In this video I demonstrate and explain the entire process of how I tied a black t-shirt in a fan fold design and used color remover to remove part of the black dye. Then how I retied it and dyed it to make a rainbow fan fold shirt.

This video was just what I was looking for. I don't like the orangy-peach undertones of just the bleach method and I didn't want to stop just there, which is what seems to be trending at the moment. I wanted to then do something colorful as well but I was left with that undertone that could really end up throwing off the finished look I was going for. First piece to this experiment is setting up with the color now as we speak. Wish me luck! I will definitely be trying your recommendations in future...thanks again for the info.

Sooooooo pretty! You always amaze me! I was wondering how to do this without bleach! Hate the smell of bleach, although Rit remover has a very funny smell lol it reminds me of nair hair remover. Thank you! That's funny about the Rit - the smell kind of reminds me of the old hair perms. That's the reason why I put the Rit in a bucket outside - I don't want that smell inside the house. Even outside I wear my respirator. I agree though - I think that the bleach is worse.

Would I be able to put the Rit solution into say a squeeze bottle and apply it to the t shirt or does it have to be submerged into the solution for it to soak and have the effect? Also what are your thoughts on using vinegar to set colors after tie dye? Does it work or ruin it?
@FunEndeavors
@FunEndeavors 4 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure about the squirt bottle - I haven't tried it yet. However, I have a design that I want to try it on and so I'm planning on trying it. I don't use vinegar. I use Procion Fiber Reactive Dyes, and I've never had a problem with them fading after all of the dye that didn't react gets rinsed out of the cotton. I am still wearing shirts that I made 10+ years ago. Personally, my shirts will get holes in them before they fade - ha! I have seen though where they use vinegar in acid dyeing fibers like wool or silk, but I haven't worked with those. There are other dyes on the market that require vinegar as well, but the ones that I use don't. I don't think the vinegar would ruin your item though. It's a very common laundry additive - I've heard of some people using it in the rinse cycle of their regular clothing in place of fabric softener.

what would you suggest if I only wanted to remove color on half of a garment?
@FunEndeavors
@FunEndeavors 4 жыл бұрын
You could just dip the garment in the dye remover instead of totally submerging it. Otherwise you could try the bleach method. I use 50% bleach and 50% water and put it in a squirt bottle. That way I only bleach the area that I would like. Then I rinse the shirt really well and put it into a 1 part hydrogen peroxide to 9 parts water solution to neutralize the bleach. I just let it soak for about 20-30 minutes and then put it in the washing machine with regular laundry detergent. The bleach method can really eat away at your fabric though and make holes form in the shirt. It is a little riskier method to remove the color.

Hello, is the Soda Ash step necessary? I’m going to use Tulip dye for my project.
@FunEndeavors
@FunEndeavors 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, soda ash is what bonds the dye with the fabric. You might check your package of Tulip dye though because I think they may add the soda ash to the dye bottles. If not, you can pick up a product called Arm & Hammer Washing Soda from Wal-mart and use that. (It is soda ash) You would need to dissolve 1 cup of the soda ash into 1 gallon of water.

Thank you! That would look cool! I've made several shirts that I untied after removing the color and tied a different way. I really like the effect that it gives. I'm working on a video now for a shirt that I spiraled and then retied as a burst. I used kind of dark colors for the burst so the spiral is a more subtle part of the design, but I think it ended up looking cool. I'm looking forward to warmer weather too - it makes tie dyeing a bit easier.

would bleaching remove the color too? i dont have the RIT color remover on hand and hesitant to go out. Or how else could I achieve that?
@FunEndeavors
@FunEndeavors 4 жыл бұрын
I've used bleach before. For me, it's been hard to get enough color out of the shirt using bleach without damaging the fabric. If you do use bleach - make sure you neutralize the bleach with a 1:10 solution of hydrogen peroxide and water. Otherwise the bleach will continue to eat at your shirt. I bought my Rit color remover from Michaels Craft Store. Where I live - I can order online and do curb pickup or have it shipped to my house. Otherwise, I saw some available on Amazon too, but it was a little more expensive.

Hey ! So I just followed your video for a couple shirts and they came out pretty good but a lot of black was taken out of the shirt and didn’t have as much black lines as yours did , I used like a thin yarn string and I’m wondering if that’s why the dye got to a lot of my shirt maybe ?

Yes, the sinew that I use has a wax coating which makes a waterproof barrier and doesn't allow the dye remover to get to that area so that it is left black. i love this video!!, was there a reason for you not originally using kite string ?
@FunEndeavors
@FunEndeavors 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I wanted to have the black lines in the shirt after I submerged it in the Rit Color Remover. The sinew I used for the first tie is waxed and makes a barrier where the liquid doesn't get into that area of the shirt. Therefore, when I put it into the Color Remover, the area under the sinew stayed black. If I would have tied it with kite string, most of the black would've been removed. When I tied it the 2nd time, I used kite string because I wanted the dye to be able to saturate the entire shirt.

I'm not entirely sure, I'm kind of heavy handed with the dye. According to the Dharma Trading Company website, you should be good with ordering 2 ounce containers of each color of dye. The 2 ounces of powder will make up quite a bit of liquid dye. Here is a link to a materials list from Dharma for a group project of 20 shirts. Hopefully it will help. I tried this method, but I didn’t use sinew string. When I put my items into the color remover basically ALL the color was removed, there was hardly any black left at all. Do you think it’s because I didn’t tie it tight enough? Or, maybe I had too much color remover in my bucket (I used 3 boxes for 5 adult shirts and 1 child’s shirt). Why is sinew important to use rather than other string? I used like a burlap/hemp thick string. Any advise or help knowing what I did wrong would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!
@FunEndeavors
@FunEndeavors 4 жыл бұрын
The part that you see black on my shirt is where I used sinew. Sinew is coated in wax and so the color remover or dye can't penetrate under it when it is pulled really tight. I would definitely try the sinew to get the black lines. Otherwise, you might be able to apply the dye remover with a squirt bottle instead of dunking it like I did, and you would probably end up with more black. I use a squirt bottle when I use bleach to remove the color, but I haven't tried that with the Rit yet. I dunked a shirt that I tied into a spiral and just used rubber bands - most of the color was removed, but I did end up with some black. Here's a link to that video in case you want to see what it looked like. kzbin.info/www/bejne/q5PMpYFmmNabgac

@FunEndeavors
@FunEndeavors 3 жыл бұрын
Yes it was. I used the sinew to leave the black lines in the shirt during the color removal process. Since the sinew is waxed, it created a barrier and wouldn't let the color remover into that area. I used string for the dyeing process because I wanted the dye to be able to reach every area of the shirt. I also could have just left the shirt tied with sinew and washed it, soaked it, and dyed it. “Usually I use kite string, but today I’m using sinew for this design.” Why is that? Just wondering the difference between kite string and sinew and why you use one for the remove dye process and the other fit the add die process. Thanks!
@FunEndeavors
@FunEndeavors 2 жыл бұрын
Normally when I dye a white shirt with this design, I don't want any white lines in between the colors like sinew would give. I use the kite string to hold the folds tightly in place, but still allow the dye to move and blend. Honestly, with a side fan fold most of the time I would incline ice dye it and so I want the colors to freely move down the shirt and not be stopped by sinew lines. To reverse dye a black shirt, I need the sinew to keep the black lines in the shirt. The wax coating on the sinew will protect the area underneath from having the color removed - leaving the black lines. If I would have tied it with kite string, all the black would've been removed from the shirt when I submerged it.

I use the Rit Color Remover for my reverse dyes most of the time. The Rit doesn't damage the fabric like the bleach can. Bleach is not bad to use. You just need to make sure that you neutralize it with a hydrogen peroxide solution or it can still continue to damage your shirt.

I used 2 Rit color remover packets this past time and I put 5 shirts in the bucket. I haven't tried it with anything other than cotton since I usually apply dye afterwards. I squirted it on and showed that in a video that I posted a couple days ago. It is a red spiral on a black shirt. I could see the dye running out of the shirt, but ended up dunking it in the bucket just to make sure. If your shirt is tied tightly enough or if you use sinew - it won't remove all of the color. If it is tied too loosely, it probably will remove most of the color.

After they are in the color remover for 20 minutes, I take them to a sink and rinse them, untie them and immediately throw them in the washing machine. The water temperature doesn't really matter for the wash cycle. I usually do warm with just regular laundry soap. You can throw them in the dryer without fabric softener or you can just put them straight in your soda ash solution.

Ugh I did the dye remove for 30 mins for 1 shirt and one box and it still was brown so I washed it out in the washer . I think it’s cute with how the brown and black is I’m gonna add my tie dye and see what my final product is . I just don’t get why it didn’t remove all the color ?

That's a bummer - Was your shirt 100% cotton? I've heard that some black shirts don't release the dye as well as others too. I believe it has something to do with how the shirt was originally dyed black. I personally haven't tried any other brand other than the Gildan because that's mainly what I use, but maybe that could be the reason. The only other reason that I can think of was that your water wasn't hot enough. With the Rit Color Remover the water needs to be really hot. I am not willing to do the process in my kitchen on the stove (like the directions on the box) and stink up the house, and so that's why I do the bucket method outside. All the water in the bucket though is hot. I add super hot tap water just to dissolve the dye remover and then I add boiling water on top of that to fill the bucket up. I also stir my shirt in the bucket periodically. I really like the brown and black look though. It might be cool to just leave it that way. You could also try to go through the process again and see if you could get more dye to come out. You could always tie it a different way the 2nd time and make a cool design from just the color removal process. Experimenting is what makes tie dyeing fun!

You can usually get it anywhere that regular Rit dye is sold. I purchased this at Michael's craft store, but I've seen it at many grocery stores. You can purchase it online at Amazon, but it's a bit more expensive. How would u do this with a white shirt but the same colors??!! I tied a white shirt up like this but I'm stuck
@FunEndeavors
@FunEndeavors 4 жыл бұрын
I've used a white shirt before and just added black to the back. So, to do that you would add the color to the front. Then turn it over and add a light coat of black to the whole back side. Then turn it back over and process your shirt with the black side down. Make sure and don't add too much black or otherwise it will overtake all of the color on the front side. The black stripes won't be going the same direction - they will be more like sun rays, but it will still look really cool. Here's a link to the video of a spiral shirt that I did using the technique above. Have fun! kzbin.info/www/bejne/q2aVpXt4gKuoq7M

@@FunEndeavors I am going to do as u said and just leave it as is and get some black shirts. When u bleach or use the rit remover, do u rinse it out after? Also, are u folding it up the exact way again after you do the bleaching? This 1 one looks like a lot of work. Lol it took me an hour to fold up a heart one, and I don't think it's gonna turn out. I have a hard time knowing what colors to put where. Also I'm assuming u use professional dye like Dharma or something, but I can't afford that yet, I use tulip. And get the refills. I have major issues with the bag desolving completely and it leaves specks and slimy pieces all over my shirts. I spend half the time dabbing it off with a paper towel. Do u know why this happens? I thought it may be cuz I didn't shake it enough but I shook them way longer than u should have to. If I order from Dharma, I feel like it's gonna be extremely expensive being u have to order them individually. Do u use a lot to mix one bottle? Do they last long? Tulip is gone after one shirt for me. Thanks for all the tips! Also do u dye when shirts are damp or dry? Have a great night tx again! I love your dyes soooo much! Especially that rainbow one!

@@kariann226 I untie my shirts and throw them in the washing machine and wash them to get out any of the color remover before I begin the dye process. For this particular shirt - I did tie it the same way to dye it, and I usually dye my shirts dry. Yes, I do use the professional dyes that they sell at Dharma. If you're tie dyeing quite a bit though - it might be worth the investment for you. Lemon Yellow, Turquoise, and Fuchsia are the 3 main primary colors of tie dye. You can make a rainbow on the shirt by just overlapping the colors. If you start with Fuchsia, overlap a bit of the fuchsia with lemon yellow to make the orange, then lemon yellow, then overlap a bit of the lemon yellow with turquoise to make the green, then turquoise, then overlap a bit of the turquoise with fuchsia to make purple. I went to the Dharma site and checked and they seem to be out of stock on the Turquoise right now, but I noticed that Grateful-dyes.com has all 3 colors. If you switch over to the professional dyes, you will need to purchase soda ash to soak your shirts in. This is a necessary item - otherwise, the dye will not bond with the fabric and will just wash right out of your shirt. I also noticed while I was on their site that Grateful Dyes has a "Tie Dye Kit In A Bag" for $13.75. It includes the 3 colors that I mentioned above and purple and they include the soda ash powder. That might be one of the best options to test and see if you like working with the professional dyes. They also ship very quickly if you are wanting your dyes soon. Some of the other suppliers are a little behind right now. Have fun though - and I hope your shirt turns out awesome!

When you did the reveal after the color removal, was that just to show the audience what it looked like? Would you have just proceeded with the dying process without having to re-tie it, for your own purposes? You can soak in Soda Ash without untying, can't you?

I actually rinsed them out after using the Rit dye remover , untied them, and put them in the washing machine and washed any excess dye remover out of them. I probably could've just left this one tied with sinew since I did the same fold for the color as I did for the dye removal. My washer is pretty intense though so it might have loosened up during the washing process. You could definitely give it a try though.l

You can, but if you use rubber bands you need to wrap them really tight. If they are loose, the dye under the rubber band will be removed too. Then you will end up with just a beige shirt without a design in black on it.

Yikes - is your hoodie cotton or polyester? A lot of the hoodies I've found are mostly polyester, and the Rit won't work as well on polyester. It may remove some of the color - depending on the process that the garment was dyed with - but not as much as it would with a cotton item. The fact that it did turn brown though meant that the Rit Color Remover was working at least a little bit, but it didn't just remove enough color. There are other methods on the package of Rit Color Remover that might work better for a thick item like a hoodie. I know that the hotter the water - the better it seems to work. Rit lists the stovetop method as the preferred method for removing color, so that might work better. I've got a few 90% cotton black hoodies that I'm planning on using the Rit on, but so far I've just worked with 100% cotton T-shirts. If it were me, I would retie it and try it again using the stovetop method. Hopefully that method will work for you.

I tied the black shirt with artificial sinew which has a wax coating. So, every area that had sinew tied around it stayed black after it went in the dye remover because the liquid couldn't get under the wax coating of the sinew. Then I added the color dye in after I removed most of the color from the black shirt.
