Ok, so I tried this, ice dye only. I used a cereal box to hold the spiral up. I really like how it turned out, even the little specks of the individual dyes that showed up in spots. Thank you, this was amazing. I am really loving your videos.

You shouldn't need to add extra soda ash if the shirt is pre-soaked, unless you add a lot of extra ice.

The black splits are very unpredictable and vary quite a bit between both the black color options as well as each batch of black. There are just so many "primary" dyes in the black dyes.

I really like this idea for vertical dyeing - will be trying it for sure! I suspect those soft areas are the HWI, the hot water seems to soften things for me. Love the splitting, I was surprised since you did it below the ice and I have found splits on top of ice mostly. Like the overall effect!
@CasualCollisions

I prefer ice on top of almost everything when I ice dye. With more patterned designs, it results in much greater control of the final placement.

I love it. Mind blowing that that is just one color of dye?
@CasualCollisions
@CasualCollisions 4 жыл бұрын
Yes and no. There are 22 "primary" Procion dyes that are a single, "non-splitting" color. Then, those 22 dyes are used by distributers to create a palette of hundreds/thousands of colors you can purchase. Most of the commercial black options are made up of 10+ of the 22 primary dyes. So, while it's a single commercial "black" dye being used, it's component colors will split at various stages when ice dyeing.

This reminds me of the feel of the colander spirals but in reverse.. Instead of the center bleeding out and fading to the edges, the edges bleed out and fade to the center (if that makes sense?) Very cool!

I wonder if you added a little more dye in the center of the dye area and added two layers of ice if that would have filled the white part of the spiral a bit more. I really like it! Excited to try it. Do you think turquoise or grape from dharma dyes would split colors like your black dye did? Or better black, raven black, jet black or best black? Also, why did you choose that black ? It is an awesome look
@CasualCollisions
@CasualCollisions 4 жыл бұрын
There are 22 "primary"/single-component color dyes from Procion. These colors will not split into different colors; and, Turquoise is one of those primary colors. Grape will split; but, if I remember correctly, it has 3-4 component colors versus colors like Oxblood Red and most of the blacks that have 10+ colors. I only stock two blacks: Dharma's Better Black and Custom Colours Dark Black. For a solid black with liquids, I usually use Better Black and for ice dyeing where I want splitting, I generally use Dark Black. I haven't tried Raven, Jet, or Best.

First of all, thank you for all your beautiful videos and for the inspiration! Already tried 1 of your guides and I think I got addicted, as i just watched your videos for 4 hours straight today. My Question is: Could you recommend me a replacement colour from Dharma for this #618 Dark Black? I can't get Custom Colours in Europe :/ But there are so many dharma blacks that I got confused, probably I should stick to the higher number blacks? P.S. I also stumbled over your health status vid from 2018, I hope you're doing well and that you'll be able to continue your awesome work as long as you enjoy it.

With Dharma, Better Black or Raven Black would be the best options. With regards to my health - it depends on the day. My vocabulary and memory are still greatly affected, periodic numbness in my face still occurs, and there are days where I'm in bed the great majority of the time. But, the rest of the issues are very sporadic and the speed of my speech is mostly normal.

From the black dye. There are 22 primary Procion dyes. From those 22 primary dyes, hundreds of dye colors are produced. In the case of most black dyes, 8-12+ primary colors are used, in varying ratios, and when ice dyed those primary colors split out of the black dye.
