Kuroyuki is the best boy for me, I cried during his route, I also LOVE obsessive LI's (what? I like trash) and classic bad abusive boys that turn out caring in their own way (looking at you Yang), I also don't mind a lil bit of bother/sister thing COUGH COUGH. and thats the beauty of otome games, everyone can get a slice of what they like!

Same with Orlok I felt zero romantic chemistry between him an Liliana. And his route annoyed me because they were so naive in it. And Yang I get the appeal but I don't like him at all and how he treats Liliana. I feel conflicted about Hanzo. I love his design and his route was very good. In my opinion the best storytelling and character development. But the age difference is really off putting for me. There was no need to make him that much older in my opinion. I love Limbo sooo much even though his route was pretty basic and Scarecrow really surprises me. I didn't think I would like him so much. Bustafellows has a special place in my heart. It was my first otome game and I hope we get a sequel soon.

I absolutely agree with everything you said! I'm normally okay with age gap romances but Hanzo's age was just too big for me to ignore 😩 Bustafellows really took me by surprise, I did not expect to like it as much as I did but it's one of my favourite otome games now. 💕

As someone who loves Samurai/ninja time period otome games, nightshade was one of my favorites MAINLY because of Hanzo honestly. Hanzo is a character in a lot of games I played for the last 10 years and his character doesn't change a lot because it's based off of a real person. Age gaps are absolutely normal in those time periods so you kinda gotta think about that before judging it too much. I've done everyone except chojio so far, and Hanzo is still my favorite in it despite liking gekkamaru a ton. I wish with all my heart that I could find a game that has Hanzo, Kotaro, Goemon, Saizo, EVRRYONE. Because "shall we date: Ninja Love" was one of my first and favorites.

I love hearing opinions on ranking otome guys. However, I would put Gill at S (he just had me squealing the whole time) Ryuki at A (his route was just so cute and sweet) Shelby at S (come on. He’s SS at everything!) Raul at B (honestly I didn’t feel a lot reading his story) Allan at B (same reason as Raul. Didn’t feel much) Peter/Jupiter at S (I absolutely love Jupiter and was so excited when I played his route!)

Goemon is such a difficult character for me because on one hand I cannot *stand* the way he treats Enju, but on the other I can see what they were going for with him and if he was just less sleazy and condescending I think I would have liked him a lot more :? I def agree with you about Hanzo, I felt like his was great for basically everyone but him - Gekkamaru, Kuroyuki and even Goemon all get some really good scenes and Enju gets maybe her best development out of any route but Hanzo himself is pretty unmemorable. (also, Kuroyukis route is by far my favourite but I 100% see where you're coming from on the younger brother thing)

Agree with most of your pics, but I'd personally put Orlok and Yang in S tier simply for replayability. I'd sell my soul to keep Orlok safe and Yang is just... Yang XD. Chojiro gets a C for COUSIN because that is ALL I could think about when I playing his route. Enju always calls him cousin lmfao.

I'm extremely new to otome and picked Variable Barricade as my first game. I love the art style, the music, the voice acting and the systems the game has. But these characters are driving me up the wall!! Ironically, I'm actually starting to like Shion and I thought I was gonna HATE him when I started. He just has this "something" that I find interesting. To be fair, I've only done Nayuta and Shion's first boards and still need to do Taiga's and Ichiya's before I can even get to their individual routes, so my opinions are far from complete. But from what I watched, I think(?) VB is the only game where no character got an S. Hmm...

I was very surprised by Shion too. I heard many people didn't like him but he ended up being my favourite character in the game! 😂 If I'm being brutally honest VB is one of my least favourite otome games that I've played, something just didn't click with me. I'm not too sure if it was the characters or the story but something was just 'missing' for me, although today I'm still not sure what exactly was missing LOL. I'm more into fantasy stories rather than modern day otome so that could play a big part in it! 😂

What about the side character you can’t date catagory🧐 I binged Cupid parasite last week and wanted an Owen route so bad. I also bought it like 3 days before Black Friday without thinking and spent the full $50 instead of the $25 it was for Black Friday😭 it’s ok tho I kinda went ham with the sale bc I bought Cafe Enchante, Collar x Malice, Code Realize, Men of Yoshiwara kikuya (waited a whole year to buy it for $10 instead of $20 since I bought Ohgiya last year and ended up getting the rest of these😅), and Olympia Soiree. The only thing stoping me from buying Taisho x Alice is that it’s not on sale. But kinda regretting buying code realize bc I played like 20 minutes and the art and story is like meh even though I love the European historical figures trope. Reddit also told me the mc is kinda dislikeable with the LIs mostly pushing her away most routes😭. Cupid Parasite is the only I’ve finished so far but I just know Allan will always be a forever S tier for me.

@@buttercupvenus Not gonna lie Cupid parasite and hyper fixation made me go down the otome rabbit hole after only casually playing a few voltage and ios vn and with Black Friday starting right after I finished it I threw all ration down the drain and splurged😭 I would have bought them all from gamestop so I could trade them in after but theres no way I was gonna walk in there with a stack of VN like “I’d like to trade these in please🧍‍♀️”Years of fanfics has also made me a speed reader who doesn’t really voice everything in my head properly so waiting to listen to each dialogue is kinda agonizing but I dont wanna turn it off cuz I paid for these so I’m gonna stick through it😅 As an artist I saw Lovers Pretend and I knew even if it was bad (which I don’t think it will be) I’m gonna love it anyways just from how pretty it looks.

I just finished VariBarri! and then went to look at this video because I was curious about your ranking. For shame, but I've yet to play every other game you have on this list -when I tell you my Switch backlog is unreal- . Seeing your opinions was pretty interesting! Hard agree on Shion, and seeing you appreciate Ichiya warms my heart (I couldn't really, because he's really well-written, and his route reminded me of irl people in a way that wasn't the most comfortable. Still, he deserves to be loved). Here are mine, but I'll rank based on _how I enjoyed them as characters_ as opposed to how enamored with them _I_ was as a player - sorry, I can't rank the way you do; a lot of my alltime faves are terrible husband material or don't give me the dokis at all. Rather, I find them fascinating more than anything else, and tend to feel _for_ them most of the time. Hope that makes sense. With that said *caution - some spoilers below* : Shion: A. You put it very nicely Nayuta: High B to A (probably A) (this is the big point of contention between both our lists - I 100% understand you not feeling the chemistry or his appeal, but in my head, and after the Extras/final WHIS convo... yeah, Hibari and him would totally be this absolutely wholesome couple with super weird kinks. ^^; They're in their own little world when they're together and I kind of live for this. Taiga: High C to B. He was my favourite in the Common Route and I honestly thought his chemistry with Hibari would be the best, but his route proper proved me wrong. Not that it wasn't well-written or didn't make sense, just... suffering. He's still a cool guy with a lot of good points, but there was a lot in their dynamic that left me questioning my own first impressions. Ichiya: C. See above. I'm sorry, Ichiya. Secret: Welp, I went through all stages of grief, I think. I'm on record saying I was certain this guy was a secret route and couldn't wait for all the tension and drama, but I wasn't expecting _that_ development for sure. I got my route, but at what cost? Maybe I oughta put that monkey's paw away. :D And since I'm curious, and if you feel like it: using your own rating system, how would you rank the Lover Pretend LIs? ^^ I'm also wondering what you've been playing lately, if anything! That's a really good ranking! I totally understand where you're coming from and you have very valid points, especially with the secret route 😆 If I had to rank the Lover Pretend LI's I think it would be: Kazuma - S (I really liked the chemistry with Chiyuki and him and he reminds me a lot of Mineo who is another S tier for me 😆) Riku - A (I had a lot of fun with his route and his CG's were beautiful!) Yukito - B (I liked his route and thought he had some good character development but he just wasn't my favourite out of the LI's) Harumi - B (Same feeling as Yukito, but I thought he and Chiyuki were adorable together!) Secret - C (I still like him but overall the other four had better routes. I did really like the plot twist at the end of his route though!) Honestly my Lover Pretend ranking is pretty boring but I genuinely love every character in that game. I had a lot of fun with every route and I thought each character had drastically different personalities that still appealed to me, which is very rare for me. 😂 I just recently finished Winter's Wish: Spirits of Edo so I'm currently taking a little break from otome. Right now I'm saving Hyrule in Tears of the Kingdom 😎 I've been looking forward to this game for soo long and it's been a blast playing it. And your answer could never be boring, dw :) I adore getting others' point of view on husbandos (especially if they are enthusiastic), that's half the fun of being an otome player, imho :D and I was pretty interested in yours, so! Solid ranking, in any case! I'm not a Riku fan myself but I genuinely love to read people who had fun with his route. I think his appeal is pretty niche, if that makes sense? (I say "niche" but his tropes are still well-loved ^^;). What I mean is that he's a very specific character type who fulfills very specific needs... and the people who love him generally know exactly what they're about. :D It's been fun reading people dissecting every aspect of his interactions with Chiyuki and gushing about them. And lol, it's my turn to react to your Secret Route inclusion, because I remember being _so_ uncomfy about this particular plot thread before it was resolved. :DDD If playing both those secret routes taught me anything, it's that I'm definitely not about *[spoilers]* . Wish the next one I come across won't include any, fingers crossed... o7 Definitely agree about his route being the worst one around - it felt a bit like an afterthought, rather than a proper one. I actually didn't like Mozu route that much, he felt the most boring. Limbo was the best for me, yeas pretty basic but I can play his story again and again. And I love his bad endings too Yang - was annoying pain in the ass. I read his route cause I wanted to finish the game. Same for Orlok, he is like a big baby then a man. I want a man, not a naive baby and I don't like him or felt anything for him.

Maybe you should have clarified that at the beginning of the video? Lol! Now I see why you narrowed the field down to Switch games lol. Now even though I haven't played any otome games yet, few of these I have watched certain routes (like Piofiore and Olympia Soiree) just because I didn't know if I could handle the 'heavy subject matter' if I bought and played those games. Having seen most of the Olympia routes, I think I laughed the most in the Doctor's route (I can't remember his name) near the ending of that route and that involved 2 chars there talking about the weather. It came out of left field and I lost it. I am sure you know which part I am talking about. I also loved the parts when Olympia gets saved by her leading man from that route. I am sucker for "man in shining armor" moments hehe. I noticed you put the only guys with Eye patches in S rank lol. Got a thing for that type of guy? Lol.

I can understand some people being put off by the age cap thing.. But I kinda just turn that part off in my brain cause as a 25yo now I'd feel weird playing the guys in their 20s routes. But they all look like anime boys so one can't really tell age and when it's told I ignore it. Like every Mc in most otome games is like not even an adult but I am so why would I care about the age cap of two fictional characters as long as it's not a important part of the story. I'd just be happy if age's of the characters where never told.. just say if a character is a little older or younger. No number needed!
