No one EVER EVER talks about the movie Waves(2019). It’s truly my favorite A24 film along with EEAAO. Like I could watch that movie so many times. It a movie about a black suburban family and just dealing with grief and wow. It’s just such an underrated and fantastic gem and I’m sad no one ever talks about this film when talking about A24 films.

Love your categories. My main disagreement would definitely be on "The Lighthouse". A24 released "The Witch" 3 years earlier and when I finally got around to it, my respect for the filmmaking and for Anya Taylor-Joy's performance couldn't change the fact that the story didn't 100% grab me. In sharp contrast I was grabbed from frame one by "The Lighthouse" ... the moody atmosphere is balanced so well by how trouser-shittingly silly the two characters are. I wanted to know what the hell their deal was, and even though the ending was ambiguous, it felt right and it left me satisfied. On the whole your rankings made sense. "Moonlight", "The Florida Project" and "Lady Bird" will always be god tier to me.

I love that The Florida Project is right where it should be. You described the film so well, too. Such a beautiful film. I just love it. My all time favorite. And I think the ending is perfect and beautiful. Did you see C’mon C’mon? The only film other than The Florida Project to evoke tears from my eyes. Again, just a beautiful film. And powerful. You’ve got to see it if you didn’t. And did you see Aftersun? It requires analysis after and at least two viewings, but also a must see! On first watch I was a bit underwhelmed, frustrated, and unsatisfying. It definitely was a “Why?” film for me at the time. But after some analysis (and a couple helpful KZbin videos), it made sense. And I really appreciated my second viewing. And without knowing, the film and its characters got under my skin in a way that I don’t think any film has before. I just can’t shake it, even many months later. And there are a couple songs from the film, anytime I hear them now, immediately I’m back in that place with those characters feeling those feels. It’s a must see, but also a must see, analyze, and see again. Ha. Elite tier for me now. Hereditary and The Lighthouse are elite tier for me as well, but I can get them not being for everyone. I can tell horror isn’t really your genre. 🤣 All in all, excellent video. I really enjoyed your commentary on these films. It reminded me I NEED to see Eight Grade still, too! Your video catapulted it up towards the top of my list. 🙂 I had forgotten about it!

The A24 films I’ve seen usually goes into one of two categories, either “wow that was such a masterpiece” or “interesting but too weird and too slow” and it all usually depends on if the ambiguous ending hits or not… anyways here’s my top 10: 10. The Witch 9. Minari (I expected to be a bit bored watching this tbh, but it was truly beautiful and it was so emotionally gripping) 8. Hereditary 7. Moonlight 6. Eighth Grade 5. Ex Machina 4. Aftersun (Watched it last week and the more I think about it the sadder it makes me, which is a good thing I guess?) 3. The Lighthouse (I knew it’d be weird, but I didn’t expect it to be so weirdly hilarious. Loved it) 2. A Ghost Story (I barely ever cry watching movies, but this one had me bawling in existential dread) 1. Everything Everywhere All At Once (An all timer for me, I truly felt like I was watching cinema history when I first saw it in the theatre) Honourable mentions: Lady Bird, Midsommar, The Lobster, It Comes At Night and Climax

What? I've only ever heard of people liking The Lighthouse. Genuinely have not read a single negative comment apart from this video. Also I definitely don't have the same tier list but that's cool, we all have our own tastes. Personally I love something absurdist and insane with striking cinematography so something like Moonlight, Ladybug, and Minari, whilst being very good movies in their own right, are a little too drama and slice-of-life focused. Would love to see a part 2 with Pearl, X, Everything Everywhere (obviously), and maybe After Yang because I think you might enjoy it.

For those who LOVE to be deeply disturbed by scary art/movies - hereditary is such an incredible movie. I still think about it all these years after I saw it in theaters. I didn't realize moonlight was a24! That movie lives in my brain rent free for sure! It should go down in history as one of the best movies of all time imo. Midsommer is also a good movie! Wow, That was fun even if I disagree with some of those. I'm not gonna comment too deeply on the subject because I really love A24 movies a lot. They always make my favorite movie by far and when I don't like/enjoy the movie there usually at least is some fun discussion to be had with them so if I comment on everything you'll end up with a 6000 words or more thesis on their movies. I'll only point out my biggest opinion difference is with midsommar, it just is one of my personnal favorite. The cinematography was amazing, the whole concept of creating a horor movie set in brigth daylight was so creative and a nice change of pace from all the darkness we usually get from that genre of movie it was unsettling in the most delightful wayand very eerie I loved every second of it and what to say about Pugh's performance it was simply magnificent. Well sorry for the rant I was just voicing my opinion, anyway great topic to talk about and just all around great video

If uncut gems made you anxious then they succeeded. Cause that was the point of the movie, to put yourself in the shoes of Adam Sandler's character and force you to see every bad decision he makes. Uncut Gems is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a long time. Specifically the editing and the script. It is like Howard Hawks dialogue or Robert Altman x 100. Which fits the aesthetic of east coast in general who naturally overtalk each other all the time. It fits so well with Howard Ratners character who is constantly dealing with 5-8 problems everyday and is stressed out. I’m probably crazy but the film is like therapy to me 😂.

Why put Uncut Gems in 'why?' just because it made you anxious? Or do you also think it's just not a good movie? I think even though it's a nailbiter, it's top class. Also they weren't making fun of 'The Room' it was more of a hommage and retelling of a ridiculous but amazing true story, that's based on the book the disaster artist, it's just a story that deserves to be told again on the big screen. You ask alot 'why' movies are made, but doesn't seem you first research why it actually has been made before posting a video on the internet about it..

I agree with Uncut Gems, i liked Adam Sandler's performance but that was about it. I too had to keep pausing the film but it wasnt an anxious thing it was a distraction thing and if i can get distracted whilst watching a film i always put it in meh. It didnt really grab me even in the bits it was supposed to but each to thier own

I like people with opinions unlike mine. They intrigue me, I like knowing them better. But for some reason when it comes to films I can't stand people with different opinion, I judge them immediately I don't know why. So that's why I struggled to make it to the end of this video, but I reminded myself I should be more patient and got through it. Please let me know why am I like this, am I the only one that does this.

Usually any horror film by A24, minus a few like It Comes at Night, would be top tier for me. Hereditary especially, it’s one of the best horror films I’ve ever seen. I’ve never experienced a level of uncomfortable dread and sadness from any other horror film like I did with Hereditary. The cinematography is gorgeous, the script is creative and disturbing, the acting is Oscar worthy.. You can’t ask for a better horror film, or just a good film in general.

Where would you rank Priscilla? Eighth Grade is one of my favorite movies of all tine and Pearl is one of my fav A24 movies too. If it wasn’t for that one disturbing scene in Hereditary, I don’t think its scary at all. Lady Bird was very boring imo.

To me Hereditary is the best horror film ever made because like Silence of the Lambs it's a horror movie that Isn't trying to be a "horror movie" there is no over the topness, except Toni Collette's acting which is just the right amount of over the top. Its just a dark and ominous movie that's directed, acted and filmed beautifully. Also Everything Everywhere All at Once is the best A24 film. (IMO)

To be fair, The Disaster Artist wasn’t made just to make fun of Tommy Wiseau and The Room. It was more a tale of friendship and following dreams. It’s a pretty inspiring story.

I kinda have a problem with the "it's not my cup of tea" thing. In some way i understand, but if you're doing some videos about cinema, shoudn't you learn to analysis movies even if "it's not your cup of tea"? Maybe you just prefer to tell YOUR opinion but sometimes you gotta get over it. Like, i didn't really enjoy Uncut Gems either. You said you was feeling "anxious", and yes, that's the fucking point of the movie lol. And it works really well. Just like Good Time, their first movie. And those movies, even if if i'm not a huge fan, are god damn unique. Just for this reason it shoudn't be in the Why section. Even if you didn't like it this is a movie that should be encouraged to be watched. Just like the Lighthouse. It's unique. But well, this is my point of view.
