd need per shirt? A quick Google search has a number of different answers, such as dividing the number of shirts by four, then dividing that number by the number of colours you're using, and that gives you the amount in oz. But that seems a little low for what's going on here, or any other video. I'm planning on buying Dharma dyes, as I've heard they're some of the best. Also, what else should I get on top of dye - soda ash for sure, what about urea/synthrapol/etc? I don't know what differences sinew/rubber bands/zip ties have in terms of application, should I just pick up some bands? There's a ton of stuff out there for tie dyeing, and it's a little overwhelming. I remember as a kid I just tied a few rubber bands to a dark shirt and dunked it in some bleach.
@CasualCollisions
@CasualCollisions 3 жыл бұрын
Procion Dye is Procion Dye - whether it's from Dharma, Custom Colours, Grateful Dyes, etc. The distributers all work from the same 22 primary dye colors to create their own colors/blends. There are turquoise/cerulean supply issues at the manufacturer level, so you'll need to research which distributer can supply the most colors you're looking to purchase: www.dharmatrading.com www.customcoloursinc.com/ www.grateful-dyes.com/ I have urea, synthropal, etc. on hand; but, haven't used anything other than dye, soda ash, and water for the past 4+ years. I also do not bag my items after they're dyed like you're "supposed to". Why? Because it's so incredibly humid here that I can leave things out from March - October for 48+ hours and they would still be completely wet. The winter is a bit different; but 24 hours is still easily attainable without a wetting agent due to the humidity. If you live in a dry area, then you would likely need to use urea with your liquid dye and/or at least cover your other dyes to keep the moisture in the material for 24 hours. For my first wash cycle in the washing machine I just use whatever detergent we currently have on hand for our regular clothes. I do a single wash cycle with an extra rinse and toss them in the dryer. After that, they're treated like any other clothing we have and they all get tossed in the wash together - white towels, tie dye, solid colors, etc. - and, I've never had an issue with bleeding colors. Your mileage may vary depending on the type of water you have in your area. Sinew and rubber bands serve different purposes; and, it's not readily possible to get tight ties with rubber bands -- at least not to the level that can be achieved as easily as sinew. They each have their place. If you want to keep dye contained to specific areas - sinew is the best bet. If you want to have white lines where you tie - sinew is the best option. For everything else, rubber bands will work in most cases. Though, I do use sinew loosely at times because it's simply easier to use sinew in some designs; and, the reverse is true as well. So, having both on hand and understanding what works best for you in different situations is a fair part of the process. Regarding dye usage. I've been accused of using "excessive amounts" of dye for my work. And, there have been several "kerfuffles" on social media sites regarding the "too much" versus "too little" dye. But, it comes down to personal choice: do you like pastel, hyper-saturated, or something between the two extremes? Because, that will determine how much dye you use. The spoon I use in the videos is a baby spoon - roughly 1/4 teaspoon in volume. I'd had many say that it looks like a teaspoon or even a tablespoon and assume I'm dumping $10+ on every design. But, the reality is, I use about 25 cents worth of dye as an average across all the work I do inclusive of all the colors for an XL shirt. I realize that's not the type of measurement you're looking for; but, it's the only thing I keep track of since inventory is the only method where you can account for loss, spills, etc. I buy in 1-5 pound jars that are anywhere from $8.00 to $32.00 per pound - depending on the color - with Cerulean being the most expensive dye at $25-$32/pound while most of the others are half that price or less.
@jacksmith785
@jacksmith785 3 жыл бұрын
@@CasualCollisions Thanks for all this information! I'll probably stick with soda ash, and get both sinew and bands to start. I don't think I'll be quite getting dyes in 1lb containers, but I do enjoy reasonably saturated hues - often in rainbow or otherwise multicoloured palettes - which will probably rack up the cost quickly - I live in Canada, so the costs would be around 30% more compared to USD. I'm in a fairly dry part of the country, so while I'll hold off on the urea for now, I'll definitely have to stuff them in plastic bags for the 24 hour or whatever period. That spoon really does look huge in the video, almost a teaspoon, but if it's a quarter teaspoon it's not too bad. I had actually ballparked around $10 worth of dye per shirt just looking at videos from you and a couple other creators, but I think I was overestimating the size of a shirt once it's been pleated, scrunched or twisted. Maybe about half an ounce of dye per colour if I'm really saturating it? In any case, I'm looking forward to learning how to do this. Definitely will be trawling through your shirt videos for inspiration. Thanks again!
