This is the third "Single Color" video I've made - to see what can be accomplished with a single color of dye. This time with a mandala fold.

I have learned so much from you, like sinew! Who knew?😉 I used waxed dental floss since I can't get sinew here. Is it comparable? If I order, what type sinew do you use? Thanks. And thanks again for sharing!
@CasualCollisions
@CasualCollisions 5 жыл бұрын
It's the same concept; but, the sinew I is much thicker and has more wax. I use flat, waxed, artificial sinew, and order it in the 300 yard bulk rolls from Amazon. The color doesn't make any difference to me so I just opt for the least expensive.

What’s the main difference in ice dye vs reg dye? I am assuming the ice die is more diffused vs reg dye being more concentrated? Also how is the color concentration? Thank you in advance.

Great pattern! Thank you for telling me One question What is the white powder sprinkled after the dye? Is it salt? And is there no doubt that the leaving time is 24 hours?
@CasualCollisions
@CasualCollisions 4 жыл бұрын
It's soda ash and is required when using Procion Fiber Reactive dye or the dye will not chemically bond with the fabric. Almost everything I dye is left to batch for 24 hours. Maybe 5% of the 160+ video's I've posted are batched for 18-23 hours and another 5% are batched for 25-48 hours. There's a pretty significant difference in saturation between 18 and 24 hours; but, 24-48 hours is not nearly as significant. So, the general rule with Procion dye is to wait 24 hours.
@SWITCHmental

@@CasualCollisions Thank you very much for your prompt reply. Since soda ash can be made from baking soda, I will try making it with baking soda at home. I didn't know about the Procion dye. Thank you!

If you aren't dislocating your shoulder, you're not pulling the sinew tight enough.

Just have one question, is urea not required when ice dying? I use same dharma die but in bottles with urea
@CasualCollisions
@CasualCollisions 3 жыл бұрын
Urea is not used when ice dyeing and is only necessary when liquid dyeing if you live in a dry climate. I live in the southern part of the US and never need to use urea or cover the items while batching due to the humidity.

would this work with liquid dye? or how would it come out?
@CasualCollisions
@CasualCollisions 3 жыл бұрын
Yes. It would come out as a solid color instead of multiple variations from the splitting that occurs with ice dyeing. Here's a video that shows the difference between liquid and ice dyeing: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fpiooYlvZZqfpqM

I tried this out and didn’t have near the white. What did I do wrong? Again, THANK YOU for sharing your art!!!!
@CasualCollisions
@CasualCollisions 3 жыл бұрын
The amount of white depends on several factors: the moisture in the fabric, how tight you pulled the sinew, and the temp/humidity in the room when you dyed.

Why do you sprinkle more soda ash on the shirt when it has already been soaked in it?
@CasualCollisions
@CasualCollisions 3 жыл бұрын
The more ice applied, the more dilute the soda ash concentration becomes in the fabric. To increase the concentration to maintain full saturation of the colors, you generally need to add extra soda ash with each additional layer of ice.

You think i could get the same result of different tones of the colour if I use liquid dye instead of ice dye? 👀
@CasualCollisions
@CasualCollisions 4 жыл бұрын
It will not be the same as the liquid dye will not "split" like that of ice dyeing. Here's a video I made that shows the resulting differences between liquid and ice dyed patterns: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fpiooYlvZZqfpqM

Why do some people put the dyes on the ice instead of the fabric? What difference does it make?
@CasualCollisions
@CasualCollisions 4 жыл бұрын
Ice over dye allows you to place the dye in specific locations and have greater control of the results. Dye over ice results in more organic/flowing results where dye placement isn't as important to the final design.
