Alex Turner is a songwriting genius. This is a line from the song "Fire and the Thud" that I absolutely love - "If it's true you're gonna run away, tell me where, I'll meet you there". My favourite song by Arctic Monkeys is Too Much To Ask. The line “Would a kiss be too much to ask? When you fit me as sunday's frozen pitch fits the thermos flask” is beautiful. Also “Would it be outrageous to say we're either shouting or we're shagging? Docked in tempestuous bays, at least that's how we felt yesterday. The eyes are getting heavier and whether you're asleep or awake is a mystery”
@2kool4skool153 жыл бұрын
RIGHT and the whole of Cornerstone too, that song is literally a poem in itself, especially with the progression of "can i call you her name?" and variations of that until "you can call me anything you want." right at the very end, as well as Love is a Laserquest, that song is so beautifully written, that it hurts

i ADORE florence welch. this poem is one of my favorites: RAGE I’m worried we are entering an age of rage, Where only anger will be considered as an asset And the gentle will be mocked, then eaten. Those with soft voices will have their tongues cut out, As punishment for not using them the right way. Don’t you know your words are weapons, Kindness is obsolete, As obsolete as handwriting, As obsolete as silence and darkness in a city.
@jennysterg3223 жыл бұрын
This reminded me so much of the words of Thucydides about the change of the meaning of words (he was talking about a time of war): “The regular meaning of words changed to fit the state of affairs. Insane risk was now bravery for an ally; careful forethought was cowardice; moderation was considered an excuse for being unmanly; circumspection was an unwillingness to commit; heedless attacks was termed manly behavior, and self-defense was a bland excuse for conspiracy”.

I think the issue is that none of these people (except maybe Florence W) studied poetry. So they think that songwriting skills can translate over when Poetry is a deceptively skilled form of wiring that needs practice and study. I think if Frank Ocean or Taylor studied a bit of poetry they would shoot to the poet bar next to Florence. Same goes for Potter, that's quite good for 17!

The poem with the “I’m rich but not in the way you think” line is actually based on Lana’s life (or written back then, I’m not sure) when she wasn’t famous for herself yet, just known for her rich father’s money. It makes a lot more sense and sounds less obnoxious that way

Has he ever pounced on you? I wonder what he looks like! Is he purple with red eyes? I wonder what he likes to eat. What about his size!! Tonight I'm gonna catch him! I'll set a real big trap! Then I'll train him really well. He'll answer when I clap! When I looked up in that closet, there was nothing there but stuff. I know that monster's in there! I heard him huff and puff! Could it be he wants to eat me? Maybe I'm his favorite tray. And if he comes to get me, I'll scream loudly, "Go away!!" If he's nice, I'll name him "Happy." If he's bad I'll name him "Grouch."
