I think it's a real shame you don't go for the new tieflings. They're _incredibly_ compelling and the story behind them (and specifically _why_ they became visually/mechanically unified in the way they are now) is absolutely amazing. I would really highly recommend the Brimstone Angels series by Erin M. Evans. It deals in great depth with a lot of the great things about tieflings you described here: the way other people react to the apparently devilish tieflings, the question of what sort of reason would they have to be adventuring and how it relates to the fact that they are tieflings. But the series also deals a great deal with the hierarchies of the Nine Hells, the relationship between a warlock and their patron, and perhaps most interestingly, the history of the Toril Thirteen and the story of how they helped Asmodeus become a god and in so doing turned all tieflings into Asmodeus bloodline tieflings.

My father came up with the idea of a tiefling druid. He would often turn into a goat and terrorize a town by laughing and screaming at them. He would also clop his hooves on the ground and say "beheheheh! Gonna eat your feet!" And would chase down anyone slowly. And just when they thought they were safe in their homes he'd use spider climb to get into the top floor. Now if any villager decided to fight he'd return to his normal form (a baphomet looking tiefling, furry and tall) and use vines to drag them into the Forest. He had no other goal but to annoy anyone or anything, especially if it was approaching his throne in the forest. Please feel free to use this in any adventure. This is really an underrated concept.

The young man woke with a start. He'd been having a terrifying dream about a winged woman, wreathed in flame and as beautiful as she was terrifying. Thing was... He was awake now and the demonic woman was lying next to him smoking a pipe. He pulled the sheet up to cover his body and tried not to panic. "I... uh..." He stammered. The woman slowly blew out a stream of sweet-smelling smoke. "Alright, first off: no talking." "Bu-" She cut him off with a sharp look. "I swear, you mortals are just the worst to deal with. No talking. Talk again and I'll take your tongue out." The succubus waited a moment, eyebrows raised, and only considered when the man simply nodded. "Okay, that's a point to you. Yes, I'm a demon; yes, we had sex; yes, you're a father to a half-demon now; yes, you were passable. That cover everything?" The man opened his mouth to speak and then thought better of it. He simply did his best to emote a single question: why? "Ya know, I'd normally spin some bullshit about punishing you for that old beggar woman you kicked last week." The succubus took another draw on her pipe before tapping the ash onto the rich sheets. The man frowned but remained silent. "But sod it! Management said that there was a new splat book coming out and that we needed more tieflings running around." She shrugged. "You know how it is: new variants come out and suddenly everyone wants to play a race that's supposedly super rare. You can't even *imagine* how many good drow there are running around now-a-days. Ridiculous... Well, whatever; I'm just working nine to five. Word comes down from upstairs to make more tieflings, I go bang some mortals for long-term investments." The demon stretched, a gesture that moved her body in a way that could inspire men to conquer nations, and got out of bed. "Well, thanks, I guess. Or you're welcome. Whichever. Bye." A puff of acrid smoke popped into existence and when it faded, she was gone. The man sighed and got settled back in bed. "Goddamn WotC."

@@Nickz666, volcanoes frequently have very delicate ecosystems surrounding them due to the rich soils created by volcanic ash. I think a volcano druid would be awesome, access to all that destructive power, but still in tune with the balance of the world around them.

My girlfriend's first DND PC is a tiefling storm barbarian with the charlatan background. She is really interesting character, because she is kinda of the face of the party with the highest CHA and deception skills and is very soft spoken. But when shit hits the fan, she goes full barbarian with the war cries and great ax. It's amazing to watch my tiny girlfriend role play that out.

I actually played a tiefling Druid with a bit of monk multiclass into it. He was the son of a previous tiefling i had played that was a rogue that wound up seducing a elven princes of aspire. We wound up retiring our characters and doing a time skip forward about 18 - 20 years and i picked up the son that had been born and never seen. He was raised as a prince of the elves and taught the ways of being a druid and using nature and was super sheltered to how his race was treated by the rest of the world so when he decided to leave to go find what happened to his father he went from being royalty and well treated to people being scared of him. It was a really interesting combination i played up to level 17.

Cool! How'd you flavor the monk multi class? For my Dragoon (FFXIV type) build I flavored it as the training institution teaching meditation and martial arts to empower one's fighting (using battle master as part of the flavor) especially when fighting true evil.

Sense he was a way of the open hand we played it up more as he had some training from some of the elven guards and that's where he picked up on it from and because of his druid training as well it was played more as he can tell and read the natural flow of ki in living things and nature around him.

I love playing races against type. I love the idea of assimars and teiflings, having battles faught over them behind the scenes. An assimar is being tempted by a devil and a teifling paladin/cleric moving towards the gods, and there being battles between demons/devils and angels for their soul. Also, I have say, I love the ideas of teiflings not only being human/elf sized. I love the idea that a halfling/gnome/dwarf made a deal with a devil and a child was spawned from it was is a short-stack teifling. Thats just me though, and I think it’s obvious that I have a halfling problem.

One of my favorite characters I've ever played was in 3rd edition. I was a Tiefling Paladin named Azraela. I chose the combo because I liked the idea of a paladin that was having a hard time being a paladin. She wanted to be good and do heroic things but at the same time her inner being itself was calling her to the dark side. So she ended up being really mean but still following all of the paladin tenets. She was lawful good, but a huge jerk. One of my favorite scenes was when she came across this little street urchin boy in Sigil who was caught stealing food. The guard dragged him into the middle of the street in front of the crowd and chopped his hand off, showing what they do to thieves in that part of town. Azraela was mad at the boy for stealing but also understood he did it to survive. So she cauterized his wound with lay-on hands and dragged the boy to the nearest temple. Threw down a huge sack of gold and asked the clerics to regenerate the boys hand. She talked about how the crime he had committed was one of circumstance, not malignancy, and that he could fight against his own lot in life, just as she did. Shortly after that boy actually became her squire and she taught him the ways of the paladin. The campaign lasted several years and it was really rewarding. There was even an arc in which she was further corrupted by a demon but she willing did so in order to save the party. So for a short time she was transformed into a blackguard. And only by nearly sacrificing herself in atonement was she able to regain her paladin levels and turn back to the light. As far as optimization went, she was horrible. But it was all about the roleplay and game experience and it worked out just fine. We weren't a power gaming group so it was just fun.

first time DM with a group of first time players (this channel was a huge influence btw along with projared's D&December) and one of my players was pretty set on being a druid tiefling and she didn't come in with much background but she's been really inventive with it through our first two sessions. she enjoys animal company more than human company, she relishes the memory of badly burning a guy who was catching butterflies, and while she was supposed to be on watch decided to have a conversation with the oxen pulling the wagon about horns

There are a bunch of Class options you can go with here: -Druid, Circle of the Land (Underdark). The character or their ancestor broke out of the lower planes through the Underdark. Learned how to commune with the unique ecology of that realm. -Ranger, Monster Slayer. They hunt monsters, because a monster (read: devil) raped their mother. Now they want to stamp out everything evil and infernal. Only when there are no other monsters in the world, can the ranger finally kill themselves. Because, in their eyes, they are also a monster, that must be purged. -Rogue, Mastermind. Basically the idea with the Bard College of Whispers, but without the necessity of magic. The tiefling works to maneuver society, to pave the way for their masters. -One idea I had was an Archfiend Warlock, who was not originally a Tiefling. They were born human, but then got possessed by (or became the living prison for) a devil, whose presence morphed the child's body into something more "comfortable". The tiefling escaped captivity, and now live on so the devil remains trapped inside them. Even the length of a mortal life, with one fewer fiends tormenting the innocent, is worth the tiefling's own durance. As they develop Warlock powers (from the internal fount of hellish power within them), the devil tricks them into becoming an adventurer, rather than remaining a hermit for the rest of their life. Either the tiefling dies on the adventure, freeing the captive, or the devil can nudge them towards becoming Evil, through an escalating series of reasonable compromises. In either case, the devil can win. Hence the drama.
@Bluecho4
@Bluecho4 6 жыл бұрын
Oh! Some more! -Barbarian, Path of the Ancestral Guardian. The barbarian is hounded by the souls of their tiefling ancestors, who have been barred from their rest in heaven (or refuse their rest willingly) until the family has accomplished some specific task. Probably having something to do with rendering null whatever deal their family progenitor made with hell that gave them the infernal taint to begin with. -Warlock, Undying Patron. The character is convinced they are damned. They seek to forestall this doom by pledging themselves to an undead Patron, like a vampire lord or lich. At first, just to extend their life (albeit unnaturally), and perhaps to eventually become truly undying themselves. Can't go to hell if you never die. **Head Tap Meme** -Cleric, Trickery Domain. Pledged themselves to a trickster god, in hopes they might find a loophole in the contract they or their ancestor signed with hell. -Bard, College of Lore. They won a golden fiddle in a contest with Mephistopheles, but the instrument carried a curse that morphed them into a tiefling. Travels the land, looking for any scrap of lore that could be used to reverse the process. The bard also looks uneasily over their shoulder, since the devil may return for a rematch, looking to get both the fiddle and the character's soul. Given that Mephistopheles will be pissed and more careful next time, the bard needs to get as good at their craft as they can get, if they want to win.

One of my players has a favorite character that they always go back to: Lucieus, the Totem Barbarian. When he was a boy, he had a young goat he would play with all the time, his favorite goat. But one day, a vile group of gnome bandits came and killed his goat. And so, he hates all gnomes, killing and scalping them on sight. He goes into battle with absolutely nothing but a loincloth and a massive battleaxe, he's 7 feet tall, and he has a preference for decapitation as a extermination method. Oh also he looks basically like Satan, white hair and goat horns with cloven hooves, bright red skin. Absolulte madness.

Tieflings in my games are Planar Outsiders. They are any PC who comes from anywhere outside the Prime Material. (I had a player who had an human ranger, who ventured into the feywild. She had a child with an Eladrin and the resulting child was a "half elf" but because they were a planar outsider, they were re-flavored as tieflings with more nature based magics as opposed to fiendish magic.

the great and powerful depends on the type of setting you’re playing, I generally use the Renaissance era guns in my campaigns especially if the setting is very Pirate heavy. The more modern and futuristic options I have less experience with since I haven’t played a game where they’d be appropriate except having the bad guy for one campaign being a God of Time that can just pull guns out of the future.

Although I use 5th edition now, during my time with Pathfinder I found a small book called Blood of Fiends, that went in depth on Tieflings of fiends other than the classic devils, demons, and daemons (yugoloths). It went into decent detail about tieflings from Oni, Rakshasa, Devi, and I believe recalling a tiefling that was descended from Lovecraftian influenced fiends. Even if you don't play pathfinder, I highly recommend getting it or at least finding a pdf online.

Awesome. Thanks for addressing that watered down outlook on Teiflings in 5E. When I had to chance to play one, I instantly approached my DM with a request. "Can my Teifling be the son of an Erinyes?" I saw "Veritas" as entitled, martial, arrogant and ruthless, and Noble. When he said yes, that sent this character on a path where his past would really come back to haunt his training as a Paladin (Red Knight). This better tied the Blood War into the Out of the Abyss campaign, pitting a devil spawn into conflict with demons, drawing surface dwellers into his conflict. From the outset, he was a bit of a ponce - an entitled noble in over his head. Storytelling moments grew the character. The devastating loss of his squire, inner party conflict with a series of Aasimar characters (three so far. What's up with this? They're coming out of the walls like termites), a developing romance...all great moments. Now at 11th level, he's still going strong, with the inner moral conflict of ruthless war with demons and trying to be a good person for his love interest. Teifling Druid? That's a Fungal druid of Zuggtmoy. ;) In closing what I like about Xanathar's is the number of Teiflings in this tome that are NOT Warlocks. Awesome. Looking forward to the firearms debate in D&D. ;)

I'm actually developing a homebrew setting where tieflings are the race most likely to become paladins (in fact they have an academy in their own adopted city - long story short there was an invasion from the lower planes onto the Prime Material that left A LOT of tieflings as a results). They are aiming to redeem their bloodlines in light of their violent, tragic history.

I'm running a game that is set in an 'alternative Earth' where the tieflings basically replace gypsies. They have no land to call their own and travel in colourful wagons from place to place mistrusted and feared in most places but sought after and known for their effective charms and remedies. The story goes that they were once the mighty Atlanteans who had a great empire millenia ago but somewhere along the way they bacame corrupted and tyrannical due to an infernal pact. This resulted in a great war between Atlanteans and the dragonborn (Men of Lyonesse) that caused the melting of the ice and the end of the last ice age. Atlantis sank beneath the ocean and its cities were then claimed by Neptune and the tritons. The dragonborn lands of Lyonesse also sank beneath the sea and the only surviving city is that of Ys (a city that rises like Venice above the waves where the Scilly Isles are now) and their cities were then claimed by the sea elves. Dragonborn are also wanderers but more in the manner of the Dunedain in Middle Earth, soldiers without a kingdom but using Ys as a base and they are forever vigilant that no tiefling should ever again claim a crown in the world. Tieflings for their part are no longer concerned with conquest and live in the world simply ignoring borders and the affairs of men, elves and dwarves.

I actually have one of these! Virgil Sparksoul is a calculated tactician who has an unquenchable thirst for knowledge, particularly on subjects related to conflict. Virgil combines his straight-laced moral compass with the penchant for violence that he inherited from his ancestor. He’s a Feral variant Tiefling (from Sword Coast) which is +1 Int and +2 Dex. On top of that, he has the Hellfire trait instead of Infernal Legacy, so he has burning hands as a racial spell instead of hellish rebuke. He’s a dexterity-based fighter that uses a buckler and rapier, as opposed to typical your typical sword and board. You pick up the Warcaster feat at level 4.... and kick ALL THE ASS. He’s fantastic!

Funny you mention Tiefling Druid. One of my players is making exactly that, although his status as a Tiefling is different. He was born human, but after his family made deals with the ifreeti in the City of Brass and later reneged on it, he and his family members were turned into charcoal-skinned Tieflings as punishment. Whether or not they can regain their humanity remains to be seen. He became a Druid because he was rescued from his enslavement to the ifreet by a nature priest and liked some of the philosophies he followed about the impartial aspects of and peace that can be found in nature in the face of his poor treatment by others and his family’s greed that got him into this situation. Now he wants to eventually rescue his other family members. What else he does is up in the air.

One cool thing that happened in one of my games in reguards to tieflings is my places got a small county and starting advertising that they accepted anyone, so all the oprressed tie fling came in the thousands to this safe haven. So they built a prosperous city of almost entirely halting plus some dwarfs and a few humans that already lived there. The dwarfs and humans hated the fielding and there was a civil war for a bit. But then they came out and used the new formed army from the civil war and conquered everyone around them. And that's how the county of Kairn came to dominate faerun.

Flight really isn't that overpowered. Ah, you're in the air now? Whatever. I agree with them, if you don't like Flying at level one (like the Winged Tiefling), then make it harder for them. Archers, tight corridors, the works. It's only as bad as the DM lets it become.

I would rule that wings only give you Break-Fall until you acquire the feat for flying, and even then you'd be inferior to creatures that can fly naturally. Then again, I tend to be tolerant of a lot of things that give players plenty of power; as GM I can always curb-stomp the party without much effort, so I like it when they're powerful enough that I don't need to babysit them for the first few levels.

To give an example from one of my own campaigns for a Tiefling Monk. I created a monastery master based on Pai Mei from the Kill Bill Movies. He was a high level NPC based as a Long Death Tiefling Monk. The challenge was based around having a timed one on one duel with this master who would often just dodge or Spend his Ki to stay standing, just so he could exhaust the player. However the first time a player did a significant amount of damage would find the player afterward instantly receiving a blast of a Tieflings natural hellish rebuke. Tiefling instructors are just evil like that. Even if you manage to land a blow on your master, he can instantly punish you for doing so.

I have 2 tieflings that are in your difficult categories. The Tiefling druid came from a home where they were raised with other "monstrous" races as their siblings. All together they had a farm and was raised by druids (enhanced farmers) so it felt a natural path to take. My charater decided they wanted to explore the world and see how some of their more exotic farm creatures lived naturally. And the other tiefling is a cleric who worships the goddess Selûne (a moon goddess) and fun fact about this diety's church they have a growing section of them being tieflings. They are following the path of the goddess to their better selves. The goddess' whole theme is finding your way. And an idea that has been floating around was that my cleric tiefling was falling in love with a fallen asimar. Or as someone put it: the holy devil and the fallen angel are together.

One example of a tiefling druid I've had was the tiefling descended from a demon and so things like laws and kingdoms aren't really their style and they have a severe distaste of them but the wild untamed laws of nature felt right to them because it was the only "law" that couldn't actually be broken and so they joined a druid circle became a respected member of that society and lived in peace where they weren't scorned for their chaotic primal tendencies because he was a beast at heart.

I am playing a tielfing bard, who is in the college of lore. His infernal blood seems to make him hungry for power but at the same time, he was raised in a small traveling troupe of players. So while patient as his kin in the ways of social games, and hungry to prove his worth, he is more dedicated to protecting and gaining knowledge for good and the use of all. Doing the Waterdeep heist and you should have seen the sparkles that came off him when his party got the troll skull inn and found the space for the library. The hard part is finding a diety that is both hungry for knowledge, power and does good.

I picture a Tiefling Druid as someone actively pushing against once corrupted areas. Places where fiends and other unholy beings were summoned, or where great bloody battles took place; the tiefling druid weaves their magic into the plant life to cleanse the area, so it can’t be desecrated or become a ritual spot for cultists. They’re corrupted, sure, but that means they are also more tolerant of outside influences, and clear the lands so no others are corrupted like they were.

I had an idea for a Tiefling Druid a while ago. The concept is that they were a social outcast, so they spent all their time around animals instead. Animals didn't judge them for how they looked. So they became a Shepherd Druid in order to protect and be more attuned to their animal friends.

I like the idea of a tiefling druid that is harmonious with thermophiles, heat loving bacteria, much like the spore druid from Unearthed Arcana.

I like how they talked about how Tiefling Druid sounds kind of like an oxymoron ... as I am playing one. I spun it as my tiefling escaped from her parents in the nine hells and found a portal to the feywild, where she feel in love with the forests and flowers she found there. She became dedicating to experiencing as much of nature that is not on fire as possible.
